for more on that i spoke with ivo daalder, former us ambassador to nato and now ceo of the chicago council on global affairs. i'm sure you are following this week's nato summit very closely, was the gathering in your mind a success? yes, i think it is very difficult to call it anything other than a success. a number of things are very important for the ukrainian audience, it was important that nato reaffirmed not only its commitment to help ukraine in every possible way to defend itself against this brutal invasion that the russians launched, now more than 500 days ago, but also to not only open a door but to say that it is time for ukraine to think about stepping through that door. of membership. it said that the future of ukraine is in nato, president biden said ukraine willjoin nato, the question is not a matter anymore of whether, but of when. it was also significant because it sent a real important signal to russia. nato is stronger, it is more united, it is larger, all as a result of what vladimir putin did when he decided to launch this invasion. we have finland of course already as

back with me tonight to discuss, ivo daalder, president of the chicago council of global affairs. thank you for being here. what do you think of zelenskyy 's reaction? >> i think there's a frustration on his part. he is fighting every day. his country is fighting every day to defend itself. he wants to be part of nato. he thinks he deserves, the country deserves to be part of nato. i think nato agrees with this, as well. it's just hard to bring in a country in the middle of a war into a security alliance that existed in every inch of nato territory. president zelenskyy knows, president biden, knows all nato leaders know that if you were to bring ukraine into nato today, their nato would be going into war against russia. and it's the one thing that nato has said from the very beginning, it was not prepared to do. at the same time, laying out the timeline it says it happened in a year, or when the fighting in, also gives the russians a excuse, frankly, not to end the fighting, not to find a way to end this war. and so that's a dilemma that nato leaders feel, and i think president ze

we get some prespective now from ivo daalder. he was u.s.dor to nato during the obama administration. he is now the president of the chicago council on global affairs. when you look at the summit and what was accomplished, was this a missed opportunity? should the alliance have issued an invitation or at least a timeline or an invitation for ukraine to join? >> i don't think so and it was unrealistic to think it would be an invitation. making an invitation to a country in the middle of war in order to bring it into an alliance that is committed to defending every inch of the territory of all of its members was just not in the cards. it couldn't be expected. what could be expected is a very strong statement and a very strong commitment to move forward with ukraine on multiple fronts. first of all, to provide new weapons so it can launch the counteroffensive with the full backing of western equipment and that was done by a variety of countries. long-range missiles, cluster munitions and tanks and the like. secondly, a long-term commitment that
