and still really not much coming from the israeli army or the israeli government. know why they're taking so long to respond? >> we heard just a few minutes ago from the israeli army, they say that mortar shells were fired at israeli troops from the vicinity of the school, and the israeli troops returned fire. and they say the incident is still under investigation. so that brief comment so far that we had from the israeli army we do expect to -- an israeli army spokesperson to be issuing a longer statement soon. >> indeed. it is very brief and very vague, isn't it? i just want to -- when other schools have been hit or other areas, they have responded much faster, haven't they? >> it depends. sometimes they respond more quickly than others. and certainly, though, i think that these -- there has been several incidents recently and the israeli army has tended in other incidents to blame hamas. but as you see, we will wait to find out exactly had they say with this one. >> and, bethany, a poll of some 600 israeli jews found that 97% still supported the current military

the israelis have begun a ground invasion of gaza.ed and focused and targeted on tunnels which they say the terrorists have used to invade israel. john huddy, what are you seeing? >> reporter: we're seeing more artillery fire. we're seeing what appears to be either flares or incoming fire coming in -- there was an explosion -- coming into gaza. to the north and also to the northeast. the eastern part of gaza, where the israeli troops have been amassed, going close to the 11th day here on the ground in gaza, and that's where the ground forces -- i'm seeing the sky lying up. there's a flare coming right very close to us, just offcamera. you can see the sky is lit up. stand by. i want to see -- boy, this is right up the road, right up the street from our location. a flare coming down, which signals to me that -- that is an indication that ground troops will be -- artillery will be tarring that area, and that's a little disconcerting. that's clear close. here's more incoming fire from northern gaza, coming into -- hold on. just bear with

it's very close to -- >> so they wanted to go and attack, kill israelis but also kidnap israelis. >> yes. >> that was one of the rationales that israelis have suggested was one of the purposes of these tunnels? >> yes. >> we'll have a lot more, this conversation, other details, when i spent a few hours down there in the south along the border with gaza earlier today. this tunnel, the lieutenant colonel says, about 1.5 kilometers under gaza. another 1.3 kilometers under israel. they actually found this tunnel before this current operation, a couple weeks before. they sealed off the part going from gaza and sealed off the other part as well. but it's very, very close quarters, but very sophisticated. when you walk through the tunnel, you actually -- you feel pretty secure down there because it's cool, it's not hot, very hot outside, but it's much cooler down there when you're about 45 feet orb 15 meters below the surface of the earth. we're going to have a lot more on this tour that the idf, the israel defense force, provided me later, coming up later in "the situation room" as well. l

you mentioned more than 50 dead in the ranks of the israeli army. however, at this point this does not seem to have any kind of a negative effect in terms of how the israeli public perceives this operation and the need to move forward. the message which was being delivered by the israeli prime minister this evening was very clear, and it was addressed mostly to the international community, which has been making very loud calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire. the message from israeli authorities this evening is not now for this ceasefire. >> what about on the ground in israel itself today? any developments or anything you would like to bring us up to speed with? >> yes, definitely, two major security incidents which occurred just moments before the israeli prime minister stepped up to the podium. some of those incidents mentioned this that report which you just aired, two symbolic one. he first one, a mortar shell landing and killing four israelis and wounded others. that mortar shell was not intercepted by the iron dome system, which is mea

even the israeli government has made this point, because there are veterans who the israeli governmentt recognize as deserving. they do not protect them. these are nomadic arab peoples. the israeli government argued against providing them with all of, simply because the people have to do, according to the israeli government, is lie down on the ground if they know that an artillery rocket might be coming in, and if they know that, -- do that, their chances of being a casualty will be reduced by 80%. that is the israeli government itself saying that. civile reason that this defense is so effective is first the artillery rocket warheads to 20ot very large, 10 pounds, and the second thing is people have adequate warning to take shelter. that is extremely effective. let me give you an example of how dramatically effective early warning can be. in world war ii, during the bombing of london, there were v1 v2 rockets being used. v2 rockets hit without warning. cruise missile. it was called a buzz bomb because it had a pulse jet motor that made a buzzing sound. v1's did the same amount of damag

you read the israeli media. the israeli press you see some of the stuff written about the secretary of state john kerry which is pretty awful right now. what's going on? >> unlike most of our neighbors, the degree government does not control our press. you have to ask journalists why they write there. >> they're getting this from israeli officials. >> they're not getting it from us. we and the united states have a common goal here. we want to come out of this in a way we don't have the to revisit the conflict in another six months. we want to come out of this with a sustained period of peace and quiet. to get that, we have to start dealing with an issue that hasn't been on the front burner and that's demiller rising. once this is over and most of hamas's rockets have been destroyed and the tunnels have been destroyed, how do we prevent hamas from building its terrorist military machine? is that can only be done through international cooperation. we have to bring about a demilitarized gaza strip. >> how far apart
