jackie robinson is 30 years old. we want people to read your book, so i'm going to just pick out two sections. how had jackie robinson matured as a player and as a person? mr. kennedy: again, wonderful question. his first year with the dodgers was 1947 and again with the dodgers in 1940 eight, this was part of the story of jackie robinson. he had agreed he was going to sort of turn the other cheek, as it were. even though he faced a lot of racial taunting, even though pictures -- pitchers would intentionally hit him -- no player in 1948 would hit him -- no player in 1948 was hit with more pitches than jackie robinson. he believed that was a way to temper the action, to sort of not allow people to -- to make less room for criticism. he was successful his first year. 1949, before that season, he said he could not do it anymore. the gloves were off, so to speak, and he decided he was going to be an aggressive player, and he said as much in spring training. he came out and that year was an enormously more animated, aggre
