jackie benson is at d.c. police headquarters right now with more. >> reporter: doreen, his motive for firing on a d.c. police cruiser are unclear. but we now know this man is wanted for vicious crimes against women in prince georges county. 34-year-old richard butler iii is accused of brutally stabbing his girlfriend march 7th and trying to sexually assault a young girl whose home he later attempted to firebomb. hess weeks on the run came to an end yesterday evening aftn alarming incident on mellon street just off martin luther king jr. avenue in southeast d.c. a cruiser was on patrol, was fired on, in what officials say was an unprovoked attack. officers inside returned fire. people on the sidewalk dove for safety. a motorist frantically trying to avoid the gunfire threw her car into reverse and collided with the car behind her. amazingly, no one was injured. we're told that detectives investigating the crimes in prince georges county are aware that butler has been captured. at d.c. police headquarters, jack
