let's go back to jacky rowland, our correspondent. ckie, it looks as show we could be facing multiple acts of violence around paris tonight, a shooting in the tens, we're looking at explosions in the north of paris stadium. and also natasha telling us about a potential hostage situation although not confirmed in the 1 area. are we talking about a vicinity of all these axe of violence taking place in an area relatively close to each other? >> relatively close to each other. they have suggested that this is an area in the in the east of paris, it's near a canal that is very popular. there are lots of clubs, bars, restaurant along there. it is a very trendy, up and coming area. a lot of alternative clubs and very popular with young people. we're talking about a restaurant and nightclub not far from each other i've seen people with blood on their faces. we're hearing reports as many as 18 people dead now. and as well as of course those reports of two explosions near the. stadium where there is a football match between france and germany. i

let's join jacky rowland, who is live in paris, what is happening in the aftermath of that, jacky? >> as we heard, the operation is over, we had more details, a brief news conference by the french interior minister and the paris prosecutor. the proffer giving us more details of what happened. he said that they had received information that the main suspect was in the area. he cannot say or is not saying whether he was among the people in the apartment. according to the prosecutor, there were seven suspects in the apartment. more than the security forces expected. some were riding behind rubble. in terms of arrests and deaths, there was a young woman that blew herself up. security found a second dead body or suspect who they said was killed by projectiles and grenades. there were a further three arrests from the apartment. no identities were given of people in the apartment. they are in the process of trying to identify the body of the young woman. even after the operation was finished, there was more activity in the church behind me. security forces made a hole in the door of the c

jacky rowland in paris >>> more than 30 people have died in an explosion in nigeria. it happened in yolla in a busy market area, where traders closed up for the day. 80 others were injured. more from akmed who is in abuja now. tell us more about the attack. officially the number of deaths stands at 32, and 80 injured. this is what the officials are saying. some of the injured are critically affected by the blast yesterday. and according to eyewitnesss, they said the numbers could have been higher than the ones registering now. the suicide bomber can take as many lives as possible. they started sharing money or dishing out money to people, mostly women and children who are in that market area. when a huge crowd gathered they detonated the device, killing those people. a few kilometres from where the suicide bomber attacked a mosque. killing dozens of people in the state cap stam. tall -- capital. >> the battle, president harare is close to defeat. is that the case? >> well, the military has driven boko haram. they have claimed victory after victory on boko haram. what

jacky rowland, hi there jacky, a day of raids to speed up investigation. >> reporter: yes, indeed thereave been a number of more details about the investigation. overnight from sunday into monday police around the country carried out 168 searches in towns and cities all over the country, from liles in the north to mar sai in the south account strassbourg, arrested 23 people and found 31 weapons. so certainly the investigation has been proceeding. we've had more details about the identities of some of the attackers. and of course, later in the day, a speech from president francois hollande to both houses of parliament. in which he detailed new anti-terrorism measures which he hopes they will vote on later this week. >> and jacky also within a change to the constitution to prevent more attacks. what does it actually mean in practice? >> well, those are the measures i referred to. president francois hollande will be proposing these changes to the parliament. ultimately it will involve extending the current state of emergency for three months and then introducing into the constitution measu

we're in conversation with jacky rowland.'s not lost on anyone that this is highly unusual because that particular venue usually reserved for presidents, p.m.s and even the military. it's a measure of how desperately important it is to the people of france the events of two weeks ago today. >> reporter: yes. the square, which you p you can see behind me, was established in the 17th century. from its name you can tell that it was originally intended as hospital to treat the war wounded, soldiers wounded in france's wars over the centuries. over the time it has evolved in terms of its functions. it still serves today as a military hospital. at any time you might find up to a hundred war wounded being treated here, but as you said the building has taken on a greater significance. napoleon is buried here. other important military leaders are buried here as well. so the choice of this venue really does confer that long historical tradition and that huge national respect and importance to the people who are being remembered today >

jacky rowland is there. jacky, give us an idea of the number of police officers we're seeing, what kind of security officers we're seeing. the vehicles there, some are police vans and some are ambulances. >> reporter: hundreds of security forces quite simply. regular police are securing the outer cordon and then as you go further in, you get to the more hard-core police units, people like this swot teams which are known as the red here in france, also anti terror police and military as well. we've seen military troops here. in terms of the types of vehicles, it depends on the outer cores. as you go in, there are ambulances, fire engines of the literally hundreds of officers from different branches of the police and the military involved in this operation, and the cordon, the police cordon, is very wide and is being maintained with extreme vigilance which suggests that there is still something very active going on inside, but we're not getting a lot of information, if any, about what exactly that is >>> tell

jacky rowland has more from paris. >> reporter: it was an extremely solemn occasion, in which presidente very much assumed the mantel of national leader, statesman, and took on the responsibility for summing up and articulating the mourning and commemoration of the whole of france. he started very much by paying tribute to the 130 individuals who lost their lives and the hundreds of others who were wounded. he said these were people who loved life, whereas the attackers were those who followed a cult of death. the president also reaffirmed french values, in particular the value of freedom which was under attack on november 13th. and he said that french culture, the french lifestyle, french universal values would prevail. he also made a very firm undertaking to fight and ultimately defeat isil, the movement, which said that it was behind these attacks. just one footnote, there were at least two families who stayed away from the ceremony on friday. they said the authorities hadn't earned the lessons from the attacks earlier this year at the newspaper charlie hebdo, and the government hadn

to jacky rowland live from paris. you were on the scene very quickly after this raid started at around 060 hours gmt this morning. tell us what happened, what was happening then? >> reporter: yes. right now we understand that the main phase of the operation which targeted two buildings in st denis is over. as you mentioned, they killed three suspects during that operation. one of them was a woman. she was apparently wearing a vest packed with explosives. there are conflicting reports as to whether she detonated the vest or the police shot her. three suspects were injured and three police officers were injured in the operation. however, the indications are they're not seriously injured. so three suspects killed, three detained and three police officers injured. however, having said that that main phase of the operation appears to be over, there is still extremely heavy police presence in the city of st denise. they blocked off many roads. i am currently weaving my way through the center and i've come upon police blocks

. >> let's go live now to jacky rowland in paris. >> this underlies the international dimension of this investigation, the latest arrests coming from belgium. in fact, five people, in fact seven now, the latest report we've heard that just seven people have been arrested, most of them from the a poor district of brussels. what we're hearing from belgium, coming from the prosecutor's office is that two of the attackers, according to the belgian authorities, two of the attackers who died in the paris attacks on friday night were from brussels. it's been clear from quite an early stage that there was a belgian link or a belgian connection at the attacks, because one of the cars used by the attackers were traced to belgium, so this is really an example of how there is a lot of cross border cooperation in trying to get more confirmation on who was behind the attacks on friday night and also what kind of networks or accomplices could still be out there. >> there's a lot of excitement about passport which have been found. let's stick with the facts and ask what do we know about passports and w

let's go to jacky rowland who is live on the scene for us. jacky, just give us an idea of your vantage point and what you can see happening. >> reporter: well, in fact, it's a rather confused situation here at the moment. although there was an understanding that the main raids, the operation against two locations, two builds in st denis were over. just in the last five minutes we saw police again with guns drawn and pursuing someone who appeared to be running away. that was about five minutes ago. no gun fire or anything, but certainly although we know that there were two main suspects that were being searched, you mentioned their names but, salah abdeslam and abdel hamid abaaoud, what has become clear in the course of this investigation is that there are various different - there were three separate cells that carried out the attack. there have been various leads in belgium, there have been reports of arrests in germany. this is clearly, although this particular operation against the two buildings may be over, it's clear that there are a numb

. >> jacky rowland is outside one of the bistros in paris, but first of all the investigation, what can tell us that is new? >> reporter: well, a lot of the narrative that we have been hearing about the investigation has focused on three brothers, three french brothers with strong connections to brussels, and they were involved in hiring the cars that were used in the attacks, or at least two of them potentially were, the third brother was questioned by police and released. they said he was not in any way implicated. but one of the three brothers is currently searched by the police. he third brother at the moment it's not sure what became of him, there has been some unconfirmed reports that he may have been among the bombers. but at the moment police are looking for this brother, and his other brother appeared on television urging him to give himself up to police. now police are seeking a second fugitive in connection with the attack. so the investigation continuing, and the emphasis being on trying to find people directly connected with the attacks and also those who may have been invo

jacky rowland live in paris. the city is terrified. that's the sense that you get looking at the pictures. tell us what happened. >> reporter: it was a couple of hours ago now and i was just standing next to our satellite truck with my back to the square talking to a colleague who could see the square, and an a certain moment she says, something is happening run. we were september along. there were hundreds of people running in all directions. she fell over and people were just stampeding on top of her, some people running to the metro. we ran into - we followed a group of young people. we went into a shop. people were really, really terrified. i think it's indicative that the level of fear can be triggered by anything. we're not sure whether they were fire crackers. some people said it was the police who were telling people to run. total confusion, but it really is indicative that terror now resides just under the surface in paris and it takes very little to bring that panic out into the open and to provoke those chaotic scenes whose

thank you so much, jacky rowland. >> paul brennan has the latest on the raised carried out in the belgian capital. >> the authorities had the opportunity to arrest a man saturday when he was stopped by police at the belgian border. police did not have his name and he was not on any watch lists or arrest lists and only subsequently the police realized the importance of him in the overall scheme of things in relation to the paris attacks. they missed one opportunity and that put huge pressure on the authorities to detain him as quickly as possible. we've seen various police units, plain clothes units, khaki clad paramilitary type units. although they may, it seems that early indications now are that they may not have been able to arrest him here, they will be searching the addresses here, because the reason they came here is undoubtedly because the addresses have some kind of cushion s. significance or connection with the suspect that is they're hunting for. >> the french military launched a series of airstrikes against isil positions in syria. the sortes were flown sunday from air bases in

more now from jacky rowland joining us live from paris. what can we expect during the ceremony? >> reporter: in the next half hour the french president francois hollande will be making a solemn eulogy. he is expected to speak for about 20 minutes, paying tribute to the people who were killed and injured in these attacks, paying tribute, to what it has been the bataclan generation. the youngest person to be killed was 17 years old, the oldest was 68. the average age 35. a list of the 130 people who were killed in the attacks will be read out in the court yard of the building behind me. also people all over france have been asked to join in the solemn mood of hoppleage by flying the french flag from their windows >>> will all of the victims' families be represented today? >> reporter: at least two families have said that they won't be coming to the ceremony. also one survivor from the attack, a man who was able to escape from the bataclan, said he won't be coming either. in all three cases they said that the authorities have not learned the security lesson from after the charlie h

jacky rowland >>> returning to the breaking news that is happening in the u.s. in colorado springs where there was a shooting at the family planning clinic, the planned parenthood clinic. we're getting updates on how many people were killed there including a police officer. what's the latest you can tell us? >> reporter: we just spoke to some officials. they had a press conference updating the situation. three people killed here altogether, one police officer and two civilians. all of this started at around noon time today when the gunman entered the clinic you see he entered and began shooting and that is when the police officer arrived and going through the room trying to evacuate people. they were able to get a lot out of the building, but the shooter stayed inside that building for some five hours. it wasn't until 4.52 colorado time, five hours later, that they were able to mac contact with him. he finally surrendered. he was transported into a police car and taken away. nine other victims injured, shot and injured here. the mayor john suthers said he is now

let's speak to jacky rowland live. what is the latest situation as you are hearing it? >> reporter: the latest that we're hearing is that potentially one, maybe two suspect are still holed up in a building in the center of st denis which will explain why there is still a very diligently monitored large police cordon around the center of town. we thought that the main operation had pretty much come to an end shortly after dawn when there were a series of debt nations and-- detonatations and we heard two, possibly three suspects have been killed, five people detained and three police officers wounded in the raid. it became clear, however, that the situation was far from under control. shortly after those debt nations, about half an hour-- detonates about 455 minutes, 30 minutes, we saw police running through the streets chasing someone. we don't know who. then it became clear by the way the police were behaving, very alert, very aggressive, on a number of times reaching this camera we walked down streets, ran into police cordons and actually had guns pointed at us. we had

. >> let's across over to saint denis where that raid took place and speak to jacky rowland to hear about the suspect that had been taken in, particularly about the fate of abdelhamid abaaoud. >> the big question is where is abdelhamid abaaoud. certainly the police, one would think if he had in fact either been arrested or killed in that operation, then the authorities would be broadcasting that fact. they've been very quiet and so the big question now is whether this raid, which we're told was initiated after intelligence reports were gleaned suggesting that abdelhamid abaaoud was in the apartment in saint denis, whether in fact he was neutralized during that operation. so far, of those who died and were arrested, only one name has been released. french media are reporting that the young woman who blew herself up with an explosive vest was a cousin of abdelhamid abaaoud, which does suggest obviously that we're getting pretty close now and that the police are closing the net. if she was in the apartment, the cousin of this wanted man, however, we don't know whether he was found, obviously

jacky rowland has more from paris. >> reporter: the french foreign minister has made it clear that successis summit is absolutely essential, failure to reach an agreement on controlling climate change is, in his view, not an option. and he gave just one worrying prediction for the future if in fact greenhouse gas emissions continue and temperatures continue to rise. he said by 2030, the effects on the environment, particularly in some of the developing countries would be so severe that 100 million additional people would be facing extreme poverty. so just one indication there of what is at steak in very real terms for those leaders who will be meeting at the beginning of december in france, trying to reach a consensus on how to hit that target of 2 degrees above the temperatures on the planet before the industrial age, and a target to reduce that global warming down to 1.5 degrees. >>> china's immrut be key at the talks in paris. the country is the world's biggest polluter. >> reporter: on a day like this, you need no reminder that china is the biggest emitter of greenhouse gases from coal

jacky rowland, al jazeera, paris. >> we have more now on the state's position on climate change. >> the way that john kerry is making this argument is a bit subtle, but you can see the logic. if there is instability because there is drought, because there are food shortages, because militaries have to spend much more money in order to retrofit their military bases and their port, then that's a lot of money that could go towards relieving the suffering of other people, and then you have the resultant anxieties that result from that, and what the secretary of state is arguing is that thosing a sites could lead to a political instability or make it possible for extra state actors, such as isil or al-qaeda to try to take advantage of the situation, and that is how he's arguing this is as much a matter of national security as it is about simple survival for the word. it's a way of sending a signal to the u.s. congress that the president is serious about trying to do something about global warming and that it would be much better if members of the u.s. congress supported the administration as

. >> jacky rowland live now in paris.ive us a sense in terms of the detail and tone of the speeches, thes. >> well, ye yes, franÇois hollande began by saying that the attackers targeted france because it's the country of liberty and human rights. but then he went on to describe the ways in which he's going to ask the parliament to vote on new security measures and anti-terror measures that would impact curb considerably in france. he wants them to extend the state of emergency for three months. he wants new measures put into place whereby under the state of emergency certain powers may be in certain circumstances transferred from civilian authorities to military authorities. he also went up to list various other powers he wants given to police, at the detentions, house arrests, obviously a lot more of power being given to the security forces and the intelligence services. as well as he's looking to increase the size of the police force and to have the power to strip people of their french citizenship even if they were bor

. >> jacky rowland live for us now in paris. run us through, if you would, the extent of the anti-terror measures that president hollande would like to bring in, including this state of emergency. >> well, yes, certainly acting swiftly. he told parliament that he would be tabling those measures for them to vote on before the end of the week. as you mentioned an extension of the state of emergency and also he would ask them to vote on a proposal that certain powers during what he has described as a state of siege could be transferred from the civilian authorities to the military authorities. he also detailed it as a new power surveillance suspects, the ability to strip french citizens of their nationality if they were found to have participated in acts of terror, and he also spoke about actions against organization for these people who were promoting hatred. so essentially we're looking at a whole new package of measures, which would impose new constraints and new limits on civil liberties in france, which the president is trying

. >> let's cross over to jacky rowland from paris to tell us about the calls made by the french on more international cooperation. >> yes, the french feel that the attacks have really thrown open the lack of a coordinated response to the threat from isil, and also to the violence in syria. at the moment, this response really is quite fragmented with the russians on one side doing their things in alliance with the iranians and on the other side, the americans and french and other western powers. france says now that there really is a much greater need for international coordination and to be working in a coordinated way, rather than a fragment way. there are suggestions the elements may be coming into place, for example, president francois hollande and his iranian counter part spoke on the phone. they said they need to fight with all their might against isil and those remarks by john kerry and he also invoked the possibility of russia and iran joining into talks on the future of syria, now which should make a major development, bearing in mind for the last four or so years, they haven't

jacky rowland joining us as well from paris, listening in to what francois hollande has been saying, ckie, what is the take-away message from this closing speech? >> reporter: well this is a speech that was scheduled anyway, because it is the unesco event. but a speak that has been somewhat reworked because it would have been rewritten before the events of friday night. so really francois hollande celebrating and defending the french way of life, saying it was specifically these things that were being attacked on friday, and saying the french won't be changing their way of life, and they are very proud of their culture. but in terms of advancing the investigation and advancing the efforts for international cooperation and the fight against isil, the more significant announcement of the last half hour has been that francois hollande has mentioned he was going to talk to president putin and obama, he will be going to washington on tuesday, and moscow on thursday. so following through on his intention on trying to join together the dots on the response to the situation in syria. >> jacki

let's get more from jacky rowland who is joining us from paris. give us a little bit more of what hollande had to say, what his message was to the people, and what the mood was like there, jacky. >> reporter: well, as you can imagine, it was an extremely solemn occasion, france chose to hold this ceremony two weeks after the attacks. that's for various practical reasons. it took many days in some cases to identify all of the victims of the attacks. and also the individual familied needed time to hold their own funerals. president hollande was the only person to speak at this event. he paid his respects to the dead, and reaffirmed french values and flee.com, and expressed france's determination to defeat those who were behind the attacks. it was a moment for national mourning and personal grieving. in this solemn setting, bah reeved families and survivors of the attacks came together to remember the 130 people who were killed, their names were read out one by one. standing alone, president francois hollande? the two weeks since the attacks he has s
