ivan lopez was being treated for depression and anxiety. although he was not officially diagnosed with post-traumatic stress or post-traumatic stress disorder, it matters what you call it. we'll talk about that in a second. he was in the process of being evaluated for it. we may never know if ptsd was a factor in this incident. just last month a psychiatric evaluation showed no sign that he was a danger to himself or a danger to others. so joining me now to talk about this, chief medical correspondent dr. sanjay gupta and cnn military analyst major general james spider marks. we know army specialist lopez had behavioral and mental issues and was in the process of being evaluated for ptsd. general milley said he was in the system. generally speaking, can you explain the evaluation process here? how long it takes, what this entails? >> sure. while there is screening effort for a lot of returning soldiers, the first step oftentimes they have to identify they may be having some of these symptoms and seek out an evaluation. so that's an importan

investigators say ivan lopez turned the gun then on himself. >> in 15 minutes, first responders fromhe military police and the emergency services responded to the scene, engaged the shooter and the shooter is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> ivan lopez was active military and a truck driver on the base reportedly served four months in iraq in 2011. he was not wounded in battle but he was treated for traumatic brain injury and anxiety and depression while being evaluated for possible post-traumatic stress disorder. >> he was always smiling and waving when i saw him. >> this. a imagine is five years off another lone gunman claimed 13 lives at ft. hood the deadliest shooting ever on a military installation. >> the folks there have sacrificed so much on behalf of our freedom and many of the people have been through multiple tours in iraq and afghanistan and they serve with valor and they have served with distinction and when they are at whom base they need to feel safe. >> at this point, investigators are not ruling anything out. >> we will have continuing coverage of ft. hoo

ivan slip knot. have learned from officials sources he transferred from fort bliss, texas in february. i'm told he has at least three dependent children. he wife was questioned by authorities last night. questions are raised by officials why he remained an e-4 specialist. that raises some red flags. >> a very experienced soldier, had a one year deployment to the sinai. with the national guard, and then had a four-month deployment in iraq. the last four months at the end of 2011. >> nine years in the putter reek to national guard, deployed twice overseas in 2007 to the sinai, and in 2011 in iraq. he was never involved in a firefight. he drove trucks during perhaps the safest time in iraq. >> there's been lat of talk about security procedures. at first glances, this doesn't sound like a security matter at all. this guy could legally be there. i guess you could put everybody through metal detectors. we could do that here. >> of course, the pentagon says they couldn't put everyone through metal detectars

according to the father of one of the soldiers that ivan lopez wounded, he said his son saw ivan lopez enter a personnel office on wednesday, requesting a form to ask for a leave. he was told no by the officers there. and at that point ivan lopez retrieved his gun, returned fire on soldiers inside, killing three and wounding 16. we are learning more about who this map was, his history in puerto rico, where he grew up. according to his friends on the island in november of last year, ivan lopez's mother died of a heart attack, and he had been upset because the army gave him a 48 hour leave to attend his funeral and he was upset when he was unable to attend the funeral of his grandfather. who also passed away. the question of leave appeared to have been a touchy subject for ivan lopez, and that is why investigators are looking at it. >> this brings back painful memories from five years ago. how is the community there dealing with a second tragedy. >> well, i think it's deja vu for them. and they cannot believe in less than five years this is happening again. in 2009 it was when major nida
