joining us now vice-chief and four star general jack keane. >> thank you. >> let me start by asking yourssessment, what kind of threat was north korea pose specifically to the united states, if any? >> well, i don't think they pose a direct threat to the united states. the missiles that they've advertised to be able to reach the united states, most analystses don't believe that they can. they certainly pose a very serious threat to south korea and we do have 28,000 troops there, and japan is not very far away. the tension that you mention is part of a pattern that's been going on in north korea for 40 years for them to get attention. i mean, i think what's got everybody concerned this time is it is so much more strident than what it has in the past in terms of threatening nuclear war and what we have here is a strong-- is a new leader who is trying to prove that he's a strong, capable leader, number one to his people and these things have always had domestic consumption as priority one. the second thing, i think he's sending a loud message to the south korean new department of t the-- go

retired general jack keane and syndicated columnist charles krauthammer., charles, you have been watching all of this. thoughts on the day and what you've heard? >> well, i think all of us don't want to pre-judge but i think the real question is the motive. and right now the evidence very strongly points so self-radicalized young men acting in the name of jihad. two kind of chechen terrorism. there is nationalist and religious. nationalists ones who are in chechnya fighting against the russians in a long, drawn out war twice suppressioned by russia and in response to the brutality of the russians have launched some of the most grizzly terrorist attacks of our time the one on the theater in moscow and the one on the school. there is also a second kind of chechen. not nationalists, but the one you find in afghanistan and iraq and some are reported in syriaened at bawl balkans. if you are a nationalist, there is no reason you would be killing americans. if you are a jihadist then americans are the enemy. >> bret: leon that jihadist tie goes back a number of y
