kpix 5's jackie ward is live to tell us what's on the agenda. jackie. >> reporter: kenny, this is one of two projects that will be voted on today that will affect people's traveling from larkspur and sausalito back ard forth to san francisco. the city of sausalito has filed a lawsuit because the bridge district is trying to push through plans despite this lawsuit. let me explain here. the golden gate bridge highway and transportation district wants to revamp the ferry terminal in sausalito saying it has to in order to keep up with future federal rules. the see if of sausalito says the district needs city approval to do this. so last september, sausalito filed a lawsuit alleging the bridge district is violating a 1995 lease agreement that requires city approval before making, quote, major alterations to the ferry landing. lawyers for the bridge district are arguing parts of the lawsuit should be tossed out claiming the city is basing their suit on a letter the district sent to them in september. the district says it right to free speech is being v

kpix 5's jackie ward is live in the newsroom with the latest. jackie. >> reporter: this morning the top law enforcement official in contra costa county is admitting he broke the law. district attorney mark peterson secretly took more than $66,000 of his campaign money and spent it on himself over five years. he used it for travel, hotels, restaurants, movie tickets. on top of that, he failed to report the spending on campaign finance disclosure forms according to the grand jury. that is why it is calling for peterson's removal. in december, peterson issued this statement saying he regrets and acknowledges the mistakes he made regarding his campaign financing account. he also agreed to pay $45,000 in fines to the fair political practices commission. at that time, peterson also said he considered the money to be loans and that he was paying the campaign funds back. the district attorney's office says they have no comment at this time. in the newsroom, jackie ward, kpix 5. >>> president trump's attempt to set the record straight on why he fired jame

jackie ward, kpix 5. >>> tesla employees are revealing some troubling news. they say the company's growth is costing them their safety. kpix 5's anne makovec is live outside the factory with more on their claims. anne. >> reporter: yeah. publicly we see these shiny new state-of-the-art electric vehicles coming out of this factory here in fremont. but behind closed doors, some employees say that tesla is putting its products over its people and some new numbers by a workplace safety nonprofit appear to back that up. the nonprofit is called work safe. it says that injuries at the fremont factory was 31% higher than the industry average in 2015 and serious injuries double the industry rate. tesla employees say they were worked to exhaustion. >> literally like four of us doing a six man job burned-out everybody in our area burned- out. >> not really reflective of the environment that you see here. and that you'll hear from the rest of our employees. >> reporter: now, we did hear from a current tesla factory worker who wanted to remain anonymous. he says, do i see

kpix 5's jackie ward is live in san francisco with details. ie. >> reporter: michelle, for the caltrain electrification plan to work, a few critical things have to happen. step one the house and the senate have to approve the tentative budget then caltrain has to get $647 million from the federal government that they need in order for this $2 billion project to work. it's a project that caltrain said would create a lot of possibilities for commuters between san francisco and san jose. contractors are standing by and waiting until all money is approved before they begin converting diesel train cars into electric ones. and the sfmta supports caltrain as well because of the transbay transit center. it's being built right now in downtown san francisco. if this project falls through the sfmta would need plan be. >> it's a big blow because if it can't be electrified it's going to be a very expensive bus station. it's not totally dead yet because the president might put the money in for it -- maybe. i wouldn't bet on it. >> reporter: high-speed rail e

kpix 5's jackie ward is live in the neighborhood with a closer look at the changes. ckie. >> reporter: yeah, kenny. we're live in the outer sunset where the sfmta is proposing a lot of changes for this area that they say will make it safer and add parking for people. they will have a hearing this morning. let's show you the spots they are talking about. if approved, the stretch of the area between 39th and 40th would get striped bike lanes in both directions similar to what you see here on ortega street. the sfmta will give bicyclists a little more room to ride on. further down vicente between 44th and 46th, the city will change them from parallel to perpendicular to add more spaces. one resident says by making them perpendicular it will allow more cars to park here. but at a price. >> it goes further into the street plus the bike lanes, i think it's going to increase how fast cars drive and in my opinion i work in the tenderloin, more cars, more obstruction, more crime. >> those parking spots that we're adding in were at the request of community petition. people said

kpix 5's jackie ward shows us the new alameda apartment complex four years in the making. >> reporter: this 32-unit apartment complex will serve what the city of alameda calls very low-income families by limiting their rent to 30% of their income. it's the completion of a project that took four years to get done from planning to the end of construction. and judging by the number of families that wanted one of these apartments, that's new homes are sorely needed in alameda. resources for community development received more than 10,000 applications for the 32 units comprised of one or three bedrooms. >> this kind of housing allows families and individuals to stay in neighborhoods where they were raised and where they work because we have access to transit, services on site. >> reporter: the housing authority of the city of alameda is providing funding for 7 units that they say will serve very low income alameda families by limiting their rent to 30% of their income. the remaining 25 units are limited to households earning 30 to 60% of the area median income. >> so our partnership with t

kpix 5's jackie ward is live at the airport to tell us what happened. jackie. >> reporter: michelle, passengers on board that jetblue flight say that it was a scary moment when they were in the air last night and they are relieved to be back in san francisco this morning. the flight was leaving jfk from new york city on its way to sfo here where we are this morning and passengers say they were alarmed when they saw smoke coming from an overhead bin. it turns out a lithium battery caught fire. we talked to a passenger who was on the flight. >> i noticed that the stewardess was trying to, like, she had a maybe a storage bin and she was trying to, um, get the backpack and trying to basically put the fire out. you could see smoke and smell it. >> reporter: the fire caused the pilot to divert the plane and make an emergency landing at grand rapids, michigan. the delay was three hours and the jetblue flight landed around midnight. it didn't havefully other issues. >>> russian warships in the mediterranean have fired four cruise missiles at isis positions in sy

kpix 5's jackie ward is live in el sobrante where there is a "shelter in place."> reporter: michelle, the standoff that we have been monitoring for a few hours may be over here in el sobrante and this is the reason why. there is a man in that sheriff's patrol car right now where you see four officers standing around. he was placed into the back of the car with handcuffs. that may be the person who caused the standoff. we are unsure of that because it is unconfirmed. earlier this morning a man was inside a home with a gun according to the contra costa county sheriff's office and a "shelter in place" was put in place for this neighborhood. we are on robin hood road and this happened about a block away at robin hood and knotting ham. there's an elementary school nearby so hopefully it will clear up before school starts. we talk to a man who was out for a morning walk with his dog. he usually comes this way and was surprised to see everything. again, we believe this situation has ended. just about 10 minutes ago. and it is a safe situation here. in el sobrante, jackie

kpix 5's jackie ward joins us now with the very latest. >> reporter: good morning. cbs news has learned that president trump tried to pressure former fbi director james comey to drop his investigation into fired national security adviser michael flynn. the "new york times" first reported the story saying comey wrote a memo about his february meeting where the president asked him to, quote, let go of the flynn investigation because flynn was quote a good guy. the meeting came one day after mr. trump fired flynn for lying to the president about his vice president -- vice president, rather, about his contact with russian diplomats. president trump's administration denies the account. >> the larger concern is just what seems to be a lack of communication discipline coming out of the white house. >> he needs to come back before the congress and i think share with the public what conversations he had with the president that may bear on whether there was any effort to obstruct the investigation or impede it in any way. >> reporter: a possible impeachment would not be a qui

kpix 5's jackie ward joints us now to tell us more. >> reporter: this lawsuit has been going on for years. but now, california and new york attorneys general are being called the leaders in a 16-state charge that are trying to intervene in that federal lawsuit. the ags say they are trying to protect care for millions of americans. the issue stems from a lawsuit filed by house republicans in 2014 seeking to block billions of dollars in payments to insurance companies to subsidize lower income americans. the lawsuit is still ongoing and the trump administration seems unlikely to fight to preserve the funding. they are asking the federal court to allow the states to directly defend the law. in a tweet, becerra says, thanks to the aca, over 5 million people in california receive quality affordable healthcare many for the first time. protect our care. if payment to insurance companies ends, becerra says coverage would drastically change for millions of americans. he also added that there's no way to predict the direction of the trump white house. >> so what happens if congress passes the new h

kpix 5's jackie ward is live in san francisco with the latest. >> we don't have much information kneehat police say is a man in his -- we don't have much information right now but what police say is a man in his 20 is dead after being shot. it happened around 3 a.m. witnesses say his name was christian, a homeless man who lived in the area at the civic center plaza. the witness said he heard gunshots then saw the victim after he was shot. >> like, i seen him stumbling up ands get ah! i don't know bleeding or not. really sad, like, then everybody took off running and scattered. >> reporter: again, all we know now is that one man is dead after being shot just a couple of hours ago. there's still quite a few people here on scene apparently people who knew him. there's probably a group of about 10 or so people. right now, police aren't releasing any more information on the shooting. they say that they have a lot of good leads about the shooter himself or herself. so they want to just keep those details to themselves right now. in san francisco, jackie ward, kpix 5. >>> president trump pla

kpix 5 reporter jackie ward is at police headquarters where a press briefing wrapped up a short time ago. >> reporter: police tell us this shooting started as a 911 call for a family disturbance around 11:30 this morning. when police officers got to the home, that's when the situation quickly escalated. police say as three officers arrived at the scene, the garage door of the home began to open and standing inside was a man with a firearm who began walking toward the officers pointing the gun in their direction. we don't know if the man fired his weapon the police, but one officer fired his hitting the suspect. the man died from the injuries at the scene. >> it's very unusual for this neighborhood. it's an isolated incident. it's not involved in any other incidents that occurred on burgundy drive. >> reporter: we don't know if police had been to this residence before. right now, witnesses are still being interviewed and evidence is still being processed. no one inside the home was injured and none of the officers on scene were hurt either. right now, the alameda county district attor
