general jack keane is joining us in moments. first to arkansas senator tom cotton who completed a tour in afghanistan in the u.s. army. senator, a couple of things that stood out to me was one was sort of the phrasing that general milley said. he said the president made the decision on april 14 that we were going to leave afghanistan. so basically that's when they got their marching order and had to dial down the number of people at their disposal. twice we heard we don't have enough people essentially. we heard that we didn't have enough people to keep bagram air force base and the embassy safe. so we had to make a choice. the choice at that point was to go with the embassy. so they clearly said based on the prescriptive from the white house, they didn't have enough to do both. then we heard from general austin when it comes to going outside the airport, we could do that. we have the capability to go out and help lift people to safety in the airport but our primary objective is to defend the airport and we only have enough peop

your thoughts on what jack keane said? >> dan: general keane is absolutely right. the summer fighting season is now. it would've made great sense to plan our withdrawal during the winter. nothing says a lack of operational planning like having to send 3,000 troops to go protect our people at the embassy. the administration i think wouldn't have liked the optics of doing that but they're being forced to do it. let me emphasize that the mission of the intelligence community and the department of defense has changed. it can detect and preempt threats before they are visited on our shores and protect our people in that region and beyond. it just got a whole lot harder. we know the one lesson from 9/11 is that when you give the taliban ungoverned space, they will allow al qaeda to homestead there and al qaeda will plot and plan against us. we're going to have a lot more difficulty in detecting those threats and preempting them without a finish capability on the ground in afghanistan. >> harris: wow. we took the beach and turned it into a scorpions nest. let's pray for p

general jack keane, retired four star u.s. army general and fox news senior strategic analyst and chair of the institute for the study of war is in focus. general, thank you for joining me with your expertise. you heard the president. we played clips from him in recent past. he says the mission has not failed yet. is that true? >> well, it's failing right before our eyes. what has happened here is the president has made some serious miscalculations where he hasn't fully appreciated the consequences of his decision in april when he announced a withdrawal. what we're seeing is an ill-conceived hastey withdrawal that's turned into an embarrassing retreat. and that's the simple fact of it. it's not something that president biden intended to happen but the reality is simply this. when we announced that withdrawal, that meant that the united states military had to close seven military bases and remove the resources at those bases and get it all done by 31 august. that left absolutely no time and no resources to assist the afghan sec

paul: continuing now with general jack keane.general, let's look beyond august 31 and what are those americans who are left behind -- and there are quite a number, and, we don't know how many, but there are quite a number -- and afghans. how are they going to get out? are they left to fend for themselves or head for the border in. >> yeah, well, first of all, this is something that we clearly could have avoided. this is an arbitrary date that the president established for what became a hasty and then an emergency withdrawal. this is something we have imposed on ourselves. and not establishing with the taliban a declaration that a we're going to stay for as long as it takes to get 'em out has put us in this position of actually giving the taliban tear first legitimacy as the new government in charge of afghanistan by partnering with them to help get americans out after we leave. and, certainly, the kind of trust that has to be very skeptical here in working with them. but we, we had control of this if we just stood up and told tal

here is general jack keane, chairman of the institute for the study of war. good to see you. we mentioned general david petraeus in his op-ed. he said here "the rest of the world will see we're not supporting democracy or maintaining the values that we promote around the world. he means human rights. women rights, things that the taliban he thinks would reimplement this medieval islamic republic. your thoughts on what the general said. >> well, certainly have great respect for general petraeus. i did assessments for him in iraq and also in afghanistan over the number of years. so i'm pretty familiar with his thought process. what we have, we have a 20-year ally here that has been side by side with us in the war against radical islam and making certain that al-quaida and isis does not reemerge in afghanistan. we're literally walking away from them. they helped to put together a constitutional democracy, sort of copying what we were doing. we weren't there to establish a democratic state. we were to deal with the al-quaida and isis and taliban supporting them.
