. >>> joining me right now for more analysis, colonel jack jacobs, u.s. army retired medal of honor recipient and msnbc military analyst. we just heard there the pentagon spokesman say, "i don't want to speculate on timing but we're all watching this as you are." what are you making of the speed at which all of this is happening? >> well, there are a couple of reasons why this may have happened with such great speed. the first to keep in mind is that there are reliable reports that the afghan forces were very short of the most important supplies. ammunition, food, and water. and so, particularly on outfit posts closest to its borders, in areas that fell first to the taliban and set up an opportunity for the taliban to develop some momentum, these were real problems and caused the forces to flee. the second thing is the perception generally that there is nothing but corruption in the country and that extends through the chain of command in the military. this has been an endemic problem for a long time. and the third independent variable and perhaps the one

i'm also joined by jack jacobs. an msnbc military analyst. mike, let me start with you an unknown number of casualties. we know president biden is monitoring the situation right now. what more do we know? >> we have the first indication of how they are changing things in terms of the schedule. the briefing scheduled for this morning has been postponed. the president as he has every day this week has had a standing meeting to discuss the latest developments. he was in the situation room when this explosion was first reported. he remains in the situation room as we understand from white house officials to be monitoring the latest developments. this is obviously a significant set back to what has been the escalating, accelerating efforts on the part of this administration to evacuate as many americans, as many afghan partners as possible. quickly ahead of that august 31st deadline. the president asked him team to provide contingency planning. we also know the team had been closely monitoring that potential terrorist threat. all indications now t

joining me now, a senior advisor to the senior respect in the obama state department and colonel jack jacobs vietnam war has been seen as a defeat of america by a militia, put a stain on american conscious, a knock on global standing. is afghanistan going to play a similar role? does it compare to vietnam in your view? >> very well, actually. when you're at the bottom of the military food chain, you have to believe in the mission. you have to be in your leaders and you have to believe in each other and what happened in vietnam is that even after a decade, it was corruption, poor leadership and the united states decided it was going to leave, which convinced the rank and file at the bottom of the food chain that they were going to be on their own. what surprised me in vietnam, i was one of the last combat troops to leave in 1973. what was surprising is that the vietnamese army lasted as long as it did, until 1975. no such expectations here. don't forget that three presidents in a row here said we were leaving. continuous and pervasive and endemic corruption in the afghan army. lack of supplie
