not too far away from iselle. here's the track. it will be working its way across the big island, then taking a position just to the south of maui and oh roy huh as we head through friday. all of these times, local hawaiian time. them by saturday it's well off to the west and no longer an issue. the winds will be strong, especially across the big i hand. this is where you have complex rain following up. then tropical storm winds in place like maui and across the southern end of oh roy huh and the wind field is going to work its way parter off to the south and seems to be bag issue. we have hurricane warnings up and that includes the big island. tropical storm warnings for the rest of the chain. there will be local heavy rainfall and flash flooding for the rest of the island. locally up to a foot of rainfall especially where there are taller mountains and that's going to lead to dangerous flooding. in terms of julio as we watch this over the next several days. likely to take a farther northern jog just north of the northern i lapsd.

right now iselle is hitting the big island and moves north to maui and oahu. the wind is heavy and creating problems including a power outage at a water treatment planned in maui and a storm surge causing flooding on the big island and massive waves along the coast. take a live look at waikiki beach in honolulu waiting for its share of the storm. the streets are quiet astome people got their supplies and they moved in to try to just stay safe. in the meantime, so many hotels and resorts in the area have been bracing for the storms knowing well in advance they were headed their way. bringing in food and supplies for the travelers that are there in the big island right now. they have had considerable warning for this tropical storm now headed their way. the streets are quiet and it's because the tropical storm has been downgraded, there could be flooding. let's check in with jennifer who leaves our coverage live in honolulu. >> it is just past 3:00 a.m. here in hawaii. although the hurricane has been downgraded to a tropical storm. it is still producing damaging

you can see hurricane iselle is now tropical storm iselle we never thought the winds would be the big deal but flooding and the dangerous sub. you have flash flood warnings continuing until 2:45 a.m. and they are three hours behind us. hurricane warning for the big island and the rest of the island tropical storm warning. the last 12 hours, moving in for the direct hit and following apart and julio increased to category three. friday night at 8:00 through overnight it will pull away from the island and julio will head to the north so the only worry is on the south side will be the wind and the waves that are rolling through because most of strongest wind and rain are in the northeast quadrant. >> it is supposed to be friday lite but it isn't. san jose shows congestion is light. we do not have heavy delays. northbound away from highway 17 it is heavy but to the south toward highway 85 we have an accident involving vehicles hitting the guardrail and a lane is blocked. we have an over turned vehicle in redwood city southbound 101 at 9 off-ramp but not causing any delays. no injuries are

iselle does not look big.om in on it and you take the big island that is a big hurricane. it is moving west at 13 miles an hour this looks to be the track right now. it is coming in late tonight and some low clouds are starting to advance on it and the track of the iselle looks to be going over the big island. but it is expected to go south. and there are hurricane warnings out for the big guy lands and a tropical storm watch for here. and that i warning means it is happening. this is the track for right now. i think a really heavy rain is the big story out of there. and there will somebody flood issues, no doubt about it and the tropical clouds have finally moved out. they were here for the longest time and a pattern stuck for the longest time and hints of it early next week. and the one low moved out and that takes out the tropical clouds. clouds, warm, humid. and that has cleared the pick. and another low drops in from the north this time so a little different pattern as we head into the weekend. today 50s

iselle, the effects felt on the island. notice in the difference, how well defined the eye is, the category three hurricane is right behind it. let's talk about iselle. we are going expect land fall in three hours. the center of circulation is offshore. we are waiting for that to make its way on shore within the next several hours. that's when we will feel the biggest effect. tropical storm warnings in effect for islands behind the big island. the threshold, 75-mile-per-hour winds. it's really breaking apart. 74 miles an hour is all it takes to be a category one hurricane. the effects are going to be felt similar. what are we looking at as it makes its way through the island. the afternoon will be quiet. by tomorrow, the first system makes its way offshore. look what we are expecting. up to a foot of rain possible, not only on the big island, but maui. you have huge waves out there. over 20 feet is the concern of storm surge as well. the biggest concern is the mountainous region, the heavy rain in the mountains. one day to

in fact, another look here at the tropical satellite, iselle, specifically.as you mention it hasn't quite made landfall yet, but bringing ie impact to the big island. >> this would be the first time since 1993, hurricane fernandez, that a hurricane warning was issued for the hawaiian island at all, let alone a landfall. very rare event for hawaii to get hit by a hurricane or tropical storm system. why is that? because you have a lot of very stable air in this part of the pacific. so, so often, storms like this would just start to peter out. but we are in the middle of a he will nenna, in other words, warmer, warmer water temperatures in the central pacific or the pacific basin in general. that means with warmer water, in part, will help fuel tropical systems. that is certainly what's happening here. eventually once this does pass by, which will happen later on today, it starts to weaken, it starts to gain a little bit of forward speed, and unfortunately it is not going to weaken in time for it to passover the islands here. currently julio also a hurricane and

iselle is making landfall in hawaii.the radar leer and it looks like it's moving more to the northwest right now north of -- hilo. now it could be raining more to the west side of the islands you got to remember it is up here. it's a 14,000-foot tall volcano. so this is interrupting the circulation that's why iselle is weakening. so it's also got some upper level wind sheer that's warning in effect for the northern and northeastern section of the big island of hawaii. you get heavier rain and also heavier flooding and potential with rock and mudslides too. so this certainly has to be watched. and just to give you the perspective on the rest of the island chain, as this is forecast to move off for the west. again i think it looks like to the jogging to the northwest and hopefully it stays south because if it stays south then most of the rest of the island chain doesn't get the winds that the big island's going to get and they don't get the rain either. but the storm forecast to weaken to 60 miles an hour by 8:00 friday mo

as of earlier this morning iselle downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm but iselle business to make land fall. she carries wind of 07 miles an hour. hurricane julio not far behind. that is in the the pacific but expect to pass just north of the island zoo time on sunday. >> yes. >> so caitlin, good news is in the last hour this has been downgraded at least iselle has been downgraded to a tropical storm. >> that is good news. it doesn't make a difference for anybody there. they are seeing hurricane to tropical storm force winds and heavy rain and they could have a foot of rain, in hilo or at least around hilo before iselle moves out. the here's radar first. you can see that tropical storm churning approaching the big island. it has not the officially made land fall. it is stopped in its track as it encountered all of this terrain. the friction on of the storm hitting the mountains. it will slow it down. it is still bringing in a ton of rain and wind to the big island which will get a direct impact. tropical storm iselle, the wind are weakening. they were 07 miles an hour. the

and that was always the worry here with iselle. as a result of the topography there in the big island with those very high peaks. 369 millimeters of rainfall, over a foot. take a look at what's happened here as far as the damage. flooding obviously and then the trees weakened by all that rain, and then you've got the tropical stormforce wind gusts that came along because this was indeed a tropical storm, and then we had that damage. it did not make landfall as a hurricane. had that happened, it would have been the first time because we've never actually had a hurricane make landfall on the big island. we've had a couple further north and west. but not through hilo. so that record remains. no activity there. here's julio behind me. you'll be able to see him spinning here with 160-kilometer per-hour winds still holding its own. but at this point not worried about julio making direct impact with the islands. it's going to go north of the chain. that is maybe enhancing the rainfall down to the south but that would be about it. then we
