. >> many thanks for that, ivan. >>> andrew, stormy s yy skies o markets as well. >> you could say that. still ahead, more on the uncertainty which is rattling investors across the world this hour. stay with us. >>> welcome back. you are watching "world business today." >> let's see what's going on in europe. 19 minutes into the trading session, here's where we stand at the moment. significant losses across the board. some of these markets opening down in excess of 3%. so far i can tell you we have our eighth day of losses for world markets. world markets have lost $4.5 trillion on the back of concerns. andrew? >> extraordinary numbers. the index of global -- of global stocks is down 10% in the past ten days or so. that's officially a correction. gives you an idea of this selloff. though it's big today, it has been building. in asia, investors taking a hammering, particularly in hong kong. hong kong down 4.3%. all the markets getting hammered. shanghai getting away with most likely 2%. it wasn't just those big markets, if you look at seoul, taipei, mumbai as well, all taking big hits. l

cnn's ivan wattson is watching the development from istanbul. >> reporter: gloria, the protesters haven out for more than 5 1/2 months despite a crackdown that claimed more than 2,200 lives and some have adopted a new strategy. take a look at the videos. it shows some siyrian protester clapping and demanding that people want international protection. you can see them holding up signs that say we need international protection. this is a sharp change in the past. the syrian protesters have specifically said they do not want any type of libya-style foreign military intervention. in fact, one prominent syrian opposition group has come out with the statement saying it totally opposes any kind of foreign military intervention. or armed resistance inside saying this would erode the popular international support and the moral high ground that the syrian revolution has enjoyed thus far. meanwhile, growing pressure from foreign governments, neighbors of the syrian regime here in turkey. the turkish president coming out and saying he has lost all confidence in his former syrian ally. take a liste

there's now been a panel of the national science foundation which has raised questions about whether ivan is the man who -- at fort dietrich identified as the man being response for this. in fact, he was the man. while there's still significant questioning by a group as thoughtful as that, i think the invest vest should not be closed. because it's in america's interest to know as much as we can about who did it, what was the method of acquiring access, was it done alone or representative of a larger effort? we have found in our final commission report that we thought it was more likely than not the less policies in the united states and globally were changed dramatically and expotentially, that there will be a successful use of a weapons of mass destruction some place on earth before the end of 2013. and that it was more likely the weapon would be a biological weapon than a nuclear weapon. with those kind of stunning projections, i think we need to know everything that we can about the major biological attack that has, in fact, taken place in the united states. >> okay. do you want -- lis

we'll talk to our ivan watson there in just a minute.want to tell you we're broadcasting from a location that we thought was pretty safe up until about half an hour ago and after that heavy fire, we got a report that pro-mubarak forces have left the area around liberation square and have now fanned out into some other neighborhoods, and the security situation where we are has changed somewhat from the last 30 minutes or so. we've been advised to actually turn off our lights, get down on the floor and try to barricade ourselves in the area that we're in, so that's -- that's why we're doing this program like this tonight. it's not going to look very good over the next hour but i hope you bear with us because what has happened today in egypt on these streets has been nothing short of extraordinary. the entire situation has changed here in the last 12 hours. people have died who did not need to die. people will die tonight who do not need to die, and there were many people wounded today. we don't have actual numbers for you, but what we have
