david r.: after irving, you went to drexel burnham?avid s.: when i was applying to business school, i got recruited to join the sales desk in the high-yield department at drexel burnham. i looked at the opportunity and said i will put off business school and try this drexel. certainly a very interesting firm. david r.: when you went out of business, were you worried about your career? david s.: i certainly was worried because i did not have an mba, but drexel was a good seminal experience. there were a lot of good things that drexel. there obviously were a lot of things that were not great, but as a young, ambitious associate in the high-yield bond department, i was given a lot of room to learn, to grow, learn about the high-yield bond market, and that is when i really got hooked. i really decided this is pretty interesting. when drexel went out of business, i was like, ok, i've got to find another job. i interviewed around, and within a year, i want up at bear stearns. at the end of 1990, i wound up at bear stearns. david r.: you left

you then went to irving.you ever found the person who turned you down, is he still sheer or is she still here? david s.: well, i don't know that there would be a person when i was first graduating from college. but goldman sachs was one of 40 or 50 firms that i sent a letter to asking for an interview. if i sent a letter to 50, it was one of the 45 that came back and said no thank you. so it would be hard to -- it would be hard to find one person. i also interviewed with goldman when i had been at irving trust for about a year for an analyst position. and i done well but ultimately was turned down in the last interview by a partner that would have been in 1985. kind of two rejections from goldman earlier in my career. david: you ever remind that person that he turned you down? david s.: that person is no longer around so can't be reminded. david: after irving, you went to drexel bernham? david s.: while i was applying to go to business school in 1985, early 1986, i got recruited to join sales desk in the high
