and delaware governor jack markell, who can update us on what's happening in his state.morning, governor. nice to talk to you. why don't you walk me through what your biggest concerns are for your residents? >> the biggest concerns, the rain, and the winds together, make driving conditions absolutely miserable. so we've put in a driving restriction today. also, concerns because the storm is so long-lasting we're concerned that people could be without power for some period of time. >> are you finding that people are actually heeding the evacuation orders? or i should say heeding the warnings? >> i -- and those -- well there were evacuation orders that ended at 8:00 last night for some of our coastal areas and we appreciate those who did. those who did not, we're afraid may find themselves cut off. but, there's not much we can do about that now. the main thing now is for people to realize, there are significant driving restrictions in place. and one of the reasons we did that is conditions are going to get worse and worse. we didn't want people to go to work today and then

jack markell, obama campaign supporter. nice to have you with us this morning.i'm going to throw up on the screen -- >> good morning. >> -- good morning to you. this new poll comes to us from our friends at politico. george washington university as well. battleground states, of the ten battleground states which are colorado, oregon, ohio, nevada, michigan, wisconsin, you have mitt romney leading at 50%. president obama at 48%. when you see a poll like that how much bad news is that for you? >> i've been in two of those states in the last ten days. i was in ohio about ten days ago. i was in florida yesterday. i can tell you the enthusiasm on the part of the obama people was incredible. and the ground game was just really, really impressive. in ohio i visited a couple college campuses. these young students doing an amazing job registering people to vote. getting people to vote early. yesterday in florida at a couple field offices, at a house party, people raring to go. literally dozens and dozens and dozens at these aucoffices maki phone calls, going on campus. >>

let's get to governor jack markell. brian todd was mentioning him. he's joining us now.. brian was saying that the pouter outages are your big concern. what can you tell us about that? and really what people want to know, as you know, is when will it be back on? >> well, as brian mentioned, at this point, about 44,000 homes or businesses without power. it has been a significant storm, serious flooding and the like. but we are as he mentioned the big concern was how long it would take for the utility crews to get out there. back and forth and they've got a lot of people here, they're ready to go as soon as weather conditions make that possible. i said even though the weather model didn't have us squarely in the center of the path we appeared to have escaped some of the worst consequences of this storm. although we have a lot of places flooded out and the power issues. >> any idea, i'm looking at pictures now which we really saw yesterday afternoon of the rush of water coming in to some of the streets, and into frankly some of the businesses. is anyone giving you a number

governor jack markell, thank you for joining us. tonight the presidential campaign with just eight days left sits at a stand still with both president obama and governor romney canceling their events for tonight and tomorrow night. here to answer some of the political questions this storm brings to us is john nickel, washington correspondent for the nation. the president of the united states has a big job, especially when you have fema working for you. he has all the powers of incumbency and all the powers to display how good an executive he is. romney, on the sidelines, the breaks of the game. >> it puts an awful lot on hold. people probably could never have imagined that a storm on the east coast of the united states would be canceling events in wisconsin and ohio, scrambling events just this afternoon in davenport, iowa. the fact of the matter is over the next two days barack obama and mitt romney and also paul ryan have canceled events as far away as colorado. not just because of concerns about the storm surge, but also because

joining me by phone is the delaware governor jack markell chairman of the governor's association and in response to delaware's response to the storm. what is your concern about people who are not leaving when told? >> well our biggest concern at the moment is the likely loss of power. my guess is people will be out of power for a week to ten days or longer. significant flooding down at the beach, you heard your reporter from the rehoboth beach area and seeing significant flooding there. we did a mandatory evacuation. people were to get out by last night. if they're still there, you know, we -- they could be cut off and can't guarantee first responders will get to them. >> i know we checked with bo biden's office because he was called up in the national guard, he was a major in the national guard, be had active duty in iraq left the campaign in anticipation of this on saturday as a main surrogate, also campaigning with his dad and now he has been called up. how many have been activated in the national guard? >> 300 people so far. we may end up doubling that. we've got a terrific natio

. >>> joining us from delaware is governor jack markell.g the updates on the state website for delaware. at this time explain where things stand in the state of emergency. i know you added not a long time ago about businesses shutting down. >> thanks for having me. yesterday we announced mandatory evacuations for people along our coast. we laid it out in great detail. those people should be gone by 8:00 tonight. businesses and those areas need to be closed by 6:00 tonight. we've got a lot of first responders across the state working cooperatively. as your report just now said, people have to take responsibility. otherwise they put themselves and others in harm's way. >> as you're saying that we're watching a boogie border on the beach heading out to the waves right now. >> if people are going to do stupid things, that's their problem. the fact is, people stay in these evacuation areas, they could be cut off. this is not a police state and people have to take a certain amount of responsibility and that's what we expect they'll do. >> as you

joining us by phone, delaware's governor jack markell. >> good morn. jon: you issued a statewide driving ban. that has been eased somewhat, correct? >> utilities are making progress in getting that down. we did have a pretty strict driving ban in place. that has been released some. people shouldn't be joy-riding but they can go to work and the like. i think when we look at it, you know, particularly compared to some other states we spared the worst of it. jon: you ordered about 50,000 people to evacuate the low-lying areas of our your state. did they comply? >> we're really grateful so many people complied both with the mandatory evacuations as well as driving restrictions. those two factors combined with the fact that we were spared the worst has led us to be in better shape than we had expected. better shape than some other states. jon: what is the biggest problem at this point? for instance, route 1, that is one of your major coastal highways. is that passable? >> it has been closed now for two days. i think biggest thing i'm concerned about is the

. >> jon, some folks did not evacuate last night like a governor, jack markel, order them to print theational guard along with the police department had to go rescue those people. that is a great example of it is going to show that if you do obey an order from the government, you put the lives of first responders in danger. take a look behind me. the waves are coming in really fast and furious. they are big and tall, and they are very loud. the ocean is basically a row did a ton of the beach. you can see there is a huge hole. this used to be a place where people could walk out to the beach. now, there is a huge hole. the beach is gone here. it is kind of slowing the ocean from going onto the boardwalk, but there are planks back there that are washing up, among other things. a lot of debris starting to come in. we don't know where it's coming from. but it is coming in. the wind has intensified a lot. it is very steady and the gusts really do take your breath away. the power is still on in our hotel, but we are told that the power company is calling people in from louisiana and alabama j
