there's been violent protests in the may day area of istanbul.ater cannons and tear gas as hundreds defied a ban on protests in the taksim square. the area is very much a traditional rallying point for trades unions. last year it was the focus of a long running occupation there. protestors also threw stones and fireworks at the police. just a short while ago i spoke to bbc's selin in istanbul. >> i'm in the district 15 minutes from tam similar square. there's been heavy intervention where i am. hundreds of people were throwing stones at police from time to time. heavy police intervention was the use of tear gas and water cannons. 20 minutes or so ago, people dispersed from where we are. they just tried to find shelter in houses, or some businesses, or wherever they could find actually to avoid getting into custody. now streets are quiet. i'm sure we can't say the same thing in different parts ofs tan buch -- parts of istanbul. >> a lot of this is because they went to taksim square isn't it? >> reporter: yes, that's correct. unions and protestors

nbc's richard engel has more now from istanbul. >> reporter: turkey has a terrible record of mine safety. still, officials in this country say this is likely the worst mining accident in turkey's street. the government has declared three days of national mourning. a massive rescue operation is underway this morning at a coal mine in soma, turkey, about 150 miles south of istanbul after an explosion triggered a fire, which trapped hundreds of workers more than a mile underground. officials say the explosion may have been caused by a faulty electrical transformer. the blast happened during a shift change, so there is some uncertainty over the exact number of workers still inside. the crowds gathered outside the mine, while rescue teams pumped oxygen inside. those lucky enough to get out alive had inhaled smoke and coal dust. the turkish prime minister said that some of the miners had been pulled out. as for others, she said, the rescue continues. for families and friends at the local hospital, fear and frustration grow as they wait for answers. my elder brother is inside the hospital, said

andrew finkel has more from istanbul. how is the rescue effort going right now?still very intense. i think rescuers are beginning to lose hope for what may be hundreds more miners trapped under the earth. it's now some 20 hours since this fire broke out. it broke out with a piece of faulty electrical equipment, trapping miners deep in this mine in the west of turkey. a wall of smoke and flames they couldn't get through to get to the surface. it's proving difficult for the rescuers to get to these people. they are pumping oxygen into the shaft, but, i'm afraid they are beginning to be a lack of hope for what may prove to be one of the worst mining disasters. >> possibly one of the world east worst mining disasters. the lack of oxygen. tell me about the rescue right now. we are watching this video, these pictures of rescuers pulling people out on stretchers. are they still pulling people out? are they still pulling miners out at this hour? >> reporter: well the last people to be rescued alive, that i know about was several hours ago when five people were taken from
