tonight's program is a part of our bernard and irene schwartz distinguished speaks series and as always i'd like to think mr. swartz for his great generosity and leadership which has enables to us bring so many prominent speakers to the stage. i'd also just like to mention that our chairman emeritus, roger hertzog hoped to be here but his travel schedule conflicts with the programming. susan hertzog, who has as advised us is here and thank fer for all she has down on behalf of new york historical. [applause] >> so, tonight's program will last an hour and it will include a question and answer session. questions will be written on note cards. you should have received a note card as you entered the auditorium this evening. if you did not, my colleagues are still going up and down the aisles so you can get a note card from them. the note cards with your questions will be checked later on in the program. there will be a book signing this evening. it will take place right outside the main doors to the auditorium. in our something i gallery, and copies -- the smith gallery and the copy offered
