general jack keane, a retired four-star general and former chief of staff at the army. he is also a fox news military analyst. sir, you were at the pentagon, helping advise the general as he began the war in iran. i'm sorry, in iraq. let's not get ahead of ourselves. so, tell us. ten years later, in your view, what did we learn? >> going back to that initial time, i think first and foremost we do not proceed that saddam hussein had a choice and i would be to surrender his regime and come back and fight us using unconventional tactics. we never consider that as an option. we had a failed military strategy for three years and we never understood that, despite the fact that we had a 10 year similar war in vietnam. we did just recently bolster the security forces. we certainly did not do that. jon: winning the battle militarily was relatively easy the easy part. we remember the tanks surrounding baghdad while the official spokesman says they are not anywhere close. >> we did anticipate that an insurgency would rise. president bush had the courage to change that strategy in

joining me is the former vice chief of staff from the army, jack keane.eneral, good morning. >> good morning, jamie, my big concern is dual concern -- one, the jobs that defense contractors are giving, but more, the care of our returning troops. do you agree that some cuts might have been necessary to make the army more efficient? >> well, i think what the viewers have to understand is the defense department is absorbing a $487 billion cut that was put in place last year and that came on the heels of a number of efficiency cuts that secretary gates made before he left. i think the cuts last year had too much risk in it for ground forces. can you find waste in a department as large as the pentagon? of course, you can. but these cuts we're talking about here in time would be very serious and would fundamentally change the military we have. >> jamie: i got an interesting email yesterday, general, from the wife of a lieutenant general, active service who, said our military will step up to the challenge, that they will get the job done, particularly in afghani

general jack keane is a former vice chief of staff of the army. i feel like i begin every north korean interview with you with the same question, what is north korea up to here? what are they doing? >> well, we've been conducting exercises with the south koreans for years, so it's not so much the exercise, it's the fact that he's faced since february 12th when he detonated his third nuclear weapon -- jenna: you're talking about kim jong un, the new leaderrer. >> yeah. he's faced condemnation, and the united states is leading an effort in the u.n. national security council to increase the economic sanctions. china and russia appear to go along with it. they're going to actually view the text today, jenna, to see if they can live with it. that's what's really bothering him, because he knows he's going to lose in this. of. jenna: well, he said he was going to launch a rocket, test a nuclear weapon, and he did that. do you think this is a credible threat that if the drills continue, he's going to do something? what that is, we may not know. >> if he h

joining me retired four-star general jack keane.mer vice chief of staff of the army and a fox news military analyst. general keane, let's start with the news of the prison. the prison is being handed over to the afghans. roughly 3 to 4,000 prisoners are there. who are these prisoners and what does this move mean? >> well, this is something that has been negotiated now for almost a year. obviously we knew that we would eventually turn over all of our prisons to, to afghan control and it makes sense to do that but our concern was that the afghans have a tendency to release detainees prematurely. we find ourselves having to fight the same leaders and same fighters again. there is nothing more demoralizing to our troops obviously than that. this concern was expressed time and tile again because in the bagram prison, we have, we have many insurgent leaders we held for some time and they are key to the insurgency. we certainly do not want them released and we do not want them back on the ground fighting us or fighting the afghans. that is

general jack keane is a retired four-star general and former vice chief of staff of the army.e safe, general? >> well, there is certainly a growing threat from north korea. we know they have nuclear weapons. they are trying to miniature rise them to fix them to a missile and they've developed missile technology which they just tested back in december that is attempting to reach the west coast of the united states, obviously to include alaskan hawaii. that's where they are heading. we have to take that threat seriously. jenna: these intercept ters that we understand are going back into place, or they are being placed in alaskan california, how good are they? >> well, our missile defense technology is the best in the world. you saw a display of that to some degree with the attack on the israelis, because the technology they have and what we have is very close. so we do have the capacity to knock those missiles down to be sure, and certainly thickening that defense land base, but we are also thickening the maritime and sea base defense as well. jenna: we've heard so many threats

general jack keane, retired four-star general, former vice chief of staff for the army, fox news militarynalyst, all that and more. general, good to see you and good morning. >> good morning, jamie. jamie: first i want to ask, is this a situation or are you completely convinced it is not and we're training rebels and we don't know who they are? >> i suspect we know who they are. i do believe the open sources that are reporting that the central intelligence agency has organized a training effort. i don't know if they are special-ops or actually involved in that or not. it is likely they probably would be. i think this is largely a good effort. i suspect they're training leaders and so who can go back and pass that training on, you know to their troops. i think it is not a large-scale effort. it is not something in of itself would be decisive but certainly it is helpful. jamie: they're sending special-ops whether cia or military to jordan by twoe to t. we're putting a lot of resources in here and we're facing some serious budget cuts through sequestration. next week i will visit the pentago

general jack keane is also with us, retired four stare aem, former vice chief of staff for the army and a fox news analyst. gentlemen, we showed some military from the individual proto the military drills sometimes called war games. why do we do these drills with south korea? >> we have to be prepared for any aggression north korea may use on the south and militaries have to practice. if you have got two different countries here with different armies, different procedures, they have to practice together to be good at it because they would be literally fighting together. jenna, we've been doing these exercises for almost 60 years. this isn't something new that the degree of bell coasty and sabre rattling on this particular exercise by the nor core reians, the volume is a little different -- north koreans. jenna: i want to set the stage what is going on in the southern peninsula in this country. michael, it happens every year. the associated press said north korea's words or rhetoric are more war-like than normal. what makes their comments different? >> jenna, north korea is very unpredic
