what do you put in those essays to sort of influence an ivy league school. nicholas, let me ask you. if the focus now is on these essays that a lot of kid write as they put their applications together for college, you don't have to say you're a minority. you can say about your journey and what got you here and make a reference to that where there's an understanding that you're not used racing but you're using the experience maybe inclusive of race to get some special attention. is that so wrong and does that really change? >> well, you're right. it creates this back door approach. we have to understand that race-based admissions is insulting. it insipates that minorities can compete with counter parts. 50% of my students are minorities and they perform just as well as white and asian counter parts. we need to stop what the racism of low expectations. that's what these race-based initiatives do. they have such a low opinion. so we need to refocus at the college level back on the idea of merritt and scholarship. if we continue down the path where race is the d

those who subscribe to the widely publicized view of what it means to "deserve a position" at an ivy leagueition, what it means to champion "merit-based admissions" they have not met the incredible students, especially students of color i was lucky enough to call my peers at harvard and i did not know that gpa or test scores of every student i met, but what i did know was there unique stories, the stories they had to share, they enhanced my own life and journey in a very singular way. and i truly believe universities have something of an obligation to create rich, diverse, unique learning environments in this way. i also believe that is an obligation not only to their students and the university, but to the greater public as well. this is on my mind a lot more as a recent graduate, but i can imagine the implications that the recent supreme court decision will have reaching into the professional world as well. i can't help but feel like there is a likely danger of us seeing fewer people of color going into academia as professors, fewer people going into medicine, law, environmental policies.

obviously, i'm very grateful that i have an opportunity to go to brown which is an ivy league school,deck is stacked against kids that look like me because of affirmative action which basically is a system which sort of discriminates against asian-american kids because university administrators don't think that we're questioners enough for -- diverse enough for their schools. they think we only like math, no personality, and and they don't think we can contribute to a diverse student body. so instead they have the consider our race as sort of a way to take away from that. and somehow i managed to get into brown, so i'm happy about that. but i think on behalf of all of my fellow students regardless of race, i don't think that that they should be judged on their race when we're deciding who gets into what school. i think it'd be much better if we just looked at people's acheechs and stuff we can actually control. rachel: it's not just asian-americans, i talk to if many white males who also feel they're discriminated against. so it may not be that they think asians don't have, you know,

i understand that your lives are improved by going to the ivy league university, but it should be made available to everybody and not the interests of one. >> what opportunity dos ies do e as the diversity and in some people, it is a four-letter word, but some do you a student body for people with different places and different perspectives, and what do you see that interest to be? >> i think that different places and different perspectives are important, but race is a horrible proxy for those. as you know, 45% of harvard's black students are black immigrants, and 73% of them come from upper middle-class or higher backgrounds. that point, a black american admitted to harvard is more likely to have more in common with a white upper class american than a truly poor disadvantaged american. >> so taking harvard in account, 15% african-american, and 27% asian american, and 12% hispanic, and 2% native american. so do you worry about what this is going to do to population now as the schools are struggling to try and have a diverse student bo body? >> i do not understand why you think they are
