joining me now fox news strategic analyst general jack keane good to see you, general. >> good to see's your sense? we have known for days there is some -- we don't have specifics but some kind of threat from iran in terms of either targeting u.s. interest, u.s. troops abroad, tell us about the significance of the secretary of state going to iraq. >> yeah, well a couple things going on here. certainly going to iraq, this is part of the united states overall strategy deter anything from happening on behalf of the iranians. secondly, listen, we got 5200 troops in iraq. they have a common border with iran. last year the iranian train the iraqi she a militia rocketed our consulate in gaza they shut it down. they rocketed our embassy last year as well. they have tens of thousands of popular mobilization forces or iraqi-she a militia trained by iranians in iraq. so clearly this is a place to approximate danger for us. and i think what happens here is the secretary of state wants to, one, reassure our own troops, two, get some feedback from them in terms of what they sees a happening and als

retired four star general jack keane chairman of the institute study of war and general great to have and good morning to you. the b-52 news broke last hour. tie the pieces together between iran, russia, north korea with your strategic mind. what is happening out there? >> well, clearly when it comes to the middle east the iranians and russians have a political and military alliance. that was formed around russian military intervention into syria which the iranians actually motivated the russians to do asking putin twice during 2014 to do that. it has given pause to the united states and allies in the region stitching together that alliance. the iranians have used the proxies in the region to dominate and control the middle east which is their ultimate objective. they've had some real success at this. that's why the jcpoa, while it was a deal stitched around nuclear issues, when that deal was formed the iranians insisted that their behavior in the region would not be a condition for making the deal. what has happened? they've taken control of lebanon, a civil war going on in syria tha

general jack keane, good morning to you and a memorial day weekend as well. nice to see you. could they both be right? john bolton said over the weekend. the u.n. security council resolution prohibits the launch of any ballistic missiles and north korea has violated the restlation. bolton says they're wrong for doing it. the president says he is not bothered by it. what do you think, general? >> it is a violation of u.n. resolution. i agree with prime minister abe who president trump has been visiting. he has a lot of concern about it because japan is in range of those missiles. i also agree with the president this is a negotiating employ by kim jong-un. he started it weeks ago, bill, when he fired this anti-tank missile. a new missile and he has been firing rockets and missiles with increasing range every week for weeks. why is he doing that? he came out of the hanoi summit with no sanction relief, which was his objective of the summit. and he has been trying to gain leverage ever since. he wants a summit again with president trump. that's what's really going on here. intere

general jack keane chairman of the institute for the study of war and strategic analyst.e to see you. are we sending more forces to the middle east and should we? >> certainly the commanders can make that assessment. the initial build-up of our forces and really returning forces that we had already pulled out of there carrier strike group, patriot missiles and additional force, the bombers themselves, that was about deterrents. making certain that the iranians really get the message that based on intelligence we thought they were going to have an unprovoked attack on our forces. this is about a response if they do. and i think what we're probably looking at increased offensive missile capability to be able to conduct cruise missiles from submarines and surface ships and also likely some additional missile defense capability protect our facilities. we have facilities throughout the middle east. >> bill: is that a message, a show of force. you describe it as a deterrent. offensive or defensive. >> it's largely defensive in the sense that we want to protect our facilities an

general jack keane brought up the fact you could escort military aid in.rian risk. the activities, the u.s. effort has been focused on diplomatic and economic efforts. as you understand, and i think been made perfectly clear by the president, all options are on the table. brian: north korea set up rockets. there have been a couple launchings over the last two weeks. the president had a moderate response through twitter and interviews. what's yours? >> the strategy with north korea hasn't changed of the it is a diplomatic one. but it is about full denuclearization. my job is to make sure that we're prepared in the event of diplomacy fails. that is my focus with the military. there is no change to our force posture. our force preparation and our readiness. brian: coincidence, they look like russian rockets? coincidence, they had a meeting kim jong-un and vladmir putin a couple weeks ago. is it a coincidence? >> i will leave that for to you decide. brian: when you look at what this president wants to do with trade in china, some would say that's not your lane

general jack keane is with us now. general, i'm not sure what the president meant by that.of force. what do you say? >> i think for the time-being they're still trying to work on a peaceful transition. obviously the administration thought they were pretty close to that as ambassador bolton told us a couple days ago on international television when he said three key actors were willing to turn against maduro and changed their mind and called them out on tv. quite remarkable. never seen anything quite like that. here i think the options that the president has in front of him. not suggesting i know, i don't ask questions like that. i'm just speculating based on my own experience. he can bring some u.s. forces, stage them in colombia, and, with the implication obviously that they're going to be used inside of venezuela. that may in of itself change the minds of some of their leaders who they want to support. number two, he can actually move into venezuela with some of our forces but with a coalition of forces, particularly colombia and brazil, to provide humanitarian relief. it

persian gulf, particularly around the strait of hormuz, something our strategic analysts and general jack keane, very closely. general, it is amazing that the oil markets are absorbing this without getting frantic about this but this is getting to be scary stuff. what do you think? >> well, clearly the united states is reacting to some kind of intelligence that has some specificity to it in terms of the iranian threat likely to interfere with u.s. forces at facilities or transiting through the persian gulf and straits of hormuz, maritime shipping, you know, we call those black holes and also gray hulls, u.s. navy ships themselves. so as a result of that, we have a carrier strike group going to the middle east, we have bombers returning to the middle east where they were once before, and patriot missiles that are air defense missiles also returning to the middle east. i think all of that is sending a clear message to iran to try to deter them from taking any serious action, because they are telling the iranians even if you use your proxies as you have done in the past, we will respond against yo
