i want to go back to jacob rascon. he's around the corner from that garage. have you seen any sign that there's a relaxing of what's happening there? what can you tell us there, jacob? >> so when we arrived, chris, we're not pointing our camera down there, again, just in case, because initially they said that they didn't want any of their activities near the garage shown. but when we arrived, you had officers with their guns drawn. it relaxed a little bit minutes later. as we walked to the garage, we were able to see the six or seven officers in tactical gear. now we have units coming our way. we'll show that. we'll step out of the way as they do this. they told us to make sure and be out of the street in case they had any of their vehicles that were needing to come by. but as you heard the news inside the officers in tactical gear that we saw, have completed their manual search. they're now bringing canine units inside so that they can do a kcanine -- they can do a secondary search. this is, as you can tell, a canine vehicle. you can see the canine there on t

we're joined by nbc's jacob rascon, who joins us once again live in dallas this morning. , i know you have covered many of these protests around the country. earlier i heard you describing this one as being somewhat different in that it was very peaceful, and that the police officers were not necessarily lining the route, they weren't cloaked in their protective gear. they were walking among the protesters. >> and we've seen that, in fact, around the country, alex, at a lot of police departments have chosen to, instead of showing up in their riot gear with their shields and helmets, they instead show up just in their regular uniforms. often there are other officers in riot gear not visible, ready in case anything happens. but we are in the heart of downtown dallas. behind me the streets where the protests began, and then ended. it started at 7:00 and went until 9:00. you had about 800 people or so and right after the organizers of the protests told everyone to disperse that it was over, time to go, after a peaceful protest suddenly, of course, we heard the shots ring out.

>> all right, jacob rascon, thank you. >>> with the country on edge over the dallas killings, police departments in several cities are taking extra precautions for the safety of their officers tonight. there have been at least three other incidents in which police officers were shot. we get more tonight from cynthia mcfadden. >> reporter: tonight, a nation united in pain but divided, too, as people gather around the country rallying against continues. this morning in georgia, a police officer ambushed and shot responding to a 9/11 call. in ballwin, missouri, an officer shot during a traffic stop. yesterday afternoon in tennessee, authorities say a gunman upset about police violence against african-americans killed one woman and shot three others including a police officer. the new york tabloids highlights the country's division. we're joined now by nbc's jacob rascon. he is live, again, in dallas this morning. jacob, you've been outside that iconic bank of america plaza building there with the green lights. talk about what you're seeing now. >> it is incredible, alex. just now at this hour what we're seeing are people who still, and if we zoom in behind you're going to see a few people there gathered in front of the bus station, and they're waiting for their cars. they say they're determined to wait until the bomb sniffing is over with, but that we're told is going to take awhile. if we pan over to the right you're going to see the officers here that have been -- have been doing that, of course, all night. in fact when we arrived and drove in from houston, we got within a half mile and it took us 30 minutes to go that half mile because it was so difficult to get around. and it's going to be this way for the foreseeable future. they have not given a time line for when they're going to be finished. this is a massive investigation, of course. you're going to see they've reached out to atf, to t

nbc is in cleveland with a look at the last-minute preparations going here's jacob rascone. >> reporteraste of what's to come. >> where are you at, republican party? >> reporter: the first of many expected protests, this one the black panther party. downtown cleveland is all but lock down. inside what's called the secure zone, the final layers of fencing are going up. to get past this point during the convention, you'll need a credential from the secret service and to pass through a medical detecter. the deputy chief says major attacks like those in france and dallas prompt last-minute enhancements to the security plan. >> it is quite a challenge. what's been happening across the country in the last 12 months has been all during this planning process. we just keep changing our plan, enhancing our plan. >> 123 permits have been granted to demonstrate inside the event during the convention at four locations and along one route. this city is preparing for the worst. 73 law enforcement agencies. 5,000 officers from around the country. includes hundreds from california and pennsylvania sworn

let's go back on the ground to dallas where jacob rascon is standing by. jacob, what can you tell us? and how has the scene changed over the course of the time that you've been there? >> reporter: what we're seeing now, chris, are the greyhound station behind me, you'll see the blue neon sign. people have been in there for six hours, since the shots rang out, who have been sheltered inside. a lot of them now just coming out. we've been interviewing them as they come out and talk about how frightening it was to be inside, not knowing if there was any gunman, more than one that might have been on the loose and wanted to come into the greyhound station. and at the time when the shooting was going on, when they were sheltered inside, when they locked themselves inside, they say greyhound buses were still arriving and people would show up coming from houston or elsewhere and not knowing what was going on. there were as many as a hundred people sheltered inside this bus station. after the live shot, we'll see if we can't get any closer. but the night just ending

jacob rascon is in cleveland for us covering this angle.rotests already taking place there where you are. >> reporter: a taste of what's to come, alex. you have a small group of protesters, you have a big police presence. you have officers on bike-riding paths, officers on foot. a police chopper overhead. behind me, among the group sponsoring this march and protest is the new black panther party. they call themselves at times freedom fighters. among other things, they say they're protesting police brutality, and donald trump. but they say among other things that they're sending a warning across america, one speaker said our blood gets spilled, your blood gets spilled. the police are well aware of protesters like this. there are 122 permits that have been granted to groups to protest during the four days of the convention next week. and then, of course, around the city, it's all but locked down downtown. 8-feet-tall fences, barriers and such, all in preparation for monday. i spoke with a deputy police of chief about how recent attacks abroad

jacob rascon has been following it and joining me live. what do you got for us?porter: behind me what is going on is the first protest we've seen since this weekend and since the cleveland police department went live or operational with the final phase of their security plan. it's a small protest. this one lead and cosponsored by the new black panther party. their favorite chant is "black power." we've seen officers ride by on bikes and other vehicles. we've seen them standing by. we've seen a chopper overhead. a big police presence. we've seen undercover officers. so we know they're aware. this is just a taste of what is to come. we know there are 123 different groups that have received a permit to protest during the convention next week in four different locations. and one parade route. there's an event zone, there's a secure zone. this is a plan that has been in the works for nearly two years now, and the deputy police chief shared with me after every major attack like one in dallas, orlando, or france they review their plan and make adjustments. here is some

jacob rascon is there as well. jacob, what's going on there right now? >> reporter: lester, good evening. we've learned that the gunman grew up here in mesquite, texas, just 20 minutes away from the rampage. and this is the home where neighbors say he lived with his mother for many years. and this is the backyard where at least one neighbor says that the gunman would practice obstacle courses with his army uniform on and carrying his rifles. as you mentioned, we had detectives and atf agents in and ute of this house for several hours. we now know that the large bags of evidence that they were carrying had ballistic vests in them. they had rifles, bombmaking materials, they had ammunition, they had a journal as well of tactical training that he had written down clearly preparing for exactly this. we've also learned his military records show that he was an army reservist for six years. he did two hours in afghanistan. and after he left last year, he became an aide for underprivileged children and adults right here. then suddenly something snapped. his mom

now let me bring in nbc's jacob rascone outside of the convention center. what's the latest on security preps. we're hearing a lot about the expected protest. what's the latest? >> the final security preps are complete after more than two years of planning you now. what you're seeing outside of the arena is 3.7 miles of steel fences in the wake of different attacks like in dallas, san bernardino and orlando that the entire security team reviews the plan and makes enhancements and adjustments to that plan to make sure that there's no vulnerability. what you're looking at here is one of three checkpoints to get into the queue, what they call it. this is a secret service credential checkpoint and you're going to be wanted and go through a medal detector and such and there's some 5500 officers including local officers from the cleveland police department including some 2,000 from outside agencies and local agencies around the country and 3,000 federal officers. 73 different agencies. we're talking about cameras all around the city and an operation center where

jacob rascon has the latest on all the preparations. what are you city?: philadelphia has already had a national special security event in the last year, the pope coming last fall. so they're well prepared to this kind of thing. so part of the big part of the 3,000 federal officers and the agents that team in cleveland has now come here to do about the same thing. of course you have the secret service inside and homeland security and then you have the philadelphia police department, that will be a bit different than cleveland. because this department is so much bigger, so they won't bring in thousands of officers from outside, they will handle it themselves with a little bit of assistance from the about pennsylvania state troopers. they also here this philadelphia got a big federal security gran pennsylvania state troopers. they also here this philadelphia got a big federal security gr t grant, about $43 million. you will see some of the steel fences, as well. and as far as protesters go, we expect a lot of protesters. in cleveland, we had organizer of th

nbc's jacob rascone in ohio.t these enhancements, the fence going up, and some of the challenges facing them. >> reporter: some of the challenges come because there are tens of thousands of people expected here. we're right outside quicken loans. you can tell they are putting up the last layer of fencing around. this is inside the secret service secure zone and event zone outside of that where the protesters will be. every time there's been a major attack like in france, like in dallas, like orlando or san bernardino, they make enhancement to the plan, review the entire plan, see where they might be vulnerable. different changes they don't usually share. yesterday i was talking to deputy chief ed tomba, here is what he said. >> we have extra measures in place to keep everybody safe because that's a concern. we have visitors from all over the world. we want them to know they are safe. to see something like that happen is quite a challenge for us. >> reporter: back here live, you can tell, look at all of this fenci

i want to bring in jacob rascon who has been following security here. what you are sighieeing the ground, and second, if you have anything regarding today's events and reaction from authorities here. >> reporter: i can answer the second question best. the chief has told me this. any time an attack happens domestic or abroad, they look at their plan and look if there are vulnerabilities whether it's in france or dallas or orlando. they make enhancements they call them to the plan. they did that to the attack in france and they looked at their plan and made some changes to areas that were public that they were deciding that they weren't going to make public. it's too soon to do that now. we don't know a lot of the details of what's happening in louisiana, but we know they will look at it. they always look at it. the plan is constantly evolving and a lot of things they change, the enhancements and adjustments are things we don't see. we can talk to you about what we see out here. that's dozens of officers on bike. there are a total of 5,500 officer assigne

jacob rascon joins us now in cleveland.they have been planning this for some time and are working in coordination with 70 other law enforcement agencies to make sure everybody is safe. >> we have talked to many of those agencies and officers. today they did sort of a show and tell of all the different things they are going to have including officers on bike, officers on horseback. then they have their bomb squad with the new tools and a lot of toys that they are prepared for. the hope is that it's all peaceful, but they have to prepare for the worst case scenario. part of that is where we are. this is in case there are mass arrests. this is one of the overflow areas where people are able to rest and only kept for a number of hours but will be processed here. the courts will be open for extra time. you have judges on overtime. you have the hospital as well that will be open and ready for the worst case scenario. but everybody hoping that doesn't happen. >> jacob rascon, thank you, appreciate it. that's going to wrap up this

nbc's jacob rascon outside of philadelphia city hall.ficials been doing to prepare for all of this ? >> reporter: they hope officer rain shows up. they're doing a lot of the same they did in cleveland. we know the force of 3,000 federal agents and officers that were in cleveland is here now to prepare for this convention and, of course, the philadelphia police department has been preparing for this for more than a year. the difference between here in cleveland is that the philadelphia police department is so big, they're not getting outside officers to come in and swear in as temporary officers. they're using their own department only with some assistance from the pennsylvania state troopers. now, remember, they had a convention here in the year 2000 and that was rowdy. they had people arrested. some who sued the city. this time around, they changed the way they approach the protest. law enforcement reacted, especially those at political events, developed even over the last year at these trump rallies. you saw in cleveland how they gave

jacob rascon is in the middle of it. jacob, what's going on right now?what we're seeing, and we'll put the camera up so we can show you these officers going towards the center. this is right outside the quicken loans arena, the perimeter right around it. and what we had earlier was, according to scanner traffic, some sort of fight that broke out. what we saw, a couple of blocks away were officers running towards this area. so we followed them, when we got here, we saw the officers that you're seeing on horseback and others, we probably have, at this point, hundreds of people packing this intersection. and in the middle, it looks like there is at least one, maybe two people that have been detained, that are in handcuffs. it's not clear if they're part of the fight that we heard about earlier or what happened. one of them kind of has his shirt, looks like it's either torn or half-off. notable at least one of these people is wearing a revolutionary communist party t-shirt. some of the protesters we've seen on and off throughout the week. and there are some

>> jacob rascon, very somber, indeed. thank you for that. the body of one of five officers killed in app the ambush thursday has been escorted to a funeral home. 43-year-old brent thompson was the first officer in the 27-year history of that department to be killed in the line of duty. nbc's tammy litener is joining me now from dallas. tammy, we have these seven officers also wounded and hospitalized. just getting that good news about the one, ms. mcbride from d.a.r.t. she has just been released. can you confirm that? >> reporter: alex, that's right. we do have good news today, misty mcbride has been released from the hospital. she's a d.a.r.t. officer, which stands for dallas area rapid transit. she was released last night. she's a veteran officer, been with the department about five years. the other two d.a.r.t. officers that were released are omar cannon and jesus retana. but there are still some dallas police officers there and being treated. now, we had the chance yesterday to speak with jaime castro, a dallas police officer, a veteran

jacob rascon is part of our team in cleveland. outside the convention center. l, look at what we have here already. we're a day away from the start of the convention, but, jacob, this puts you squarely at the center of the conversation. we're talking about the right of the people to peacefully protest in a democracy against the president's plea that everybody keep the temperature down on this kind of thing. >> brian, what we're seeing here is a few hundred protesters who say they want to shut down the rnc convention. but what it's turned into is an anti-trump and a black lives matter protest. they've been marching now for almost an hour. they've been going toward the convention center. in fact, now we're in downtown. you can tell we're probably less than ten blocks away from the actual convention center. and i want to show you who just showed up here, this is the first time we've seen this ch, s which is not only officers on bike, which have been here the whole time, but now we have officers on bike and some of their brand new protective equipment, they call per

nbc's jacob rascon is in cleveland with more for us on the safety plan there. b, we remind everybody, the secret service is directly in charge of this, because this is a national special security event. >> reporter: right. and in any large-scale event like this, they are always worried about the lone wolf style attacks, the violent extremists that attack with little or no notice. that notice has been on the department of homeland security's sight for a long time now. in the wake of these attacks, of course, fresh in mind, they're going to have to relook at some things. we know that after dallas, they relook at some of their security measures and made some changes that they didn't want to share, i think for obvious reasons. now we have the secretary of homela homela homeland security here. he's going to tour the operations center, where they have all of their screens, video cameras where they monitor different things during the convention. that was already in the works. that was already planned before the attack in france. but, of course, now with that in mind, h

jacob rascon also here.ht of the attack overseas, have you found that properly securing this event has taken on even more urgency? >> they have been preparing for some time, as we know, for this event. they are blocking off different buildings or different streets. it comes in layers. overnight they put new concrete barriers and tonight they will put even more. they are going to block off a lot of the downtown area. some of what i'm hearing from police and from different hospitals, we're visiting all these locations to talk about how they have been preparing for some time for everything from a mass casualty event because of a lone wolf gunman to some sort of massive blast. they have had these things in mind preparing for a worst case scenario for some time, but to have these incidents so close to the convention makes it more real. and you have today in town the secretary of homeland secretary that was preplanned, but that's top of mind for everybody here. >> jacob rascon, thank you. >> brian, i can tell you
