as a shield and then when in between jamestown island and prudence island and landed here. that was late at night on july 10. the most significant risk they faced was being spotted by sailors and guard boats in the bay. the warships sent out guard boats to give warning of american ships trying to enter or leave the bay. they were not expecting raiding ships. if there had been a single musket fired they all probably , would have been taken prisoner and put aboard prison ships in newport harbor. there was a humanitarian disaster on board the prison ships in newport and dozens died. barton and his men avoided being caught. they succeeded. it was an incredible feat stealing a general in the midst , of a british army without a shot being fired. the americans were thrilled. washington gushed it was among the finest partisan exports that has taken place during the war on either side. the continental congress was so pleased it made barton a colonel in the continental army and ordered an elegant sword be awarded to him. this is now held by the rhode island historical society. here i

we're on an island. >> reporter: across the islands, ports are closing. and in the air, the coast guard watching for water hazards. at the emergency operations center on the big island, preparations for a direct hit. mayor billy kanoi is nervous, warning residents and vacationers to take the threat seriously. >> you're dealing with high winds, lots of rain, lots of water, high surf. and on an island community, you put all of those elements together, and you've got increased unpredictable. >> reporter: and it couldn't have come at a worse time. it's peak vacation season here. last summer, more than 75,000 people visited the island and spent more than $1.2 billion. hotel owners are doing what they can to take care of guests. >> we brought in food and water, enough to keep the resort replenished for at least a week. >> reporter: the last time a hurricane hit the islands was more than two decades ago and caused more than $1 billion in damage. some airlines are canceling flights ahead of the storms. shelves once packed with essentials now empty. long lines at

now, the impact varying quite a bit from island to island. the big impact on the big island, 8 to 14 inches of rain in the mountain areas and the eastern half of the island, wind gusts up to 75 miles per hour. but for maui, wind gusts may be up to 50, 2 to 4 inches of rain, and looking at 45-mile-per-hour winds at the airport. airport operations may not be impacted, but in maui, hilo, and kona airports being affected by this storm. round two, potentially, would be hurricane julio, which is going to track, we think, to the north of the hawaiian islands. we hope this trend continues. that's some good news, if it does curve off to the north as we get to the start of the weekend. i'll be watching this very closely and have an update on the changes in our own weather, warmer changes, coming up in a few minutes. back to you. >> certainly stay with us. we'll continue to cover the story. when we're off the air, you can check our website, facebook, twitter, all kinds of things for updates around the clock. >>> okay, lawyers for suspended state senator

widespread winds for the hawaiian island chain.the southern half of the big island and 10 to 20 inches possible. that will take its time by friday. probably late this afternoon and start to slow away from the big island and will spend at least twice as long crossing the big island and dropping a tremendous amount of rain. hurricane julio, but we think that will track a little bit further to the north curving away. good news other than large surf. pick ups in wind speed and up towards kauai. julio moves off to the north. we have low clouds and misty skies in parts of the bay area. you can see around 101 at willow, we have a few low clouds and patchy clouds around the peninsula. the story as it goes through the weekend will be saturday. a good nice sea breeze upon droing down a couple of degrees. an area forming offshore that will begin to pull moisture out of the south that could trigger monsoon showers even for the bay area possibly by monday. factor that into the weekend plans. stay tuned with the forecast late sunday into monday

bigad shaban is on the big island with an update.g. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning to you. hurricane is elle is continuing to bring these strong winds of 85 miles per hour. we're continuing see this band of rain and forecasters believe we may not have seen the worst just yet. as we mentioned, thousands of people are without power and several hundred people spent the night at emergency shelters with the storm continuing on its path across the big island. now all this is happening while a second hurricane hue joe is turning not far behind. that storm was actually rtl graded to a category 3 hurricane with winds up to 115 miles per how. and, anne-marie, while it's expected to go just north of the hawaiian islands, it's still likely to dump plenty of rain on the region by sunday. >> bigad, i'm curious about conditions right now. it doesn't look like the rain was falling as hard as it us when we spoke to you not too long ago. >> reporter: yeah. it's been somewhat sporadic. right now we've been in a lull for the past hour or so. we'v

he recently escaped from the island. he had news about major general richard prescott who had recently assumed command of british troops on the island. this was the same prescott who earlier abused ethan allen. reported general prescott was ending nights at the house of a man on the island. now he was spending nights at an isolated farmhouse about five miles north of newport. barton had an idea. he would form a small party of soldiers with expense using boats. on a dark night, they would take the boats across narragansett bay avoiding the british warships. they would land unnoticed on the shores of the island, sneak up and surround the house. they would storm the house, capture general prescott and taking back the mainland. he could then be exchanged for general lee. here is a picture of general prescott. figure in rhode island. he was the classic petty tyrant. when he interviewed a captain that had been captured, he reportedly knocked him in the head and threatened to hang him. he would regulate threaten the captive wit

islands since 1950. right now iselle is going towards honolulu with wind gusts up to 36 miles an hour as a tropical storm. here's what it looks like on the infrared satellite imagery. it's blowing over the big island. as it does so the winds are gusting to 80 miles an hour. there are some power outages and we anticipate a foot of rain there. hurricane julio is on its heels. 50s and 60s here today. numbers similar to yesterday. that seven-day forecast is still straight ahead. but first things first, out on the roads, elizabeth? >> okay, thank you, roberta. let's check the bay area roads including tracy in the altamont pass. so far, so good as you get closer to the dublin interchange you can see it's a little crowded out there all those headlights that's the commute direction and continues to look good heading to the castro valley y. counter- commute we have a stalled big rig. tow crews have been called out. so hopefully this will be cleared from lanes shortly. i'm not seeing a delay but it's eastbound 580

the center is 216 miles from the big island of hawaii. we're tracking, too, and this is a wider perspective in the satellite loop. with winds of 80 miles an hour, a category 1 and the stronger one with strengthening hurricane julio, packing winds of 105 miles an hour. here's the forecast track. we don't do this too much, but we have dual forecast tracks for the hurricanes and you will notice that julio will weaken into a tropical storm and move to the north of the islands. the main concern in the short- term, hurricane iselle will be making landfall, most likely, as a category 1 hurricane for the big island of hawaii and moving out as you can see that eventual track to the southern periphery of the islands of oahu and kuai. we have to talk about the hurricane warning in place for the island of hawaii. the rest of the island chain, we're talking about a tropical storm warning and that could be changing if the track moves a little bit. the rainfall expectations on the order of five to eight inches with isolated amounts approaching 12 inches

iselle off to the west of the big island. where it's located now, it's providing the most widespread impact past oahu and maui. those gusts approaching 50. the track for the rest of the afternoon will take the storm away from the islands, giving the wind and rain a bit of a break as we head into tonight. there is a stronger hurricane out there to the east. hurricane julio, category 2. but notice the path here. doesn't look like at this point it's going to hit the hawaiian islands. it will come close, but move to the north by the time we get into sunday as a tropical storm. that bears some watching as these tropical forecasts are known to shift from time to time. here's a view from the lich observator observatory. you see haze and hazy skies currently in san francisco, where you can see sunshine there. and it has cruise ships have come in from alaska. nice day out there at the embarcadero, 67 in san francisco, and a closer look at the fog still right around the golden gate bridge, and some clearing taking shape around santa cr

two storms approaching the big island. iselle, hurricane category one hurricane is just about ready to make landfall within the next couple of hours. let me give you some statistics of the two storms. hurricane julio is a powerful category three, but that's far off right now. we're looking at iselle which has a center only about 95 miles east/southeast of hilo, maximum sustained winds 75 miles per hour. probably will be a category one hurricane. it will pass over the i'll aslad move quickly over the chain of islands over the next couple of days and then tropical storm julio moving north of the island. it may be far enough away that it won't deal much of a blow at all to the islands, but once again, expecting landfall from iselle within the next couple of hours. that would be around, oh, 8:00 p.m. hawaii aleutian standard time. tropical storm warnings in effect for the remainder of the chain of hawaiian islands. we'll keep track of it on through the forecast. >>> let me show you a live picture of turtle bay, on the western

live in these islands of hawaii have not taken precautions. they've been preparing for days for this. there were two-hour waits in the line to buy water. long lines at gas stations. other food stops and supplies selling out quickly. mostly on the big island. there have been problems and there will be problems. there's been some flooding in low-lying areas already, and the winds up to 50, 60, 70 miles per hour have already knocked down enough power lines to cause problems here on maui, for example. the only water treatment plant is now out of commission because the power lines are down. not knowing when it will be back on-line. consumers and customers have been urged to conserve water from this point forward. of course, the big concern is what happens with hurricane julio? it still is a hurricane packing winds sustained gusting higher than that, but it looks like it might be tracking to the north of the islands as well, so it looks like no real direct hit from either of these two major systems, and as i said, the anchorman had the words for it.

it's hitting big island of hawaii as a tropical storm. it's expected to send rain and high winds across the entire state. hurricane julio is also on its way with even stronger winds. so let's get a look at weather and roberta has been following that. good morning, ro. >> hurricane iselle now downgraded to a tropical storm because this is typical once a hurricane makes landfall it loses energy. it needs to be open warm waters to gather momentum. but it is now making landfall at this exact moment. the winds are 60, the gusts 85. we have even seen stronger gusts. we are still anticipating about a foot of rain from this particular tropical storm. there are reports of outages downed trees, as well. we are forecasting this particular tropical storm to move out over the open waters. it will become a category 1 hurricane again but it will be out there over nowhere. so then we start to focus our energy on this right here. this is julio. right now a category 3 hurrican 115-mile-per-hour winds. right now the forecasted path is supposed to take it no

working to the northeast you see this island is still known as the delong islands. they are working through the larger islands to the open water and they finally do reach. they put the rickety boats in the water and they have to almost rebuild them because they have been destroyed from the trek over the ice. everything is going well until the next day they encounter a i veal. the story becomes the different fate of these three boats making their way toward siberia not knowing if the other parties are alive or dead. this shows the way they make their way towards this amazing place called the lane delta. it is the delta of one of the world's largest river. it empties into the arctic ocean and melts at the delta and creates a barrier to its own currant and the water is going crazy trying to find a way to the sea and exaggerates the normal pattern you would get. you have hundreds of islands and back channels and oxbo lakes. and this is the train that deland and his men reached and they are trying to save themselves and find each other in the labyrinth. it makes for a di
