let's now go to cnn senior international correspondent ivan watson who is in jakarta, indonesia, for us live. ivan, what's the latest information you're getting there on the scene? >> reporter: well, the police say that all of the attackers, there were five of them, they all died after the initial attack began here at this starbucks and then it kind of fanned out through this square. i'm going to spin right around here. this is normally a very busy place, but it's about 4:00 in the morning. and this is where gunmen were walking around with guns, throwing grenades, self-detonating explosive devices, attacking that cube over there, which is a police traffic control booth. and as you can see here there's some indonesians bringing a bouquet of flowers, condolence message for some of the people who were hurt in this attack. unlike paris, unlike isis attacks, jake, this did not cause mass casualties. and the scale of the damage actually in the starbucks is not devastating. it is not a massive, massive explosive device that went off here. that said, this is the worst attack that jakarta has

cnn's senior international correspondent ivan watson is in hong kong with much more. ivan, what more are you learning about what happened and what folks know about it so far? >> reporter: well, the world found out that something happened when the earth shook in north korea to a magnitude of 5.1 magnitude this morning. and within about an hour or so, north korea began announcing that it had carried out what it said was a hydrogen bomb test with a very triumphalist note, describing this as a, quote, h-bomb of justice and saying that it was a measure of self-defense against what it claimed was a campaign of threats coming from the u.s. and its allies in the region. state tv put out pictures of what it said was the north korean leader, kim jong-un, signing the letter the order to carry out this test last december on december 15th and saying that this would be a great way to start 2016 before going into a convention for the only political party in north korea that's scheduled to take place in may. this is also just two days before the birthday of kim jong-un that this was

ivan watson is in hong kong. and i want to start with you paula. >> reporter: certainly the south korean president says it is a clear provocation what's happened. there needs to be a concerted effort from around the world to make north korea pay a price saying the u.s. south koreans and all their allies have to get together and make sure they do suffer, whether it is with sanctions, which it has to be said which not prevented this nuclear test from going ahead. we know that from around the region there has been condemnation. but also here in south korea there is questions as to whether or not this was a hydrogen bomb. north korea made an announcement saying it was an success that it is an h-bomb and the reason they had to go and hadn't do this is the united states they say it was a self defense mechanism. they have blamed the united states for the nuclear tests and missile tests in the past. i don't think this will be the last time we hear that from pyongya pyongyang. they also released a photo showing kim jong-u

cnn's senior international correspondent ivan watson is live for us now in that capital city of jakarta. this just follows a couple of days after ten german tourists were killed in istanbul, another suicide blast, another isis claim of responsibility. it looks as though the m.o. is to go after where the foreigners congregate. is that what they're telling you there? >> that could be one interpretation of it. certainly it's the first time that jakarta has seen a major terror attack in some six years. fortunately, not anywhere near on the horrific scale of some of the bombings that indonesia saw in the last decade. in this case, it sounds like there were about five attackers. one first self-detonated in that starbucks. and then chillingly we believe two of the attackers tried to grab two people out in the street to try to execute them. one of them believed to be a foreigner. and then very close by in the intersection that's behind me there was an attack on an indonesian -- basically traffic police booth. and in the end, two people killed. one of them, a foreigner. one an indonesian civilia

our senior international correspondent ivan watson is joining us now live from jakarta. ivan, this is the world's most populous muslim country. the attacks seem to be aimed at westerners. what is the very latest? >> that's right, it was an attack that started with a suicide bomb detonated in a starbu starbucks. it's about 150 feet from where i'm standing right now in a very busy intersection, a popular shopping mall that normally right now would be open 24 hours, the fast food restaurants. it's all quiet right now after this attack. we then hear that two of the attackers tried to grab two people and pull them out into the street. believe they tried to target foreigners and kill them. and then there was another group of attackers on motorcycles who tried to attack a very nearby indonesian traffic police booth that's in the center of the intersection back here. in the end, two people were killed. one of them is an unidentified foreigner. another was an indonesian civilian. at least 19 wounded. indonesian police say five attackers were killed in all. isis has claimed respons

our international correspondent ivan watson joins us from jakarta with the latest. what do we know now about this attack? >> reporter: anderson, the indonesia authorities say the suspected mastermind of the attack that began with the suicide bomb attack against that starbucks right there is a man they say is indonesian and arrested for possessing ammunition and after released in 2014 they say he traveleded to syria, joined isis and is now based in raqqah there, the isis stronghold. they say their intelligence says that he sent orders here to his network in indonesia to carry out attacks before christmas and around new years eve. the security forces stepped up their security and then it wasn't until thursday that this attack was carried out here and the attackers moved into -- you can see how busy this is, rush hour and they attacked this police booth over here severely wounding a police officer, two civilians killed in this attack. one was algieria born citizen. >> reports that a blog belonging to the man was found. do we know what was on that? >> reporter: yeah, th
