kpix 5's jackie ward is live at sfo to tell us how this will affect people hoping to come to the u.s.jackie. >> reporter: kenny, one thing that i really want to stress to people this morning is that some experts believe that this won't cause as much melee as the last time a travel ban was put in place. this revision will cause some confusion and that's why lawyers will be on hand at sfo at 7 a.m. so we have a map for you of the people who this will be affect. the latest ban applies to people from six mostly muslim countries. the supreme court ruled that the president can ban them from entering the united states if they don't have a close relationship with a family member, business or university here. so the new guidelines say that applicants and refugees from those six countries must prove a bona fide relationship with a family member to be exempt from the ban but that doesn't include people like grandparents, aunts, uncles, fiancees and other extended family to name a few. government lawyers must determine how to define such a bona fide relationship. >> some who have been coming back

kpix 5's jackie ward on the frightening moments on board and the emergency landing. >> reporter: it's probably the last thing you ever want to see on a flight, nevermind a cross- country flight, smoke from an overhead bin. we spoke to passengers who say it was kind of a scary moment when they saw smoke coming from row 25 of the jetblue flight that was in the air. the flight crew quickly identified the problem a lithium battery in a backpack and it had caught fire. they were able to successfully put it out. still, this fire forced the pilot to make an emergency landing in grand rapids, michigan. >> i was thinking they were just doing a safety check to make sure there was no more devices that could be flammable. and back of my mind thinking maybe there's something else or the item could explode again. >> reporter: the layover lasted about three hours and one passenger tells us a lot of people on board were frustrated and annoyed by this situation. but the flight did eventually end up landing safely without any further incident here at sfo. at sfo, jackie ward, kpix 5. >>> the burlingame
