military protest today on the japanese island of okinawa. adrianna diaz is there. >> reporter: tens of thousands came out to protest the u.s. military in okinawa. three quarters of american bases in japan are located on this very small island. and many oak gnaw wants say the base has been troubled. in may kenneth shinzato an e-marine who worked on the base was arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a 20 year old okinawa woman. also this year a sailor pled guilty to rape and another sailor was arrested for drunk driving after injurek two people. okinawaan told us they are not anti-american, they just want the u.s. military which has been on this island since the end of world war ii gone or dramically downsized. >> u.s. military officials tell us they too are outraged by the recent crimes after the death of the 20 year old, they instituted a 30 day mourning period, banning drinking off base and imposing a midnight curfew. and while thousands of marines are in the process of being relocated off of the island, reena, this say hard lo

m military on the japanese island of okinawa. and we're on patrol with piper, the airport wonder dog. captioning sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs weekend news." >> ninan: good evening, i'm reena ninan with a western edition of the broadcast. summer officially begins monday with a dangerous heatwave baking the southwest. temperatures are expected to top 120 degrees in some places. 116 in phoenix, arizona, where excessive heat killed 84 people last year. health officials are warning people to stay hydrated and if possible indoors. extreme heat is adding to the struggle to contain several major wildfires in the west. near santa barbara, california, a wildfire continues to threaten about 270 homes. fire officials are hoping the winds don't get stronger overnight. in central new mexico a huge fire has destroyed at least two dozen homes. the national guard has been called in to prevent looting in evacuated neighborhoods. meteorologist pamela gardner from our boston station wbz has more on the extreme heat. ord ecord heat will continue

on the island that they love. but right now, there's despair. we have thousands of people leaving puerto rico every month to come to the mainland because there's no opportunity. . this is what debt does to economies. it absolutely crushes them. and it crushes people. so what do we do? we were we have a two-pronged approach. number one, the elected officials in puerto rico have known this issue has been coming for years. and haven't been able to get their hands around it. haven't had the political will to fix the problem. and so we are going to put in to effect an oversight board, to actually work with the island government, to get its finances and its budgets under control. and that oversight board is going to have an opportunity to work on the debt restructuring, which is the second prong of this bill. $73 billion in debt. they can't pay it. people might want to wish that all the bond holders could be paid, they might dream about all the bond holders being paid, but the bottom line is, puerto rico doesn't have enough income to pay its bond hold
