we've been following all of this with the help of our good friend, criminal jack jacobs, of course, medalf honor recipient. colonel jack, first of all, the president going there now and making this speech. of course, it was a big thank you, but the timing, what's that about? >> well, it's on the heels of the nato summit, at a time when there's a great deal of consternation inside europe about what's happening to europe, and ultimately, to nato with brexit on the one hand, russian aggression, which the president mentioned, on the other, and a concern that the united states is not necessarily going to be there when the europeans need them. and we've done a number of things, including this speech, to generate more enthusiasm among our nato allies. among other things, nato is moving troops into the baltic countries. and maybe more significantly, the united states is adding to its forces in eastern europe, and in particular, in poland, right on the russian border. these are things to try to dissuade putin from more aggressive action. we know that putin in many respects does a lot of things for

for additional perspective, we're joined by medal of honor recipient and retired army colonel, jack jacobs. what's your take on this? >> this has been building for quite some time. erdogan has been a very difficult ally. when we wanted to fly planes out of the air base in order to attack targetsn iraq, and syria, he refused and it wasn't after it had to be after a while before he relented and it's only recently. he's for the last three or four years, has been turning the largely ceremonial post of president into something of a single man rule. working very hard to change the constitution. has fired and in some cases, jailed senior officers including generals, who disagrees with him. there have been restrictions on the press. and perhaps most importantly is that he is at odds philosophically with the military, which is effectively a secular organization representing a secular country. all created by at turktatur, and he continues to appeal to the more conservative and rural elements inside turkey. further more, the military has been upset with ergogan accusing him of using the kurds effecti

. >> let me bring in msnbc military analyst and medal of honor recipient colonel jack jacobs. i was so struck hearing you make comparisons to vietnam. you were in vietnam, my father also in the army. to hear someone like yourself paint this picture was very intriguing. what are your thoughts on this announcement and 15 years later where we are? >> from 1964 and before, our objective there was to train the vietnamese army. lots of special forces there and lots of advisers, an increasing number of both until '64, '65, yes decided it wasn't going anywhere, we weren't training them fast enough. and we had to send conventional troops chase after the vietcong and eliminate them from the country. you know where that went. ten years later we were still there. training mission didn't do anything. training is extremely difficult, takes a long, long time. while it's very difficult to make real close comparisons, the security situation now in afghanistan looks pretty much like it did in 1964 and before in vietnam where the effort was to send lots of trainers there so we could train indige

we'll be there a long, long time i believe. >> jack jacobs, thank you for that.ourtney kuby standing by at the pentagon. courtney, in that building over the years they received word that 2,215 of our very best have been lost by that conflict. while it's hard to sum up the feeling or take a poll of such a fast complex there, how do you think this will go over in the pentagon and elsewhere? >> i think people will primarily be pleased. there were several things that have forecasted this announcement in the past several weeks. last month we had this pretty unprecedented open letter to the president written by several retired generals including general john campbell who just left at the head of the war in afghan stop, general petraeus, general john allen, numerous former centcom and former afghanistan commanders wrote an open letter to the president begging him essentially to keep 10,000 u.s. troops in there to maintain the presence, maintain the security they've been able to help the afghans stable. the second thing, last year, 2015, we saw a dramatic uptick in viole

let's bring in our military analyst colonel jack jacobs and white house correspondent, great to have both of you this morning to shed light on this situation. i want to start with you because larry just brought up the question of nato and what nato's involvement should be in the situation. she believes nato needs to be more involved do you share that view? and when do you think that happens? >> we'll start with you. >> you can't conduct any kind of military operation unless you know what the objective is. using military force is useful if it's directed at something. there is no agreement on what it is on what the military force could do in this situation and syria or iraq or any other place is not at the end of the day going to get what the united states needs in order to protect itself. so the use of military force alone is insufficient. >> president holland has extended the state of emergency in france and it had already been under a state of emergency after previous attacks. what does that do for the country and for this fight against terrorism that has already been on high alert
