jack was a great guy. he had one rule in life and i know that he always followed it, and it was do not drink while you're sleeping. jack followed that rule, i mean, religiously. but jack has a very interesting history and i go into it a little in the book, tracked him down after this pony express days. what amazed me but jack slade is jack helped set up the pony express line, and jack was sent to an area where they had this problem horses were disappearing. well, they would buy ten of them, $300 a pop and you're losing ten horses. that's quite an investment. so jack went there to straighten it out, and jack found -- jack discovered that for some reason, all the horses that had the pony brand were showing up at the stationmaster's personal ranch but he was saying they weren't ponies -- at any time belong to the company. well that's correct had a discussion and to kind of cut things shorts, just say that jack used the man for a target practice. he also just to make sure that everybody get the message, he lopped off the fellow's ear and posted it on a fence post. be amazed -- it's amaze bug that horse thievery dropped to zero right after that. the ron i bring that up is that two years ago in researching the book, i was especially in the area where this alleged to have taken place, and there's a monument, a me
