"they have indicated that they would like to operate in iowa city, they've indicated they don't plan to operate in iowa city under our current regulatory framework, those regulations have been in place for nearly a year, so we don't expect to see them operate here under our current regulations." the council could vote on making changes to the`ordinance as early as tuesday. traditional cab companies are not thrilled about this. tonight at six we'll have their reaction to these potential changes. in iowa city,

"right now our only option is to take someone to the emergency room or to jail and they really need to be getting treatment. " iowa city police chief sam hargadine says he's a big supporter of an idea to create a jail diversion type campus in johnson county... a sort-of one- stop place for officers to take people who are intoxicated, battling drug withdrawals, or having a "presently we could potentially take up to four hours while we're taking somebody through the emergency room, that's very expensive for the emergency room, very expensive for police and time consuming, they could be helping other people at the same time. kcrg-tv9's dave franzman is also in iowa city. dave, oaknoll has come up qith an interesting way to allow its residents to caucus. beth, for the first time ever in caucus history, if you are physically unable to come to a caucus...the caucus will come to you. four locations around the state will serve as tellite caucus sites and one of those is the oaknoll retirement residence in iowa city. many of the residents here have mobility issues and getting to a caucus site possible. but with a satellite location, party officials will come here to conduct a slightly shortened version of caucus business. several residents here applied to become a sasallite location and out of 170 democrats living here 125 signed up in advance to do their caucus business literally without leaving home. "i thought for the first time in my adult life i wouldn't have gone to a caucus i mighghas well have thrown in the towel...so when we found out they were entertaining applications i thought oh that's great, i'll do it. the city is encouraging people across iowa city to diversify the trees in their yards. the iowa city parks and forestry superintenden t also says it isn't necessary for people to cut down their ash trees immediately. he says it can take eight to 12 years for the insect to decimate the local ash tree population. the emerald ash borer is now in 30 iowa counties. that includes black hawk, dubuque, linn and bremer. the iowa department of natural resources has instituted a statewide quarantine. this means ash trees in any form cannot be transported across state lines. some parents in the iowa city school district say walking isn't possible for their kids after the district cut free busing for them for next school year. the district says the move will save nearly 400 thousand dollars. but today we looked into how far some of those walks would be for kids. this is how far dave schwartz lives from norman borlaug elementary. the district is cutting busing for two miles of nine elementary schools. but schwartz says he won't let his three kids walk to the school in the fall becaus

iowa city's recycling department is asking people for wine corks. last month officials launched a program to collect wooden corks at the east side recycling center. the city says it plans to send corks to a non-profit organization who finds new uses for cork. some of the group's products include thihis like footwear and yoga mats made of cork. the city says it's just another way to keep unnecessary items out of the landfill. "i think it helps people corks really are recyclable, and we can think about this small and can make a difference, another neat thing is it doesn't have to be limited to the city, restaurants can sign up and just have a bucket. an iowa city church working to stop construction of a new high-rise building in downtown iowa city is now letting the projeje move forward. last year, trinity episcopal church appealed a judge's decision to dismiss a lawsuit trying to stop construction of the chauncey tower. this week, the city council approved the settlement between the church and the tower's developers. yesterday, the church as part of that agreemt, the copany chauncey l-l-c will make donations to trinity episcopal's outreach prograra- the shelter house - over the next three years. the 15-story building will go up on the corner of gilbert and college streets in iowa city. plans call for the tower to house dozens of apartments, a hotel, offices, a movie theatre, and a bowling alley. a night of dancing for the kids has paid off. record-breakingunds stole the show for the univivsity of iowa's annuaua dance marathon.n. this year's marathon raised more than 2 point 4 million dollars. as part of what's called the big event, more than 25- hundred people spent 24 hours dancing on t tir feet friday into saturday. the money r

some central city parentntare petitioning for a re-audit of the school district's 2015 fiscal year. they allege that the district is breaking iowa code by hiding financial records from the public. central city schools need to cut about $550,000 from next year's budget to stay in the green. amber weber is a parent on a budget committee looking at where those cuts shshuld come from. she says she needs more information like monthly finance reports which the district isn't sharing. "i reached out to six area schools. the six area schools were able to provide me that information within, i think the quickest time was 27 minutes to an hour." superintendent tim cronin said because the district is so small, it doesn't have the staffingngize to make those reports readily available like others. he said officials are working to get parents that information as soon as possible. cronin said the school's online finance data is enough to meet iowa code. the dubuque school district has a re- engagement program to help dozens of high school drop outs earn their diplomas. the program is a partnership between dubuque schools, northeast t wa communi

the iowa city church that was trying to halt construction of a new high-rise building in downtown iowa city is letting the project move forward. last year, trinity episcopal church appealed a judge's decision to dismiss a lawsuit trying to stop construction of the chauncey building. this week, the city council approved the settlement between the church and the tower's developers. today, the church officially withdrew its appeal. as part of that agreement, the company chauncey l-l-c will make donations to trinity episcopal's outreach program - - over the next three years. the 15-story building will go up on the corner of gilbert and college streets in iowa city. plans call for the tower to house dozens of apartments, a hotel, offices, a movie theatre, and a bowling alley. the numbers are officially in, and the university of iowa's dance marathon broke another record tonight. this year's marathon raised more than 2 point 4 million dollars. as part of what's called the big event, more than 25- hundred people spent the last 24 hours dancing on their feet. they started at 7 last night, and

an iowa city woman is pushing for new legislation that would increase the punishment for peeping toms. the bill is scheduled for debate in the full senate. the bill passed committee this week when university of iowa police arrested 23-year-old robert hightower. they say he hall. ruth lapointe says in 2012, 66-year-old elwyn miller put holes in the ceiling and floor of her iowa city apartment to spy on her. police then found four similar peep holes in other apartments. paid a 6-thousand dollar fine and had to register as a sex offender. a peeping conviction requires the victim be partially nude and the suspect be aroused while spying on their victim. lapointe says proving that in court revictimized her and others in the apartment.
