kerry sanders joins us live from jacksonville. kerry, what happened in court today?ess devils are in details here. she did run those errands and, yes, the judge said it was a violation of the rule he established for her home detention. here's the details. she got permission from the sheriff's office civilian officer whose responsibility it is to oversee home detentions to run these errands and while the state attorney said errands were to the grocery store and to the bank and to other small errands that seem to violate the spirit of the judge's order, when they dug deeper, the reason she went to the grocery store was because it was less expensive for her to get a cashier's check or postal order, a money order, from the grocery store than say from the bank and she needed to get that money order to pay the costs of her home detention which is administered by the sheriff's office and the reason she went to the bank was to get the cash so she could go to the grocery store to get the money order. when the judge heard all of that, he said okay, mistakes were made here. the

nbc's cary sanders joins me live from jacksonville.plain what happened in court. >> the judge said what happened was, quote, a mistake and they happen, and this was not a willful violation. marissa alexander is on home detention while she's out on bond awaiting a new trial. she asked the sheriff's department whether she could do certain things while she was on home detention. she wanted to go to the grocery store, she was given permission. she wanted to go to the bank, she was given permission. she ran some other errands and the sheriff's department monitored her with the gps and was gone from home for no more than two minutes. according to the prosecution, the sheriff's department didn't have the authority to give her that permission to go run these errands and that the judge's order for home detention was specific, she should remain home. the prosecution asked in court, how do we know she didn't go get a gun, for instance? well, there's no evidence she went to get a gun, but the judge was clearly upset that the sheriff's department h

even inner-city urban poverty looks different in miami and jacksonville or tampa or other parts of the state. all these have to be dealt with in creative and innovative ways. the frustrations you often hear is we have no flexibility. we are forced to provide services within the constraints of government mandates and government requirements that you not allow us to tailor our programs to the individual, to the locality we are trying to serve. hence some of the problems. the other complaint you get is the extraordinary amount of paperwork involved every single year in accessing these funds in these programs. that is problematic as well. my biggest concern i have learned from is that we have antipoverty programs that help us to alleviate the pain of poverty, but they do not do nearly enough to help people overcome the causes of it, the things that are keeping them from getting ahead. unless we address the structural causes of poverty, we are never going to solve it and are never going to create the kind of upward mobility we want in our country which we expect from our nation. >> you were
