i spoke to ivan watson a short time ago.s parliament held an emergency closed door session today. what was the outcome of that? >> reporter: they voted in favor of a new resolution which is rather vaguely written, but basically it gives the turkish government authority to send its armed forces into quote, unquote, foreign countries, basically in response for the deaths of these five civilians on wednesday. it's very clear that this is focused on syria in particular and it says that the turkish government can decide the scope or the size or the duration of any of these proposed military operations. turkish officials have come out and said this is not a war resolution. they're saying this is more a preventive measure. basically a warning to the syrians not to shoot into turkey again. >> so there's no plans right now of turkey sending in military forces? >> reporter: well, what they have done is that since wednesday, they've fired repeatedly artillery across the border near this flashpoint town where the turkish civilians were

cnn senior international correspondent ivan watson is joining us on the phone now from istanbul. an, that a nato ally, in this particular case turkey, is drawn into potentially another war with a neighbor, syria, what happened? >> reporter: well, in the afternoon on wednesday mortars crashed into a turkish border town. we've talked to eyewitnesses there, local officials. they say a mother, her three children and a female neighbor were killed by mortars fired from the syrian side of the border. and that town is repeatedly been hit by syrian artillery over the last couple of weeks. the turks have even launched formal complaints about that. but this is the first time there have been fatalities, wolf. and now within the last hour or so the turkish government announced that it retaliated firing artillery at targets inside syria using radar to pinpoint those targets. key questions here, wolf, are how many rounds of artillery were fired? what were the targets? how extensive was this? was this mainly a show of force? or were the turks trying to do some harm against syrian military forces
