ivan watson live in kabul. what do you think, ivan? can it happen? >> reporter: well, hi there, kyra. what we have seen from the karzai government for years is aa an atempt to try to convince taliban commanders to put down the weapons and those efforts largely failed an enwhat we saw here today was his creation, first meeting of basically a counsel of tribal elders and religious leaders, some former warlords with very bad human rights records of past wars and they're going to be tasked with trying to reach out to the taliban, try to negotiate a settlement. i talked to one of those members of this high peace counsel. he says there will be conditions if some deal will ever be made. >> what kind of peace, an honorable peace we want. not accept all wishes of tali n taliban. they should accept our constitution, our values like freedom of press, like gender, like these things. >> reporter: now, kyra, there have been a lot of swirling reports in the media that the karzai government having high-level contacts with the taliban. his aides continue to deny thos

ivan watson joins us now from afghanistan from the capital. for the last several days you know we've been reported to you there have been attacks on these convoys of fuel and supplies going into afghanistan because the pakistanis have blocked that supply route from going in. ivan has brand new information on this. ivan, what have you got? >> reporter: that's right. by our account now, this is going to be the sixth convoy of tanker trucks headed to nato international forces here in afghanistan torched just across the border on the pakistani side of the border. pakistani police telling us unknown assailants attacked the oil tankers using rockets and machine guns. further down south along that border another convoy of trucks was attacked earlier today. the taliban on the pakistani side the border claimed responsibility and one person was killed while about 20 tanker trucks were torched in that attack. ali. >> ivan, what is this all about? why have these attacks been taking place over the last six days? what is pakistan doing to deal with this? >>

ivan watson live from kabul right now. good to see you. what's being talked about here? >> reporter: well, tony, let me just direct you to what a high-ranking afghan official said in an exclusive interview with cnn a few hours ago and says members of the taliban want to talk peace with the afghan government. take a listen. >> there have been approaches made to the afghan government by various groups of people and individuals claiming that they belong to the taliban and they want to come and they want to join the main social political stream of the afghan society, and they want to live in peace. >> reporter: now, tony, i do have to point out that the afghan government has been trying to get the taliban to put down their weapons and convince commanders to join the government in the process of reconciliation for years. it's trying to reboot that reconciliation process tomorrow with the meeting of a high peace council. that same afghan government officials, though, concedes that it's very hard to find somebody to negotiate with with the taliban. it's hard to figure out who i

ivan watson joins us live from kabul. what is or isn't being said? >> reporter: well, fredericka, i have come from an exclusive interview with the afghan education minister and did reveal there have been two days of closed-door meetings taking place here in kabul at a hotel described as track two d diplomacy. the elite trying to talk about ways to resolve the conflict that's been going on in this country. this is the first real public news about these meetings. some of the officials that have been participating are, for example, the former head of pakistan's isi intelligence service, a former pakistani interior minister, as well. this is mediated by the government of the emirate of abu dubai and a representative of the united nations present and they even met with the afghan president hamid karzai, as well. was the taliban participating? i asked the education minister this. he said if you consider the former taliban ambassador to pakistan, a man who served several years at the guantanamo bay detention center, not fighting against the afghan governmen

i want to take you live to kabul, afghanistan to ivan watson. sad news we are getting.as attempted. it turns out the rescue attempt didn't go the way people were hoping it would. >> reporter: that's right, t.j. grim and tragic news. britain's foreign office, the foreign secretary released a statement. he's expected to make a televised statement in moments announcing the 35-year-old british worker was killed last night in a rescue attempt to try to free her from her captors nearly two weeks after she was kidnapped in the eastern afghan p provens. she was overseeing $150 million project to create jobs in afghanistan. she was captured with three afghan employees nearly two weeks ago. over the course of her captivity, there was a two-pronged effort to free her. military operations, helicopter troop that is were brought in more than a week ago to try to make some effort to free her. local tribal elders were trying to negotiate for her release. the british, some kind of rescue operation went out. the foreign secretary william hague saying in his statement she was killed at th

ivan watson is in kabul with the latest. ivan?the standards of a country who has been at war for 30 years. a bomb ripping through a packed mosque through the province of peek prayers. they say that 20 people were killed an 35 wounded. among the dead, the muslim cleric leading prayers and the governor of the neighboring province by the name of muhammad omar, and they say that he has survived five previous taliban attempts. we spoke to him last sunday by telephone and in that interview, he made a desperate call for help and he said that taliban insurgents controlled 40% of the province and he did not have enough afghan national police to beat down the insurgents and certainly the taliban are the chief suspects of the bombing attacks which highlights the increasing instability of the country north of the country where you and i could have traveled through safely three or four years ago. it has been going downhill. a german soldier was killed in another northern province in a suicide bombing just yesterday. wolf? >> thank you, ivan. i
