cnn senior international correspondent, ivan watson, joins me now from hong kong. te house reporter, jasmine wright, is in washington. ivan, let's begin with you. now, the u.s. president said another attack is likely in the next 24 hours. what are you hearing about the situation on the ground? >> well, the -- the warnings are pretty ominous, especially considering the just sheer carnage and loss of life after thursday's suicide attack -- bomb attack at the gate of kabul airport that claimed the lives of more than 160 afghans, as well as 13 u.s. service personnel. you've heard president biden, himself, say that he's been told that there's a -- a threat likely within the 2 -- next 24 to 36 hours. the u.s. embassy has put out a statement about a specific, credible threat. and the australian department of foreign affairs has echoed that saying there is, quote, an ongoing and very high threat of a terrorist attack. and the fact is that as long as there are western troops in that airport. as long as there are western planes flying in and out. then groups like isis, its br

ivan watson there and of course, ivan has covered afghanistan for many, many years., to jasmine wright in d.c. jasmine, hi. good to see you, as well. so, john kirby there at the pentagon reiterating this saying the drone strike on isis-k won't be the last. certainly, a signal of a new operational environment in afghanistan after 20 years on the ground. >> yeah, robyn. president biden is vowing to do more because thursday's attack that left 13 u.s. service members -- um -- was no doubt a worst-case scenario for this president. one that officials say that day, thursday, has now become one of the worst of his presidency. and so now, while another attack, though it would not be surprising because of that highly likely warning of another attack on the 24 to 36 hours at the kabul airport. it would be devastating. so that's why you see president biden saying that this won't be the last strike because not only is he signaling that, yes, this is retaliation. the u.s. will defend itself. but he is also trying to thwart and really disrupt any potential, future bombings as the -

cnn's ivan watson joining us live. what are you watching for today, ivan?president would respond to the questions from journalists about the humiliating collapse of the u.s.-backed government in afghanistan. she refused to go off script. she basically said that the u.s. is single-mindedly focussed on the difficult mission of evacuation right now. take a listen. >> there will be and should be a robust analysis of what has happened. right now there's no question that our focus has to be on evacuating american citizens, afghans who worked with us, and vulnerable afghans, including women and children. >> reporter: and this trip by the vice president to southeast asia, to singapore, she said the latest in a number of top officials from the biden administration to travel to these countries. part of a bigger strategy that the biden administration had, which was to try to get out of the decades of kind of war on terror wars in iraq and afghanistan and focus on great power competition with countries like china, the world's second biggest economy kind of shoring up a

well, cnn's ivan watson has covered afghanistan extensively over the years. taliban has said all the right things, they've allowed women to work and calls itself the kinder, taliban 2.0. >> reporter: the funds and the international aid upon which a large chunk of the afghan country, the caveat that afghanistan is one of the poorest countries in the world. the international aid that afghanistan depended on has tried up, as the support leaders have been driven from the airport. hundreds of millions of dollars are frozen from the international monetary fund and the imf. the banks are closed in afghanistan right now, so there's a shortage of currency and then a question about whether or not the taliban can handle doing things like running a central bank, monetary policy. things like that. when they were in power 20 years ago, the afghan currency was the value of toilet paper. i mean, it was kind of a joke, really. and there were different kinds of currency floating around afghanistan. a big question will be can the taliban go from being a guerilla fighting force,

senior international correspondent ivan watson joining me from hong kong and jasmine is in washingtonr attack is likely. kbhar you hearing about the situation on the ground, ivan? >> the warnings are dire, being repeated by not only president biden, who as you said mentioned within 24 to 36 hours this could happen and the embassy putting out a statement that's a specific credible threat telling americans to stay away from the embassy -- sorry -- away from the airport gates. i believe we have a live imagine of the airport, so you can see kind of the situation there right now from that vantage point. and the australian foreign affairs department issuing a warning saying that there is, quote, ongoing and high threat of a terrorist attack. given the just grizstly scene. there is ample reason to take these warnings very, very seriously. while the american deadline of august 31st for its complete withdrawal, which has been echoed by the taliban is very much looming, there's also clearly discussion about afterwards. and we're hearing that, for example, not only from the u.s. government which

cnn senior international correspondent ivan watson joins us now from hong kong with more. start with the warnings that another attack is likely we heard within the next 24 to 36 hours. what's the latest? >> reporter: possibly this to be a foreshadowing of what we had the last time these warnings came out, because the suicide bomber struck at the gates of the airport on thursday after similar warnings from the u.s. government, and the death toll was just massive. more than 160 afghan civilians killed as well as 13 u.s. service personnel. so these are warnings that have come from the u.s. president, from the u.s. embassy, echoed by australia's department of foreign affairs, and if you are a suicidal jihadi who wants to kill american troops, you basically have 48 hours left to try to do that, and that's part of why the u.s. government and its allies are taking this so seriously, and are so anxious in these final hours and days. that said, the evacuations have continued from that airport with some 2,000 people evacuated, the u.s. government says in a 12-hour period. i know of

also senior international correspondent ivan watson. gentlemen, thank you all for joining us on this friday evening with the breaking news. alex, i'm going to start with you. what are you learning about the strike? >> reporter: don, we heard these vows of revenge for yesterday's attack by isis-k from president joe biden, and now we appear to have seen some of it though we should be clear that we don't know whether there's a connection between yesterday's attack, which killed scores, and the targeting of this isis-k planner. so we're hearing from centcom, which is the part of the pentagon that is in charge of afghanistan. a spokesman for centcom saying an over the horizon counter-terrorism operation was carried out. that means it came from abroad, and that it was an unmanned air strike, so that means it came from a drone and targeted this i isis-k planner in nangarhar province. it says the strike was successful in taking out this planner and that it appears that no one else was wounded, that there were no civilian casualties. this is a m
