at least three people were hurt, ivan watson is in kyiv for us this hour. een the damage firsthand and are getting new information about the first wave of attacks. what have you learned, ivan? >> reporter: the ukrainian armed forces is calling this a barrage against the infrastructure. i'm at one of the sites hit across the country. in this case people here are lucky, nobody here was killed. the cars were destroyed. it was a frightening morning for residents of this apartment block over here, massive apartment building and it shattered windows around here. but to give you context, i spoke to two women, a mother and her adult daughter whose windows on the seventh floor were shattered. they still went to work this morning, one went to teach, the other went to work at a bank. as you pointed out in the intro, other people were not as fortunate in lviv, at least five people killed, two women, three men. the attacks came from land, sea and air. you had cruise missiles, different types of missiles fired by planes, by ships in the black sea. this appears to have bee

cnn senior international correspondent ivan watson is joining us live from kharkiv in eastern ukraine. this is a significant move by poland to provide these fighter jets. walk us through the potential impact. and might other nato nations follow poland's lead? >> reporter: poland out in front here with the polish president saying four of these mig 29s will be handed over in a matter of days and suggesting there could be a dozen or more on the way after that. there's been discussion about this, but now these seem to be the most concrete steps towards handing them over. the white house has said that handing over f-16s is not in the cards right now, not on the table right now. the advantage here is that these are planes of soviet design, russian design that ukraine already has in its arsenals, that its pilots are already trained in. it's much faster to get them up to speed on this. i heard i'm quite sure ukrainian warplanes roaring very high overhead the other night in eastern ukraine. the russians have not succeeded in establishing air superiority over ukrainian skies. so ukraine still f

ivan watson is on the ground there this morning, and what do we know? >> well, erica and jim, this is not the first time that russia has aimed dozens of missiles aimed at the power grid, but the commander of the armed forces has described this attack as massive and it is targeting critical infrastructure and as you pointed out 81 missiles that the ukrainian say fired as well as those iranian-made sha heed dr drones and they were spread out across the country are the land, sea and air. from the russian ships at sea, and from the planes in the air, and across the country. the anti-aircraft did succeed in shooting down at least 34 of the missiles and four of the iranian suicide drones, but other deadly projectiles did in fact get through to hit kharkiv and the port of odessa in the south, and from here, kharkiv to the capital, and to the western city of lviv, where at least two men and three women were killed in the strikes there. the russian ministry of defense has claimed responsibility here for this saying it is a retaliation for this shadowy incident t

let's go to eastern ukraine and cnn's ivan watson. so this you hear about the state department and the ambassador from russia. one of there's any other information getting? >> well, first it was the defense ministry the confirmed that this incident did in fact take place. i'll repeat some of their arguments. they are saying, that is moscow, that the reaper this drone was approaching crimea with its transponder off. the two russian jets were then scrambled. again the russian defense ministry insisting that no weapons were used against the drone and that there was no contact whatsoever. there's a direct contradiction with which the pentagon is saying has taken place there. i also found it interesting that the russian ambassador specifically said that russia does not what confrontation with the u.s.. he did use some diplomatic language here. but he added that the fact that the drone was flying towards russian airspace where russia has imposed rules in connection with what it calls its special military operation, what the rest of the worl
