ivan watson is monitoring all of the developments. ivan, what more can you tell us?orter: australia's now struggling with this outbreak with fears as you just mentioned of another potential outbreak in the north of the country. with a population that's quite vulnerable. the population is quite low. only 10% of the population has been vaccinated and the immunization program has been plagued with setbacks and missed targets that the government has set for that. in the case of the state of new south wales and sydney, it's at bondai beach where the first case is said to have involved a driver who is transporting airline crews. the numbers are growing pretty dramatically though we're only talking about 110 confirmed cases so far which would be the envy of many other countries in the world struggling with much higher numbers. the authorities are predicting that those numbers will continue to grow. take a listen to the premier. >> i do want to foreshadow given how contagious this strand of the virus is, we anticipate case numbers will increase beyond what we've seen today.

i want to bring in our senior international correspondent, ivan watson. you heard some of the concerns and disagreements laid out the partners have with regard to china. what is the view from where you are? >> china does not like the fact that president biden is trying to create a coalition of western diplomatic democracies. listen to another exert from some of his statements. >> i think we're in a contest, not with china, per se, but a contest with autocrats, autocrat governments around the world as to whether we can compete with them. >> he scored a coup that sorts by getting in a lot of challenging statements into the final g7 communique, and criticizing and challenging china, and conceding that china was a major topic of disagreement between the leaders, particularly among european leaders in the room, such that at one point the internet had to be turned off on the room on saturday because people could not come to an agreement. but in the end biden said he was satisfied with the statement that tries to draw attention to alleged human rights abuses, an

ivan watson is following this from hong kong. why is australia pushing back on this?this is unusual, a government like australia taking aim at unesco with the environment ministry accusing unesco of a back flip and of surprising the australian government by trying to put -- proposing to put the great barrier reef on a list of endangered world heritage sites. i think that everybody gets that the great barrier reef is a treasure. it is nearly 350,000 square kilometers in size, a marine habitat, immensely rich and diverse, bigger than italy. and it has been on the world heritage list since 1981. but its incredible coral forests have been dying due to the rising temperatures of the ocean. there were bleaching events in 2016, 2017 and 2020 that were killing off huge amounts of the coral and the habitat for all the marine life there. unesco has downgraded the health of the great barrier reef from poor to very poor. and australia has been working with uhe nenesco to try preserv. it has invested money in it. but evidently the australian government does not like a formal endan
