j.c. hayward. a deadly car accident occurred this morning involving a fairfax county police officer. the accident happened just before 3:00 a.m. at the intersection of gum street and francona road. kristen fisher has more now from the scene. >> reporter: this is all that's left of the silver infinity that crashed into a fairfax county police cruiser before bursting into flames. the driver, an adult man, was killed instantly. but somehow the officer, a seven year veteran, was still able to call for help. what happened was the fairfax county police officer was heading this way on ancona road. the driver of the silver infinity was heading this way. for whatever reason the driver swerved into the police officer's lane. the two collided head on. >> that car caught on fire. the driver of the car was pronounced dead on the screen. the officer was transported to a local hospital. >> reporter: fairfax police closed this section of francona road for four hours. they had to clear the roadway to let the accident reconstruction team figure out what happened. what caused the driver of the infinity

j.c. hayward. tropical storm isaac is topping our newscast this afternoon and we have live team coverage. so let's begin with howard in the weather center. howard? >> reporter: we are watching isaac a strong tropical storm likely to become a hurricane later today, maybe by this evening. there he is, gaining some strength. now it hasn't really shown a pressure decrease since this morning, and we look for the pressure to fall as a sign of a strengthening storm. it does have a more impressive appearance here on the satellite than it has had, getting a little bit more symmetrical around the center of circulation. still a little bit of dry air coming in. the weaker it stays the better for everything on the northern gulf coast, especially in southeast louisiana and mississippi. i want to show you the radar view over the past six hours, you can certainly see a center of circulation down there. the other thing i want to point out, look at the rains coming in eastern florida. tampa not that bad, just a few

j.c. hayward. mourners are paying their respects to the victims of the sikh temple shooting in wisconsin. we're going to take a look live at services that are underway right now in oak creek, wisconsin. six worshipers were shot and killed by a white supremacist last sunday. the gunman took his own life. members of the temple were allowed to return to their building yesterday in suburban milwaukee and ed payne has more. >> reporter: with the help of donated supplies, temple members swept, scrubbed and painted over damage from the shooting that killed six people and critically injured three others. they reopened the dining hall where they run an open kitchen for the community. >> our congregation -- they're going to do whatever it takes to get become here and really -- oh man it's been amazing. how many people have come and you know just cleaning. i took pictures just because it's like a positive feeling to see everybody back together and so dedicated to this place. >> reporter: they're leaving alone

j.c. hayward. the faa is investigating a frightening incident near national airport.wo planes taking off headed right towards a plane which was actually coming in to land. this happened tuesday afternoon. delia goncalves has more. >> reporter: confusion in the air traffic control center and a near collision midair. >> i just -- prayed to god that nothing happens to me. >> reporter: according to the federal aviation administration, two outgoing u.s. airway commuter planes came dangerously close to a landing jet liner tuesday afternoon. the first departing plane within a mile and seconds of the arriving plane. the second departing plane, a mile behind. >> to be safe. >> right. >> and the kind of mistakes that you would make from i understand from the news is unacceptable. >> reporter: the faa is trying to determine what exactly went wrong. but we know so far is that air traffic controllers were busy redirecting flights following a shift in wind direction. apparently there was some coin of miscommunication -- kind of miscommunication that could have been catastrophic had
