haslinda: what do you think of jack ma? max: fascinating. haslinda: yeah. why is that?ink it is a few things. clearly, his vision has been unbelievable. i think his determination and the hunger for more is very inspiring. it is very incredible to see how his vision just doesn't stop here. i mean, he just, you know, seized the strategy for alibaba to expand globally and if we can play a small part is very exciting. haslinda: do you see lazada morphing? because of alibaba's involvement? do you see the model changing? max: i think there will be things which will change because we learn from what they do. we have the luck of not making some of the mistakes may made in -- mistakes they made in the past, but in the end, let's not kid ourselves. what we're doing is not rocket science. we're connecting sellers and buyers. there is lots of different formats in which that can happen. our job is to make the customer happy and the seller happy and have the platform be in between. so, i think it is less about sudden rush transformational changes, but more about improvements. do i th

emily: we traveled to beijing a couple of years ago to speak with jack ma.as some concern around that time that alibaba might be a lot of hype. what has changed when it comes to investor sentiment? >> investor sentiment has come almost a full 360 degrees over the last few years. late last year, it was foot on the u.s. notorious list of counterfeit goods. bear sentiment spiked over the last few years. there was the sec investigation and outspoken words from prominent short-sellers saying the whole thing was a house of cards. since then, alibaba has consistently beat earnings and shown impressive topline and bottom-line growth. it has come down hard on counterfeiters taking down a lot of fake websites as well as working with law enforcement to deal with that. there is some bearish overhang. the sec investigation is still ongoing. a lot of investors and analysts admit the financial disclosures are rather opaque. the impressive and compelling numbers are clearly asking them to overlook it. emily: where do you see the most potential, bob? they are tied to their r

we have seen jack ma want to connect more with brick-and-mortar, that industry and bringing the retailingne.ta would that be enough to propel earnings going forward? elinor: a lot of people worry , alreadyna e-commerce too high, 50% retail sales, well above the rest of the world just behind korea. and it is below 20% this year. and when you look at the data, that surprised everyone. china online sales grew accelerated 32%, 26% year on year. you look at this it is growing 26%. a very strong number. china consumption and second, the product premium line. third is because he grocery -- egrocery, and also e-commerce. the market is ready in china versus the rest of the world. betty: i want to talk about tencent, which has a huge gaining base. some are saying, how much can they really grow? this shows how much gaming revenue has propelled the stock. this is 1265. you can see that tencent with the white line here finally getting to the consensus target price among analysts. you could see the stock was dropped after that point. about howome concerns much more can they get out of gaming, and what

jack ma and his executives are betting on this type of strategy to drive growth in the future.ly: how do you compare what alibaba is doing here with these stores, whichet double as warehouses for orders. how do you compare to what they are doing with amazon? >> e-commerce is roughly 15%. that penetration rate is growing by 1% year on year. for alibaba to grow 3% on the -- to continue to grow at 15% a year they need to figure out how , to grow the other 85% of spending. they are doing that by combining off-line with online. you look at what has happened in japan in retail the last 20 years. you go to tokyo, you go to osaka. you see the high-speed rails and subway stations. you land in tokyo and can check in your luggage at the airport. it will get sent to your hotel. china has learned from that and applied that to e-commerce. interestingd it alibaba is taking on grocery the same time amazon is in the united states. >> amazon did it after alibaba. emily: how do their efforts compare? >> if you look at the type of china,payment market in in 2016 it fell $790 billion. that is 11 ti
