wen, i know you're one of 13 million people who got the j&j vaccine. was that answer satisfactory to you? >> no, it wasn't, although i like the rest of dr. collins's answer. i think it's good the biden administration is being proactive. during this entire pandemic, we have been behind. we have not been anticipating what is ahead. i'm glad they're laying out this general booster plan. this plan still applies to people who got the mrna vaccines. so far the people who got the j&j vaccine we're feeling increasingly left behind. many were told get the first vaccine that you have access to. now they feel like they are being punished. the advice is not being offered to them. at this point we have enough data from other countries. there are mix and match studies for astrazeneca and mixing that and pfizer. germany allowed the mix and match. it was recommended. you have a better immune response with that approach. i think there's enough to say people who got the one dose should at least consider getting a booster. i don't need a federal official to say we recomm

i have heard this from people who have gotten the j&j vaccine. they wonder about this. >> that's right. and i think that people who got the j&j vaccine feel like they're being left behind in some way because the recommendations to by and large don't seem to apply to them. here we're talking about 13 million people, of which i am one. and i think it is -- i understand why the cdc said, okay, we don't have enough data for the j&j individuals and probably it's a small group because the people who are immunosuppressed are early on in the process. so we're talking about a small group of people here. however, we can also use our common sense. we know that the j&j vaccine is less effective than the pfizer and moderna vaccines, and we're talking about immunosuppressed people who got a less effective vaccine. common sense would tell us they really should be getting a booster at this time. what i think is good is that individuals now can in consultation with their doctors go to a pharmacy and get a booster dose. so i would definitely recommend, even though

j.the j&j vaccine. johnson & johnson is the one shot, the one and done. it was found in clinical trials to be 66 p% effective. a very strong vaccine and good protection against covid. this was a relatively small study. some of the folks in it received the first shot and then six months later got a booster. what they find is that first shot primed people's bodies. it did a good thing so antibodies increased nine fold from the one shot to the second shot. this was going to be the shot that was going to help in developing countries and where you could move it around and you didn't have to be in low temperatures. never quite happened. >> moderna submitted for full fda approval. timeline on that? >> let's take a look at what happened with pfizer. pfizer completed their submission for full approval back on may 18th and then got approval on august 23rd. moderna submitted it won't be exactly the same time, but it gives you a rough timeline of three or four-ish months. maybe it gives people who a

can the people who got the j&j shot get a booster? >> that is a question that they are actually studying right now, looking to address it. there is a study looking at one vaccine and getting a dose of another vaccine. someone who got j&j and then got an mrna vaccine like pfizer. while we are not formally recommending that, we are studying that. that vaccine is being considered as a recommendation. my hope is that those studies will be positive, because we have other studies in the past that were done in the united kingdom which show that using an mrna vaccine after using the original vaccine which is the cousin of the j&j vaccine platform -- that combination of doing that astrazeneca vaccine was quite effective in boosting immunity. it is very possible that that will be the case, or that the j&j vaccine, i hope it will give us more options. the studies are ongoing and the fda will make a recommendation on that approach. >> here's an audience question. is the full approval of the pfizer vaccine for the same vaccine that is being used,

& j vaccine. the delta variant? will we be eligible for boosters sooner than later if it is losing efficacy more quickly? >> right. the reason the j & j vaccine is getting if you will a little of that reputation like it is a second class vaccine is because we're comparing it to moderna and pfizer. remember, with them you're almost 100% prevented from dying and going into the hospital. if you look at the j&j vaccine, it holds up pretty well for hospitalization. but as you expressed, people who have had the j&j vaccine, they should be talking to their doctors and getting a second shot with an mrna vaccine. that i know has not been officially recommended yet but sometimes in medicine you have to go with common sense. if the j&j vaccine is not as effective as moderna and pfizer, i think they are eligible for the second shot with the mrna vaccine. >> i've talked on several doctors who say, who are questioning why it is taking so long for kids younger than 12 to be approved to get the vaccine. they say

we believe j&j recipients will likely need a booster. the company about a second dose of j&j so the fda can fully evaluate the safety and efficacy of that dose. we also have studies under way that are called mixing stusd where we have one type of vaccine followed by another type of vaccine. that would include j&j followed by a pfizer or moderna vaccine. as soon as that data is available, we can present that to the fda and they can also review it for safety. so, as soon as those studies are done, we'll have more to recommend to j&j recipients about the timing of a booster and which shot they should get. >> health officials in mississippi say that poison control center calls are climbing, because they're seeing residents taking something called ivermectin, anti-parasite drugs for horses and cows to treat coronavirus. this has even led to one hospitalization. can you be clear for the american people on this drug? >> brianna, that is he heartbreaking to hear. let me say very clearly that ivermectin is not a recommended treatment for covid-19

don't take the j&j? are they going to create more clarity here on what to do if you've gotten the j&j vaccine or whether for instance in pregnant women, do you go near the viral vector vaccines? >> yeah, those are all great questions. i think part of the problem is that we have so many people now who have gotten one of those mnra vaccines, pfizer or moderna and so few people have gotten the johnson & johnson vaccine and makes it difficult to study how it acts in certain populations. some doctors told immune compromised patients, people with organ transplants and those living with hiv, people undergoing certain cancer treatments to get those mnra vaccines. that gives them two doses. but, you know, overall, though, the johnson& johnson vaccine is safe and immune compromised people can get the vaccine, however, it's anticipated that the dfa amendment to those emergency use authorizations will only apply to those mnra vaccines, pfizer and moderna. >> okay. what are you supposed to do, erica, if you got a j&j
