irwin redlener from the national center for disaster preparedness.ant to know what is the most concerning thing you've learned about this variant in the last 24 hours or so. >> hi, alex. one of the things of course is that this has moved very, very quickly. and i think that people are surprised, even though this is probably hovering around south africa for the last few weeks, it exploded on the scene just now. the reason we're concerned about it is this is definitely a different form of the virus. it's called a variant, which it is, of course. but it also is a variant of concern, which is the highest level of watchfulness that can be designated bit world health organization. but in addition to that, there's at least 40 mutations on this, on a particular protein in the virus. and the protein that we're concerned about is the one that makes it attach more easily to human cells. and potentially makes it spread more. and i think those are things we're obviously concerned about. but maybe the biggest thing that has investigators and officials worried is t

neil irwin captures it well.n they have been in many years. they also believe the economy is in terrible shape. the reasons seem to be tied to psychology of inflation and the ways people assess their economic well-being as well as the rising prices shortages have. it may be shaped by the psychological scars of the pandemic. one manifestation of this being an era of exhaustion, laura. there was an ap poll that said the economy was not doing well. we continue to get the good news about the economic recovery. inflation is a big part of that story. when you pay more for gas every week do you notice you're paying higher prices? >> yeah. >> both things can be true. the economy can be recovering but there's a worry that economic growth goes to the top 5% of families and that you need to still be making investments in your working class so that everyone benefits when the economy recovers. >> that's why the feeling of it may not be evenly distributed. >>> all of this and more ahead. president biden has momentum now and vi

that's the take in a new piece of "new york times" senior economic correspondent neil irwin. he joins me now. your piece really stuck with me because it got to kind of the psychology of people's economic reality, which i think is something not considered enough. but to your point, if things are better for most folks than they have been in many years, people still think it's terrible, why is that? >> so, when we think about our economic lives, there's two sides of it -- income and spending. there's the income you bring in from your wages, from your government benefits, things like that, and the money you spend. on the income side, things are looking really good. we've seen the strongest wage earnings the longest time plus the stimulus payments earlier in the year, child tax credit. so people are flush with cash. on the other side, supply constraints are real. meat, milk, everything is more expensive. your refrigerator breaks down, you have to wait months to get a new refrigerator. these supply chain issues are affecting the economic lives of american citizens. >> the lived exp
