joining us now by phone is msnbc military analyst colonel jack jacobs colonel jack your reaction to news tonight that the united states has performed limited strikes in syria against the iranian revolutionary guard corps. >> well, it's not surprising that iran has done what it's done. it tries as much as possible to use proxies, but its fingerprints are on absolutely every attack on american and allied interests in the region. and so, at some juncture, they would expect that the united states would strike. we have struck before in syria and other places as a result of attacks on american interests. it depends on whether or not iran wants to take it further. the likelihood is that they will not. they will continue to use proxies, make small scale attacks, and as we heard, in the event that there is a death, an american death, as a result of an attack by iran or in iran proxy, then we can expect an escalation and we already have plans to attack a specific targets among iranian interests in order to prevent that sort of thing from happening again. >> colonel, is there any way for this not t

let me bring back in msnbc military analyst colonel jack jacobs.nd colonel jack, after re-setting the scene, especially for those who are just tuning in, will iran view these with limited, quote unquote, self-defense strikes as a discreet action by the united states or will they view it as the united states been in lead with israel in israel's war against hamas. >> it's an interesting question, because in the past, they almost always perceived it as discrete. but this is a totally different situation altogether, because what's happened in israel on october 7th, and of course, the world of possibilities as expanded in the region. iran is always looking to push the envelope. they've always done it, and they will continue to do it. and as a result, we can expect that they might expand their opportunity to attack americans and allied interests in the region. their perception, probably, at the moment, given the situation in the region, is no longer that it's discreet. it's part of a larger strategic initiative on their part to insert themselves in the r

army colonel, jack jacobs, he's an msnbc military analyst. medal of honor recipient. onel jacobs, thank you so much for being with us. your assessment of what we've seen today, and the conversations likely happening among members of the israeli military today? >> well, the first thing, shocked that nobody saw coming. not israel and not the united states. both of us have really potent intelligence gathering capabilities. and intelligence production capabilities. and it's astonishing that nobody knew that this was coming. especially in view of the fact that masses of troops can be detected quite easily assembling of missiles can be observed in a very small space, which is gaza. the first lesson here is that both the united states and israel have to do a much better job of intelligence and there's something else that's astonishing to. hamas reaching the barriers between gaza and israel. with great ease and not under fire so. it's clear that the hamas figured out exactly which areas were not there was no overwatch and no support and therefore could preach those obstacles q

let's bring in colonel jack jacobs.alyst, as well as a matter of honor recipient. what sort of the hostages taken from israel to gaza. how does that affect the military options for israel? and must years they condensed the options that they have, right? israelis, when you heard that report five years were held -- this is the biden americans place on citizens and hostages. they don't want to lose a one on military activity. >> these rescue operations are extremely difficult. most of them fail. one has to conclude that getting the got hostages back is a function of exchange. there is a congress to be had, hostages are being held inside israel. but the reports are that those hamas units that hold them hostage are difficult to envision how they're released. it's absolutely correct that the greatest likelihood is for bargaining chips. >> particularly, it makes life extremely difficult for those to make a decision to bomb those areas inside gaza. it's hamas headquarter, hamas says it is a hostage there. an extremely difficult

i want to bring in retired army colonel jack jacobs, recipient of the congress medal of honor and an msnbc military analyst. colonel, what's your assessment of where this stands right now? >> well, it's fully capable of exploding into something that nobody wants to see, not us, not anybody in the region. it's a very dangerous neighborhood, always has been, but the united states has got interests in the region, is desperate to make sure that yes are not involved and others are not involved. but at the end of the day, the countries in the region, particularly egypt and the other arab countries are part of the solution to the problem in the region and also part of the solution to keeping things quieter than they are now, and maybe finding a solution before there is an extension of the war to other areas. you know, the united states is desperately worried that hezbollah will enter, but you can take some solace in understanding that iran does not necessarily want to use its major lever, its major tool in the region and commit it to some kind of conflict in which it will get destroyed. >>

let's bring in clint watts along with retired army colonel jack jacobs and bloomberg opinion columnistuche. clint, if you will, will you give us a bigger picture of what's happening in this region right now and what we know is happening today as far as this battle? >> yeah, so right where ellison was, right here around ashkelon, that's one of the places where we've still seen a lot of contact over the last 24 hours, so you've seen some fighting there. there was reports of three hamas militants being killed there. it's not surprising that there's some machine gunfire there because here is the border, and that's erez crossing. that's one of the crossings between israel and gaza. separately over the last 24 hours, the key zone that the israelis have moved back into and taken over is here re'im, that's where that music festival, there's another kibbutz here and here where all of the israeli soldiers are going into finding atrocities, mass casualty incidents, killing of women, children, it is a stark scene. so when you look back at what's going on now, i think everyone's looking to see as t

i want to turn out to colonel jack jacobs.recipient an msnbc military analyst. so colonel, first let's get your reaction to matt's reporting there, and i had retired general barry mccaffrey on last hour. he said he's operating on the assumption that hezbollah at some point will attack and be drawn into this war or draw itself and. what are your thoughts? >> yeah, i think general mccaffrey is absolutely correct. at some juncture, hezbollah is going to get involved whether makes an incursion or tries to make an incursion deeper into israel or just fights on the border as it has before. it is going to make life a little bit more complicated for the israeli defense force, who has to make sure that it has deployed sufficient forces up north in order to take care of hezbollah while still maintaining the force that it requires in order to clear hamas from gaza north of the waddy. something else has to be kept in mind here too. every military operation no matter how instructive, and used to keep reserves ready to do one of two things.

joining us now is colonel jack jacobs, u.s. hanks. >> colonel, we had discussions earlier that in one way or another or another we might actually see even more american involvement eventually, whether it's releasing hostages. you would know better. how does that look. we have the aircraft carrier, we havejets. one doesn't expect to see american airplanes conducting strikes on gaza or anyplace else unless there are attacks directly on american assets. it's there principally as a show of force. you raise an interesting case on the hostages, is doing something about gets the hostages back. now, securing hostages is an extremely difficult task, even at the best of times. they're usually very narrowly focused, maybe one site, two sites at the same time, rarely ever more and not in multiple locations like they are now. so we're still inside israel apparently, surrounded by idf. it would appear the largest number of hostages have been taken in gaza in multiple locations. it takes practice on specific objective areas in order to effect
