with great minds i'll sit down with dr trita parsi founder and president of the national iranian american council talk about the united states a long and complicated relationship with iran. you need to know this today secretary of state john kerry met with his russian counterpart sergey lavrov in geneva switzerland for a second straight day of talks over a plan to hand syria's chemical weapons over to international authorities one of the major sticking points of the geneva talks is the secretary. kerry and the obama administration want to leave the possibility of a unilateral military strike on the table in case negotiations fall through russia insists that any american attack on syria would be a violation of international law and is demanding that the u.s. call off any attack plans in exchange for syria handing over its chemical weapons an american attack on syria without the authorization of the united nations security council would in fact be a violation of international law the u.n. only allows states to use force without the authorization of the security council when an armed attack occurs a

with me is a professor at rutgers university and president of the american iranian council. good to have you with us. >> thank you. >> what is your impression of rouhani's leadership style. >> he's an educated person. he believes what he says. what he believes is that the public has gone a bit too far neural daddism. he thinks both the left and the right have both been in the extreme side, and some how the country has to come to the center. >> he wants to be a different president than ahmadinejad. >> i think he wanted to be a different person from ahmadinejad. he believe both of them were at extremes, his supporters. he hopes to bring them to the center. in iran you have the revolution that is up there. and it has its own institutions including the revolutionary board and others. but at the level of the government, i think rouhani can do several things. i believe if he's supported he could deliver significant changes, both domestically and internationally. >> as you know the u.s. relations with iran has been very shaky. why this sudden about face, if you will, the call for d

he's the found ter of the american iranian council. it's good to see you. you were a presidential candidate if iran in 2013. you would have competed if your candidates had been accepted by the council but it was not, correct? >>> that's correct. >> and you also, night attended a dinner request president rohauni. what was the conversation about? >> it was basically on u.n. there were about 24 american officials and high ranking. others were most of them working out. but, the discussion was the nuclear issue unfortunately. and other issues that that engages u.s. and iran and travel for that. >>> president rahuni is unthe spotlight at the united nations this time and -- i mean, did you get a chance to talk to him and sort of get a feeling about his move? >> well, his move is -- you can see also in the media and that this man wants to try to break the ice to say and in this relationship but it has been involved in a major diplomatic and i will say also public relation effort to get closer to the public, to the american media, to the american administration. his
