cnn's ivan watson is at the airport and joins us on the phone. ivan, you've arrived in the last few moments. tell us what you're seeing. >> reporter: i'm standing at the counter at japan airlines in the departure terminal. there is a mob of hundreds of demonstrators, journalists, and i think one individual that some suspect of being an undercover police officer. they tried to get paramedics in to get this person out. somebody who looked barely conscious. it's just chaos basically of trying to get somebody out. it's a very chaotic scene. there is not one leader of this predominantly youth protest movement that has paralyzed one of the world's busiest airports. once a symbol of hong kong's efficiency and now completely out of control. it looks like the demonstrators almost fighting amongst themselves about what to do and i see them kicking somebody on the floor of the airport. it's very, very ugly, john. very, very ugly. >> ivan, to your point about maybe disagreements or lack of communication between and among the protesters, we're showing you live

for more on this i'm joined by cnn's ivan watson. he's reporting from hong kong. ivan? >> reporter: hi there, cyril. the two missiles were launched around dawn from north korea splashing into the sea identified as short-range ballistic missiles. what's striking is this is the fifth time that north korea has fired salvos of these missiles in 2 1/2 weeks. if you look at the time line, it is quite busy not only this morning but also early in the morning on august 6th, on august 2nd, on july 31st, on july 25th. now years ago before they engaged in face-to-face diplomacy, president trump used to deride the north korean dictator calling him little rocket man, but hours before this most recent launch took place on saturday morning, president trump was instead celebrating the fact that he received another, as he put it, very beautiful letter from kim jong-un. take a listen. >> he really wrote a beautiful brief, hey, right top from bottom, a beautiful letter. yeah, he gave me a great letter. i would love to give you but i don't think it would be appropriate. it was very personal

ivan watson is at a march. and ben wedeman is in causeway bay. first, ivan. what are you hearing about the teargas that we've been seeing? >> at this location, we have a confrontation lining up right now. this is a police station where the officers are on alert, nervous. they've been sending warnings repeatedly. you see the blue flags saying they could use force, telling the demonstrators not to point their lasers and to back off and residents to close their windows. down the street, in a standoff, like on urban okay corral, demonstrators with their helmets and masks and ripped out traffic barriers to create makeshift barriers. this is a standoff that's been going on for 20 minutes, half an hour now. the police stations in the city, as the ten-week civil disobedience phenomenon has become a target for some of the hard-line protesters who engage in vandalism and periodic clashes with the riot police. at this location, we have not seen teargas. there's been reports in another location. it's worth noting, in this part of town, the demonstration began, it was an

cnn's senior international correspondent ivan watson is there at the hong kong airport. ivan, tell us about the situation there on the ground now. >> reporter: well, brianna, it's calmed down considerably, but about an hour ago, this area here right by the japan airlines ticketing desk in the departures terminal was mobbed with a very tense crowd of hundreds of protesters who had encancircledo individuals here. i saw some of them beating a man on the ground, others trying to protect him. this went on for some time until first aid workers were able to finally bring that person out on a gurney out of the airport. he has since been identified as a journalist working for the chinese state news outlet, global times. i've looked at his passport. it's among some of the personal effects that some of the protesters here have seized and that they're now going through and displaying here. but long story short, it was a very ugly scene in what is normally a bustling transport hub. this is described as the world's eighth busiest airport, now per paralyzed for the second night in a row

ivan watson live in hong kong with the very latest. what are you hearing about these missile launches? and good morning. >> reporter: they seem to be taking place every couple of days the good morning christi and martin. this is becoming a bit of a routine now. they were fired, according to the south korean military, after 5:00 a.m. local time. and, as you mentioned, this is the fifth such salvo of short-range ballistic missiles in about two and a half weeks. now the last time this took place, august 6, the north koreans said -- they issued a statement saying they were very unhappy with the fact the u.s. and south korea would be conducting annual joint military exercises which the south koreans say should start tomorrow. and that is why the south korean national defense ministers and security ministers say they anticipate more launches coming from north korea in the near future as well. what's really striking about this is that the trump administration has been downplaying the missile launches. just a couple years ago president trump u

let's go to cnn international correspondent ivan watson in hong kong there because this is not dying down. this is still going pretty strong, i see. >> reporter: it certainly is. this is truly the summer of discontent for hong kong. as you mentioned, the 9th straight weekend of protests here, where some of the protesters and some of the police have used we have not see here happily. what you see instead is a predominantly young demographic of demonstrators, most of them covering their faces and some of them equipped with helmets and protective gear, anticipating perhaps trouble. they have moved outside of an area that was authorized for their protest march at the last minute by police. they themselves are controlling traffic in this incredibly congested city, and the big question is will we see a repeat of the kind of violence that has rocked this city week after week in previous weeks of this standoff. a standoff that i would generalize and describe as a bit of a youth revolt against the city's rulers and by extension, against the communist party government in mainland china. the pr
