kpix 5 jackie ward is live near the bay bridge on the hurdles involved and why this won't be the end of the demolition work. jackie? >> reporter: yes, michelle, you're right. this is not the end of what needs to be done. but it is the end of an era. that truss you see behind me is the only piece that is left of the old bay bridge and it is coming down today. that truss is 1.7 million pounds and it is 288 feet long. and caltrans will be lowering it on to a waiting bridge where it will then be floated over to the port of oakland for disassembly. depending on the weather, we are expecting the process to get under way between 6:00 this morning at low tide and 12:30 this afternoon. it is the19th and final piece of the bridge that spanned the bay from 1936, until it was decommisioned in 2013. clearly, this bridge is iconic in the bay area. these photos are from caltrans. they give us some perspective and show us what this bridge used to look like, way back in the day. so although this bridge is finally coming to an end, and phase three, it will start soon and won't end until the end of 2018

kpix 5's jackie ward is live in concord, where a memorial service is under way now. ckie. >> reporter: ladies, this is the first line of duty death for the alameda county sheriff's office in 18 years. sergeant ray kelly says you never quite get over days like this. and today's services are still under way here. hundreds of officers from across the country are here to pay respects to deputy mike foley. the services started with a procession that began at the oakmont mortuary at lafayette and continued to the concord pavilion. he died from head injuries he got when he was hit by a bus at the santa rita jail in dublin last week. he had been a deputy for 10 years and prior to that, was with the concord police department for 29 years. he died last thursday at john muir medical center. >> anybody that can do 40 years in a job like this and still get up every morning and be motivated and energetic and the hardest working guy on your shift, pretty amazing character. it just goes to show, you know, the type of person he was. >> reporter: deputy foley actually grew up in concor
