. >> i'm joined by colonel jack jacobs, msnbc military analyst. lynnwell joining us, washington bureau chief for "the chicago sun-times." colonel, i'll start with you right now. what did you think of the secretary of defense's comments there? >> it's one thing to say just because they're atd viersz they're not going to be involved in combat. i was an adviser twice in vietnam and was in plenty of combat. whether or not the advisers are in combat is wholly a function of what the iraqis do. if they get ambushed, if they're in attacks, our guys with them will be involved as well. >> so advisers on the ground can quickly change roles and become combat related. they are trained as such. >> not only are they trained as such, but they're embedded just like reporters are, they're embedded in the units. if they're going to be giving advice to their counterparts, the commanders of the iraqi units, and they're going to be controlling the air strikes, which they are going to be doing, they're going to be in confrontation with isis forces and they will be shot at. >
