ivan watson is outside the mine in soma, turkey.van, what are officials telling you about the possibility of air pockets and survivors? >> well, what they've been doing over the last couple of hour, erin, they suspended the rescue operations to allow the venting out of some of the poisonous fumes that are believed to have accumulated in the mine shaft as a result of this electrical fire that exploded into flames on tuesday deep underground. and what we have been seeing is like billowing clouds of this white acrid smoke coming out. it appears from one of the entrances to the mine. and that is the smoke that is believed to have killed so many of the coal miners inside. now, some of the rescue workers that i have talked to who have retrieved some lifeless bodies of some of the coal miners, they say, you know, there could be hope of somebody surviving if they had gotten perhaps to some of the emergency rooms deep in the mines where there were believed to be kind of breathing devices and air tanks. and if those workers could have sealed

tell us more, ivan. >> reporter: that's right, carol.erlooking the sprawling mine complex behind me, this gritty coal mine outside the town of soma in turkey, where this race against time is underway. sadly, tragically, the death toll seems to grow every couple of hours with the turkish prime minister who recently visited here, saying it has now been confirmed 232 coal miners killed as a result of what authorities say was an electrical fire that broke out deep below the surface of the mountain here, on tuesday. now rescue workers that i've spoken with that were working throughout the night, i spoke with two turkish rescue workers. they say they brought up the bodies of six men overnight. they said it takes more than 45 minutes to navigate the different mine shafts, and galleries down there to try to reach the areas where the workers were when the fire broke out. they say that it is terribly hot as a result of the fires, and that there is a massive amount of smoke that the rescue workers have to go in, carrying oxygen tanks. if anybody is

ivan watson reports from soma. >> reporter: it's here not far from the entrance to the soma coal mine that a crowd a walts during a grim vigil, as coal miners, their lifeless bodies, are being brought out one by one. hundreds of men were trapped in the mine shaft when the fire, an electrical fire, broke out on tuesday. the government says 90 people have been pulled out. the smoke and carbon monoxide poisoning seems to be the chief cause of death. the turkish prime minister has come to visit to see as the family members, as rescue workers wait here. he has vowed to investigate the causes behind what could be one of the most deadly mining disasters in turkish history, but he also went one step further to say that this mine had recently been inspected and that it had a clean bill of health. the questions about culpability, who could be responsible, that will be resolved perhaps in the days and weeks ahead, certainly debated and discussed. in the meantime, this is a disaster that has devastated communities in the mountain west mining district of western turkey. as one rescue worker i spok

ivan? >> again, today, we are looking at storms rolling through the u.s.sterday, we had numerous tornado reports and also hail reports as well along the midwestern part of the united states. on the eastern seaboard as well. some of these did touch down with some damages. i think today even worse we'll show you where that area is going to be. look at the record rainfall, 90 millimeters in a short amount of time. that fell within a few hours causing significant flash flooding in new orleans. and so for today, showers and storms are going to roll through parts of texas and extending up into the north and in fact on the back side of this system, snow is going to be falling with winter storm warnings in effect for parts of the rockies, that includes denver there. and where you see the red here, that's indicative of where we are likely to see some significant storms later on. so we'll watch that closely. in china, it's been raining heavily here with also plenty of lightning as well. some of these thunderstorms that do blow up, shangchuan getting heavy rainfall.

our ivan watson is on the scene. >> reporter: throughout the afternoon rescue workers have been bringingers out of the coal mine on stretchers carrying them down these small steps. on occasion we can hear members of the crowd there gathered around the ambulance at the entrance to the mine shaft yelling as the workers are brought out and from this vantage point it's very difficult to tell the health condition of the people as they're being brought out. sadly, tragically, four more people have died as a result of this mine disaster than survivors have been brought out. turkish government estimating a bit over 90 survivors brought out while the death toll has steadily increased to at least 238 people killed as a result of what authorities say was an electrical fire that broke out on tuesday reportedly during a shift change when you would have many, many hundreds more coal miners down at the bottom of the shaft. i talked to some of the rescue workers. they say that there are up to five miles of alleyways and galleries down there. the rescue workers that i talked to who were down in the mines

senior international correspondent ivan watson is joining us by phone. eye v ivan,what do we know?t hard by a catastrophe that many lawmakers here are calling the worst mining disaster in turkey history. we have seen probably more than 1,000 police deployed, hundreds of people out on the streets of the small mining town outside the hospital. ambulancing moving around, as well as funeral vehicles as the number of the dead continue to increase. the rescue workers are trying to work depths of perhaps more than a mile under ground to reach the hundreds of miners that are still believed to be trapped under ground. the latest death toll is 200 people killed. mostly as a result, we believe, of smoke
