holly williams is in istanbul tonight. holly? >> reporter: scott, there is no european no-fly list that would have prevented hayat boumediene traveling from paris via madrid and on to istanbul. if the french police had been looking for boumediene, that would have been flagged to the spanish, but they weren't when she left france before the attacks took place. surveillance cameras captured hayat boumediene entering turkey through an istanbul airport on the second of january, a week before her partner, amedy coulabli, killed four hostages in a kosher grocery store in paris. the turkish authorities said today that they were not warned about boumediene by the french government, so they stamped her passport and let her into the country, and she wasn't alone. in the surveillance video, you can see a man, who turkish officials named today as 23- year-old mahdi sabri belhoucine, another french citizen. photographs of hayat boumediene show her transformation from the daughter of a french delivery driver to an armed islamic extremist. turk

a turkish police officer has been killed and another one wounded in a suicide bomb attack at an istanbulice station. >> turkish authorities say a woman entered the station speaking english and reported a missing wallet before blowing herself up. the bombing took place in the city's central district, popular with tourists. there was no immediate claim of responsibility for tuesday's attack although a leftist terrorist group has claimed an attack on a single police -- ist anbul police last week. our correspondent, dorian jones -- can you give us more details? >> what we understand, although the information is still sketchy, a woman believed to be in her 20's wearing a black hij ab approached the tourism center in the istanbul maine tourism area claiming in broken english that she left her wallet inside the police station. we understand the police station guarding the entrance became suspicious and in the subsequent melee the woman detonated the explosives she was wearing, injuring police officers. one officer subsequently died of his injuries in the police station. this could have been far

we want to begin with nbc's richard engel in istanbul. richard, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. the last year isis has been dominating headlines overshadowing al qaeda. something about dangerous rivalry is emerging, a game of one-upsmanship between the two groups. with the paris attacks, al qaeda is launching a comeback. the attack on "charlie hebdo" last week was al qaeda's most high-profile operation in years and today they bragged about it. in a video al qaeda in yemen claimed it targeted the magazine for insulting the prophet muhammad even laying out the chain of command behind the attack. ordered by alzwarhi, osama bin laden's successor. planned and financed by american-born cleric anwar al awlaki before he was killed in a u.s. drone strike in 2011 and carried out by cherif and said kouachi. reports suggest the brothers got their automatic weapons from this man, amedy coulibaly who purchased them from a belgian arms dealer and has now turned himself in to the police. coulibaly also bought the two machine guns he used

on that day, she went from spain to istanbul. after two days in istanbul, she is thought to have left and gone to a southeastern city in turkey. the city is pretty well gone, and it's a good way to get in wurfa is right at the border. they followed her phone signals from istanbul to that border city until last thursday, until a day after the attack on the charly hebdo offices in paris. officials believe she then crossed into syria that day. into syria, that day she is believed to have crossed into syria, the day after the charlie hebdo attacks, and the day after her common law husband killed a policewoman and then attacked a market in paris, killing four hostages before he was killed in a shootout. they are all dead now, all killed by police, but she is still at large. bbc reports today that officials placed her last known phone call as coming this saturday from an isis controlled town inside syria not far from the turkish border. french police say that as many as six people overall are still at large, including one man being see

turkey's foreign minister said today after arriving in istanbul before the terror attacks in paris, boumeddiene crossed into syria last thursday. again, this is video coming in just a short time ago of her at the airport. also today, france defense minister announced that 10,000 troops are being mobilized to protect sensitive sites in response to the nation's worst terror attack in a half century. they're searching for possible accomplices and worry about copy cats. this morning, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu visited the kosher super market in paris, placed flowers in tribute to four jewish victims killed there. the four victims are being flown to israel for burial and prime minister netanyahu is expected to eulogize them at a funeral tomorrow. the prime minister was also aamong the 40 plus world leaders who attended yesterday's massive unity march in paris, which is being called the largest demonstration in french history. nbc's ron allen joins us live from paris. ron, let's first talk about the sensitive sites the troops will be deployed to protect. what more do we know about thes

meanwhile, there is a new surveillance footage out of turkey from the istanbul airport dated january 2nd. five days before the "charlie hebdo" attacks. it shows 26-year-old fugitive hayat boumeddiene, the girlfriend of the kosher market attacker passing through the airport with a man at the time. authorities unknown without information from the french they flagged her for surveillance and tracked her all the way to the turkish syrian border. it is believed she passed through the border last week. her whereabouts are unknown now. speculation she may be with isis. if that is the case it is difficult to bring her to justice. there are concerns about her potential propaganda value as well. the focus here in france very much on determining any connections these perpetrators may have to larger terror networks. we know the kouachi brothers, one of the kouachi brothers trained with an al qaeda affiliate in 2011 in yemen. we saw the video from the grave of amedy coulibaly, the kosher market attacker pledging allegiance to isis. the issue is getting to the bottom of the affiliations. john. >>

i'm joined right now by the great richard engel in istanbul. richard, thank you so much for this.give us a picture of what's happening in europe. >> reporter: well, i think the european security officials are realizing that they are overwhelmed. europoll said that 5,000 europeans have traveled to syria or iraq to fight with groups there with hundreds at least, returning. that is the population that they know about. they don't really know how many supporters they have how many people in european cities and not just the capitals but small european cities are prepared to do copycat attacks or launch attacks. this is a major problem. it has been a problem that is not new. it has been a problem that people have recognized for a long time, but that paris was suddenly a wake-up call. and i really think that the more they are scrambling to make arrests, and the more they talk about cooperation, the more it shows that they really are behind the situation on this one. >> when they -- it seems to me i'm just going by human nature, tell me if it makes sense. if you go over there to fight in a

that same day, hayat boumeddiene flew to istanbul with another man, seen in this airport video. french media reports investigators found a stash of weapons, explosives and two isis flags when they raided coulibaly's suspected hideout over the weekend. authorities also found keys to a motorbike. that helped them identify a suspected accomplice who was believed to have driven coulibaly to the market where he later shot and killed four people. officials also following the money trail. a french newspaper reports coulibaly got a loan for $7,000 from a bank in northern france in december. the bank told the paper he provided the documents needed, including a valid i.d. card. >> the question is what were the other sources of funds that this individual had. was somebody providing funds to be able to sustain him month to month? >> reporter: coulibaly was friends of cherif and said kouachi, the gunmen in the "charlie hebdo" shooting. u.s. officials have told cnn the brothers may have received up to $20,000 from al qaeda in the arabian peninsula to fund their attack. the raid against the op

meanwhile, new footage dated january 2nd from istanbul turkey. airport showing the 26-year-old fugitive and girlfriend of the kosher supermarket attacker hayat boumeddiene passing through the airport with a male companion. turkish authorities spotted her and they were not tipped off at that point. they managed to track her to an area near the turkish/syrian border. it is believed she has crossed over. unclear if she is in fact with isis. french authorities vowed to bring her to justice. if she has reached isis. it will be difficult to accomplish that. they expressed concerns about her propaganda value. the focus in france very much determining the nature of any connections these perpetrators may have to larger terror organizations. we know that the kouachi brothers one of the kouachi brothers trained with an affiliate in yemen. we saw the video of the kosher market attacker coulibaly, pledging authority to isis. these are things authorities are looking into right now. john. >> one question is who was that man in the video we just saw with hayat b

it will be at least several days before we see improvement. 20 flights have been delayed in istanbul. now, on wednesday, the storm system is pushing through on this to syria and portions on of jordan on in to israel. some models are saying 10, 25 centimeters. so much of what will come down will be in the frozen variety and some of the messages are putting 2,000 clearing vehicles to clear the roads. and 2,000 officials out there, as well working on hand and foot there to remove some of the snow from the image pr roadways. here you go here is the perspective, blizzard like conditions. as you imagination. a lot of accidents across the region are. and when you move away from this out towards portions of the middle east you see the refuges that are displaced in the region here is the weather, you see the satellite imaginary, the snow showers are beginning to fall in portions of lebanon, that is hire elevation, so conditions will be very rough for the people in the shelters. a lot of the tents, mistake shift shelters you see tires and weight on top to keep the top ones down. and the winds w
