kpix 5's jackie ward joins us with the story. i was so sad to hear this because i remember growing up following koko. >> reporter: she was very loved. this is sad news for the bay area and for everyone who knew about koko. >>> reporter: cocoa was born on the 4th of july, 1971, at the san francisco zoo. in 1974, she began working with dr. francine penny patterson at stanford. there, the gorilla project was founded and koko learned sign language. she became an icon for interspecies communication and empathy and even had her own pet kitten named all ball who was featured in national geographic alongside koko in 1985. the book koko's kitten was published shortly after that and is still used in schools all over the world. the gorilla foundation says koko was able to teach us the emotional capacity and cognitive ability of gorillas and they will continue to honor her legacy with ongoing project in africa, the great ape sanctuary on maui and even a sign language app that features koko. she was 46. >>> time now 5:10. the scooter problem
