meteorologist ivan cabrera joins us to explain why it carries the potential to be quite dangerous. yeah multiple things going on here, errol. making a beeline for taiwan. high probability of it striking directly at taiwan over the next 72 hours. formidable typhoon here. this was the strongest in 2015. it was a super typhoon. it's weakened somewhat. but the winds still a dangerous 175 kilometers per hour. and in fact intensifying a little bit more over the next few days as we talk about -- well, in about 36 hours right before it makes landfall winds of 215 kilometers per hour. and it just goes right into taiwan over the next couple of days here. you have just about a day to get things prepared as this thing begins to move in. now, the reason for that is we have the winds that are going to be moving in. take a look at that. by the time we get to friday at 1700 we're already going to be experiencing tropical storm force winds. you do not want to be out with winds in excess of 50 80 kilometers per hour and then of course the storm continues headed off to the west. and look at this. jus

ivan cabrera has the details on the weather. ivan, help us understand how bad this could get. >> the drought is setting the stage. any time we get a fire going california it gets out of hand. what we are showing you is essentially the fires that are being worked. over a dozen fires. the one we are going to focus in on, we are talking about it consuming up to 18,000 acres. western wildfires have consumed over 5.5 million acres, ruffle the size of new jersey. it continues to get worse. we don't get the rain where we need it in california. 18,000 acres have burned as a result of lake county fires. this is about 18,000 miles. it got out of hand yesterday which is why they had to call in extra help. a few showers in the forecast. this is actually terrible. we're going to have some thunderstorms building up through the afternoon. we could get lightning out of that. it is not going to be a flow from the ocean with light, moderate kate. we have the potential for lightning. temperatures in the upper 80s to lower 90s. the winds will kick u

. >> meteorologist ivan cabrera joins us now. everyone looking to the forecast wanting to know if conditions are going to ease up, what the future holds at least over the next couple days. >> over the next few days i think we may even get a couple of showers out there but just crossing our fingers here at this point. this is the dry season there. so to get any rain in california this time of year would be something. but what we don't want is the temperatures he to go higher than they have been 37 we've seen triple-digit heat there. at least we're doing a little better. let's recap here what we already know now, including three counties there in california. 67,000 acres. containment is higher. but the structures that are being threatened actually going up. so we're approaching now 7,000 structures threatened and we have a lot of people displaced. firefighting efforts will continue as far as the weather we'll get to that in a second. look at this now. 67,000 acres. we're talk an area now that has burned that is larger than the squa

and we want to get to that with ivan cabrera.e's been trying to examine the weather and some of the flying conditions there. >> i wish i had radar in this part of the world. we don't, so we have to work with satellite. but you can get a pretty good indication of weather conditions in any part of the world. i've put the clock here and we're going to put this in motion. this is saturday night local time. this is jar ra puyapura. this is oksibil here. there was no thunderstorm activity across that region during this time. we talk about wind patterns across the region. sure, you can get some gusty winds. if the winds are horizon, that is not an issue. the issue would be vertical wind. as you're passing through the mountains, the winds can variate. but no big thunderstorms across the region. this is what we can see during the daylight. again, not much activity here. the airport itself, 2500 feet. so we're talking some pretty high elevation as it took off. and this is just called pa eed. this is a province of indonesia. over the next f

and according to our meteorologist, ivan cabrera, this has been a particularly active fire season.on acres burned above average. the good news in all of this is no one has been killed, just those ten firefighters that have been injured so far. >> all right, thank you so much. let's talk more about this because lightning may have sparked a lot of the fires in washington state. meteorologist allison chinchar has more on the conditions there. this is a very tough battle. >> it is indeed. and a lot of conditions are working a lot of the firefighters. now again, as we mentioned, we're dealing with about 6.5 million acres. it's about the equivalent size of new hampshire, but it's not just that, it's also the weather conditions that surround the firefighters trying to battle this blaze. beneath me you will see all of where we are experiencing all of these wildfires. so let's take a look. we have a lot of them spread across much of the western u.s. right now 83 active, large fires. so this does not include some of the smaller fires included in that 6.5 million acres burned. in addition to

ivan cabrera is in our cnn weather center with that part of the story. what are they looking at? the best case is going to be the overnight hours when we get a little humidity. even that will not be all that much and focus in on the afternoon. over a dozen fires burning in california, which is not including the smaller fires of which there are many. we are talking about the major fires which are being worked out. >> the drought that we are talking about over the last four years. we have 46% of california is under exceptional drought. this is going to be a problem. this particular fire we are fighting 18,000 acres have now burned. 5% containment. that is terrible here. in fact that 18,000 really spiked it yesterday. we got a change in the wind. now, things are moving to the south and west. 6100 structures are under warning as far as the potential for them being burned and firefighters are doing the best they can. steep terrain out there. it is going to be quite a task over the next few days. look at the temperatures here. this isn't helping. upper 80s to low 90s. the humidity is g

. >>> and ivan cabrera joins us now.his case over the last several days what complicated things and made it worse was a tropical cyclone that parked itself over the bay of bengal and did not move. let's take you over to the wall. we can show folks at home what has been happening here. look at this low. the clock now on wednesday as i put this into motion you will be able to see not much happens. it stays in the same position. we have these downpours off the bay and into myanmar with very heavy rainfall upwards over a meter of rainfall in just a few days. the low is now over in india. you will see servy rain thereheavy rain there. we will not talk about the low centered and stuck and not moving here. typical monsoonal rains is what we're back into. but the damage is done and the flood waters that you saw, that is going to take a very long time for the waters to recede. look at this thunderstorm complex that put down 300 millimeters of water. i want to show you what that did to portions of that province there. incredible s

ivan cabrera is here with the latest. this is not letting up. >> it's not letting up. have some spot fires that have developed over the last several days because of those lightning strikes. 71% of the state under extreme drought. 46% under exceptional drought. in those areas is where we're fighting those fires. we're working 20 major fires. we're seeing hundreds across california, but the ones we're concerned about, about 80 miles to the north of san francisco, that is the headaclake county f the rocky fire. consumed up to 27,000 acres. they are not having a handle on this. the containment remains at 5%. it just continues to get worse. take a look at 1980 to 1989. we only had 140 fires per year. now we're up to 250 and it will likely go up because of the recent drought conditions. the forecast not looking good. temperatures hot with highs in the 90s and gusty winds through the afternoon which could set more spot fires and in addition to that those lightning strikes as well. we will have some thunderstorms close, not good enough to put the fires out with rain, but close

ivan cabrera tracking our first hurricane the season. >> it's the first major hurricane of the atlanticason and we are getting the update from the national weather service down to a hundred miles per hour so no longer a major hurricane. take you back to where this thing, i think, peaked out. a discernible eye. this is about 24 hours ago and put this in motion and see what happens to danny here. we lose the eye a clear indication this is continuing to weaken as it heads off to the north and west. the winds down to a hundred miles an hour. still far away from the leeward and winward islands. this is the wind sheer map. the reason it's weakening upper level winds coming in out of the south and west and disrupting the center of circulation. it's displacing the wind sheer of the thunderstorms to east here and it's not allowing danny to continue to organize. in fact, what it's doing is it's allowing for it to weaken. it also to deal with all of the this color you see here the light brown is indicative of very dry air so it is going to continue to weaken danny as it heads off to the north and
