j.c. hayward. police have one suspect in custody after five students were shot just as classes began this morning. the shots rang out around 7:30 at char don -- chardon high school. alexis christopherous has more. >> reporter: students filed out and worried parents gathered in the snowy streets to pick up their children. one mother said her daughter witnessed the shooting and that it happened in the school taft tieria before the start of first period. another student says a boy stood up and started shooting and then it was chaos. the exact number of injured is not yet confirmed, but the sheriff says five students are believed shot. four boys and a girl. a brave teacher may have saved lives by running the shooter out of the school. >> the first team of officers went in, it was determined the students had run from the building. >> officers continued to search for more. though the fbi believes there was just one shooter. as students evacuated the high school, they went to the elementary school across

j.c. hayward. >>> it's also been a deadly 48 hours for troops abroad. two soldiers were killed during an attack on a military base in eastern afghanistan. the attack may be tied to the burning of the quran by the u.s. military. >> reporter: afghan police fired on protesters during a third day of violent demonstrations that have now claimed the lives of two u.s. soldiers. cbs news has learned an afghan soldier gunned down two american troops at a military base in a province of eastern afghanistan. an afghan official says the shooter killed the soldiers in retaliation for the burning of qurans at the u.s. air base. it came hours after some radical lawmakers called on afghans to retaliate against foreign troops. president obama has sent a letter apologizing for tuesday's incident calling the burning of the holy book an accident. afghan president karzai says a u.s. military officer burned the holy book out of ignorance and with poor understanding. he's pressing nato to put those responsible on trial. outrage is spreading across the country. these protesters

j.c. hayward. hold on to your hats. because we're raising the severe weather alert flag. there will be powerful intense winds today. howard has been watching his map closely. he's here with details, howard? >> jc, we're concerned about the mid to latter part of this afternoon and then this evening when some of the winds could really get damaging, potentially 50 if not 60-mile an hour wind gusts will be moving in. on the metro itself the wind advisories will be going into effect at 3:00. those are the lighter colored counties around oh, baltimore and washington including montgomery but you get further north and west up toward frederick and leesburg out to northern talk yore county, the blue -- fauquier county, the blue ridge, the shenandoah valley, you guys are in the wind warning and that's when we're talking about the winds potentially gusting 60 miles an hour and west of the blue ridge the wind warning starts rice now at noon. all the warnings and advisories go until midnight. here's the problem a big storm here in the upper midwest. this thing's got very deep pressure

j.c. hayward. thank you very much for joining us. well, this morning in charlottesville, virginia, prosecutors put experts on the stand in the george huguely murder trial. they're trying to refute the defense consternation that yeardley love died from a combination of prescription drugs and alcohol. our 9news now reporter bruce leshan is outside the crouse with more information. bruce -- courthouse with more information. bruce? >> reporter: i just walked out and now we are to perhaps the most rivetting part of the entire prosecution case. right now in the courthouse, they are playing back this videotape statement. you might almost call it a confession, it's awfully close. that george huguely gave to police the morning after yeardley love was found dead. it was kind of -- you know, it happened overnight. so it was just a few hours after she was found dead. and they pick him up at his apartment. they wake him up. they take him down to the police station. they have not yet told him that yeardley love is dead. and they say what happened?

j.c. hayward. thanks for being be us. well, this morning -- with us. well, this morning the police officer who found yeardley love in her apartment testified in the murder trial of george huguely. and lawyers from both sides have been arguing on this first full day of testimony. our 9news now reporter bruce leshan is outside the courthouse with more details, bruce? >> reporter: yeah, j. c., the prosecutor is really trying to paint a picture for this jurors to give them a moment by moment narrative of the response to yeardley love's death. hours after george huguely left her apartment, her roommate discovered yeardley love unresponsive. her mouth taped with dried -- caked with dried blood, her right eye bruised. purple and swollen shut. the first police officer responded told jurors this morning he knew right away this was not an alcohol overdose. he saw yeardley love's battered face and he knew something far more sinister and violent had happened to her. one of the medic who arrived says he tried for more than 24 minutes to breathe life back into her.
