it's called block island. and it's about 12 miles off the coast of rhode island.way that people get to block island is by ferryboat. and the ferry takes off from a spot on the mainland called point judith. excuse me. this time of year, during the week, the final ferry leaves point judith for block island at 4:45 p.m., sharp. on the dot. it is known to be a very punk chul ferry. according to the block island times, during the rhode island primary on tuesday afternoon, election officials on block island noticed that they were running low on democratic ballots. they had reserved 300 ballots for people to vote in the democratic primary, but they were flying through those ballots at a much greater clip than they expected, block island was going to run out of democratic ballots. by the time they realized it, it was after 4:00 in the afternoon and the ferry schedule became a problem, right? the only chance to get more ballots out to block island was to somehow get more sent over from the mainland on that one last ferry of the day. the one scheduled to leave right on time

you're talking about a small island.have really been have been inundated by refugees. what do locals tell you about the impact on their lives and what are their attitude towards it? >> reporter: it's interesting. you expect an island that relies entirely on tourism to be a lot more hostile toward these migrants and refugees because it's essentially destroyed the summer tourism season. the hotels are full but they're full with ngo workers, visiting officials. as far as other parts of the island that don't see the direct impact of refugees and rely almost entirely on tourism money, they're going to have a very tough year. despite that, they've actually told us, look, we get it. we are decedents in many cases of orthodox refugees from the ottoman era, so we understand. we in our living family memory have heard stories of how tough it can be and we're still willing to extend our welcome to them. so, you have, as one would expect, haven't seen much hostility toward them, michael. >> great reporting. thanks so much. i want to

the second thing i will say about ellis island is that although ellis island is really a symbol of the immigration story in the united states, it's actually part of a much larger set of institutions and structures put in place across the americas, across the atlantic world to deal with the new phenomenon of mass free migration in the 19th and early 20th centuries. we often think of the united states as a nation of immigrants . we hear that over and over and it's partially true. i think it's worth remembering forced him all that before the united states was a nation of immigrants, it was in part a nation of slaves and slave owners, something we're wrestling with right now here at georgetown university with the renaming over the weekend of two buildings on campus named after leaders of georgetown involved in selling slaves to louisiana. that nation of immigrant stories should not obscure other aspects of our history that i think are equally significant and don't fold very well into that story. secondly, that the u.s. is not uniquely a nation of immigrants. many other countries in the ame
