i am here with jack davis, a professor of history at the university of florida. before the book that we're going to talk about, he wrote a book on marjorie stoneman douglas published in 2009. he grew up on the gulf coast that he now writes so well about. he's currently writing a book wh that we're looking forward to, the "the gulf" that we're talking about here won the kirkus prize but it also won the 2018 pulitzer prize. and there's only one book every year that goes to and that was him. the new york times called it sprightly and sweeping. the wall street journal calls it lyrical, inspiring, a chilling story of the american see and in one review said it's an important environmental history that brings crucial attention to earth's 10th largest body of water, one of the planets most diverse ecosystems. so when you embarked on this, this book here, when you embarked on this, what were you trying to write? what was the book you thought needed to be written? >> let me say also thank you for showing up on this rainy day. i don't know if i come out so i very much appre
