i first got to know senator isakson when he was congressman isakson. we were both serving in the house of representatives. the house is a much larger body, and we really did not have an opportunity during those few years that we served together in the house to get to know each other in a personal manner. but when i was elected to the united states senate in january of 2007, it was senator isakson and dianne that reached out to myrna and me to welcome us to the senate family. it wasn't a onetime let's go to know each other and try to understand each other, we come from different backgrounds, we come from different states, we have different religions, but he and dianne, myrna and i really wanted to try to understand each other. you heard senator isakson talk about finding common ground. you can't find common ground if you don't know the other person you're talking with. and senator isakson has lived by example to develop that type of genuine friendship with his colleagues so that we can really understand what our priorities are and how we can find that c

and johnny isakson. i can remember hearing the story from then-minority leader of the house of representatives in the georgia state house, when you, senator isakson, would tell the story of leading such a small group that general custer had better odds than you had at that time. i'll never forget that. and you know, it taught me perseverance. it taught me to always work hard and to continue on. and i've always looked at that and admired that in you and i appreciate it very much. your dedication to hour state and our nation has truly been unmatched. it's something that i've admired throughout all my time in public service. senator isakson, you're one you are the only georgia to serve in the georgia state house and senate and house of representatives and united states senate. i got three out of four. i don't know if i will make it across over here, but if i do, i'm going to catch it, because i have had the honor as well. and at each of those levels that you served, you have been successful in pushing polic

isakson. he's devoted to getting results, not just for the people in georgia but for everybody in the united states. most importantly, he does it in a way that really is worthy of this august gust body. -- agust body. i know this body has had controversial the last 230 years. that's part of what makes us great is we have differing opinions but somehow in the last 230 years, we found a way to put those aside to find compromise. i made a living in business for 40 years finding ways to compromise with people who had differing views than i did. one example of johnny's statesmanship was with his long-time friend -- another great georgian, zell miller who happened to be a democrat. zell was a former governor of georgia and a united states senator. last year he sadly passed away. most people forget is that johnny actually early in his career ran for governor against the same zell miller who ended upenning -- up being, as johnny calls him, the best friend he ever had. when zell miller passed away, joh

and when johnny isakson -- senator johnny isakson came through orientation right after he'd been elected, i asked him if he knew governor zell miller. and he -- i thought they had a connection. sure enough they did because they'd run against each other in an earlier year. there's a saying that some of you have heard. that saying is just because somebody is your opponent doesn't have to be your enemy. i don't think i've ever heard anybody say such nice things, kind things, generous things about their opponent in an earlier election where he lost. and still miller won -- and zell miller won. proving your opponent does not have to be your enemy. for us around here in this day and age, that's a lesson we'd do well to take to heart. i want -- one of the other things i want to say is to share a story i was reminded of today by one of our staff members. my office is in the hart building and i've been in the same office for -- gosh -- 19 years now. my staff doesn't want to leave. they want to stay there. they like it. what makes them happy -- there's the old saying happy life, happy wife. well h

now, that is johnny isakson in one story. he starts out trying to do good for his neighbors and winds up literally changing the world. of course, madam president, changing the world can be grueling work. we all know johnny's health that is made his tireless service more and more challenging in recent months. as much as the other 99 of us hate to hear it, he's decided it's time to find new ways to serve that don't involve twice weekly air travel or winding trips through the capitol complex. but we know our friend is not riding off into the sunset or kicking up his heels. i know he's bound and determined to keep putting his expertise and institutional knowledge to work on behalf of georgians who need him. i have no doubt he'll keep on advocating for georgians with a pen and a phone, more friend across the country than anyone can count up, and maybe a few of his eight grandchildren by his side. sounds like a pretty enviable work arrangement and no doubt, johnny has earned it. he's earned the right to a little less light night vo

starts with ten as -- johnny isakson. starts with tenacity and a can-do spirit, propelled forward by charisma, smarts, and stubborn patience, and it ends with a win for georgians. and one celebrity cocktail while wrist deep in laundry detergent. but there is one other story that i think reflects this remarkable leader even more speferl. it starts with one name -- kate coosey. in 2009, johnny was reading his local paper and found an obituary for a woman who had been in africa with the peace corps. she was just 24. johnny didn't know kate, didn't know her family, but he felt called to tax and spend her funeral. he sat quietly in the very back and listened to her friends, her family, ministers, peace corps colleagues. unassumingly, he invited the family to stay in touch if there was anything he could ever do. only later did they relate what wasn't in the obituary. kate had been murdered in the dark of night after sounding the alarm on child abuse in her village in the african country of benin. johnny isakson was on the case

that is johnny isakson. that moment is built around joan johnny from the -- johnny isakson from the first time i had chance to meet him on january january 3, 2018. i knew all of those things being said about his bipartisanship, about his friendliness and how about how he wants for people and care about people was true. i could tell by the first handshake and the welcome to the senate, doug. i will say that i think meeting me and having that spark was a real test of senator isakson more than anybody in this body because you have to understand that when we first met it was about five days before his beloved georgia bulldogs were going to face the university of alabama in the national championship game. for those that don't know this, i'm telling you, you can think about partisanship and tribalism in a political term in washington, d.c., but if you ain't experienced football partisanship and football tribalism as far as f.c.c. thrives, you haven't experienced nothing. the fact that johnny isakson embraced me, a
